At least four producers have left within the past month. One, a respected evening worker, is among the departing or departed.
The reason? A newsroom staffer tells me that, (and you've heard this before), they don't like the direction of the news operation."They're tired of management and frustrated. They just want out of here."

What direction do they want? The KRON4 action news team is now a bunch of on camera 60 year old's,with 22 years old's out on the street chasing ambulances..is that what bothers them?
ReplyDeleteWith so much media to have(internet etc,)..It doesn't take a large well paid news team to broadcast-especially for KRON as it operates on Moneyball principles..just be good enough to make a profit,no goals of being a leader.
And it shows.
If they replace those 60 year old grandmothers on the air with more Jackies, more people will tune in.

Kron is a sad shadow of what it used to be. Gary Radnich is barely hanging on there and at KNBR. If he can squeeze another year out of KNBR and perhaps two more at KRON, he'll be fortunate.
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad to watch the deterioration of the electronic media but too much media consolidation (which the government allowed), too much diversity in the media (the social media especially!) and advertising dollars that are shrinking because of the economy are all contributing factors.
But young people today (those under 35) don't watch news on TV, don't listen that much to the radio anymore, and are not interested in reading newspapers or magazines.
They're too busy tweeting, texting, facebooking, and tuning out the world by listening to their i-pods or burying their noses in their i-pads. All the while they're doing this, they're subsidizing selfish companies that don't give a whit about them or America. All they care about is the all mighty dollar.
Even worse, many are sitting in front of 2 thousand dollar HD screens that fill up the room, frantically working the joy sticks as they waste countless hours playing the latest video games while shutting down their minds.
They are lacking in social skills, because they spend so much time 'zoned out,' of social interaction, and they are eating poorly and exercising much less than they should. Many are fat, lazy, and underachieving. And they have entitlement issues, thinking the world owes them a living. Plus they're angry and cynical about things, because many of them come from broken homes. It's really not all their fault, as we (those of us over 35) have helped to create this toxic mix that has poisoned them.
This country is going to the dogs, and we have only our own selves to blame for this mental and physical slothfulness we have created. It is slowly sucking the life out of our media, and our country. SAD!
Don't be so pessmistic. We still have Jacqueline Bennett's chest 5 days a week to sooth our sadness about the imminent collapse of media as we know it.
DeleteThis is so true. I'm actually GLAD to be 50. Glad that I was born in the last generation to not be dominated by digitization of all things. I love the OPTIONS of having the computer, iPad, iPhone etc etc but I refuse to be suckered into being a slave to every text and tweet that comes my way. I spend most of my day with the cell phone off and check it in the morning and in the evening. Who the hell wants to be available 24-7 unless you're a doctor? I guess the younger generation sees no value in privacy? That's a sea change that I just don't understand.
DeletePeople are leaving because it's a horrible place to work. It's so unprofessional and unethical! People should get out while they can. The crazy mindset of the news director is trickling into the other departments and people are jumping ship in all departments. Good for them!

ReplyDeleteThe old timers on-air can afford to "tough it out." They're getting paid a lot more than the producers who are jumping ship. Producers are always in demand because most people want to be on-air, even in this economy.
Delete@6:56. You don't know what your taking about many who have left have already found other jobs or had them. Just cause its a bad economy doesn't mean your allowed to work in a hostile work environments and be jerked around.

The KRON OLD timers either have to hang on or retire as where else would want them? All young people should get out of there now so they don't become one of those pathetic OLD timers someday.

By then, your brains will be oozing out of your ears, like festering snot, from years of cooking your brain with the microwaves from your cell phone and your other gotta-have wireless devices (Hint: The wireless companies are lieing to you about the safety of their devices, while reaming your wallet every month. But you'll learn that reality soon enough, when the headaches and seizures come along. And when the neurologist tells you how sorry he is to have to tell you that your brain tumor is inoperable.)
Your hands will eventually become crippled from years of texting, when a few simple spoken phone conversations could have entirely prevented the damage to your thumbs. And conversing like a normal human being could have also saved you countless hours of time wasted on typing out your thoughts in silly acronyms and misspellings, all the while thinking about how GD clever you and your non-achieving generation are.
We "old timers" are the ones who laid the groundwork so that twits like you could sit on your ass for hours, playing video games and playing pocket pool while sending your moronic tweets and texts. (We had far loftier goals in mind for computerized communications technology, but we never counted on a generation of lazy unmotivated poorly-educated twits like you coming along and thinking that sending inane hunt-and-peck low-IQ messages was a desirable application for a high speed communications device.)

ReplyDeleteWhat's to "produce" at KRON? Every time I tune-in (as a former employee who exited in 1985) all I see are paid segments designed to look like news reports. On another subject, some time back you had a few responses about KRON in HD. I don't see them doing HD except for pass thru signal from network. The studio cameras are adjusted to the wide-screen format but are NOT HD. Even cheap home HD cameras would provide a better picture.
