Let's clear a few things up, shall we?
I don't have a dog in the Barbieri/Cumulus legal battle if it gets to court. Those of you who read me know my feelings about Cumulus-- its abhorrent corporate bulliness and its wanton disregard for broadcast ethics, particularly here in the Bay Area where it has hijacked radio and killed off the once-great call letters of KGO, KNBR, and KFOG.
The Ralph Barbieri situation is quite known now. I wrote about his relationship with the Giants, to which some of you took as "ripping" Ralph. Yes, I've been critical of Ralph, but at least The Razor has stood up for what he believes is right. Has he had road bumps? Sure, we all do; that's called life.
This is an important issue. Some of you have e-mailed to say, "move on" and enough about Barbieri. Many others of you like the subject matter. There's a lot of passion out there involving Ralph's situation, the impending legal battle with his ex-employer, and that's why I continue to write about this issue.
Even at his worst, Ralph Barbieri was willing to challenge the old guard here and that's why I liked him, for the most part. He had some personal baggage like most of us, but his on-air work was alright for me.
I don't want to get in the thorny legal issues. That's lawyer stuff and not particularly interesting. I know he was late a lot, I've heard he'd begun to lag and that his interest in sports seemed to wane. And I called him out on that. I also was the only guy who stated openly that although I was sympathetic over his disclosure of early-stages Parkinson's disease, that he had used that ailment as a negotiating tactic over his impending, (at the time), contract renewal.
After that posting, Ralph called me and wanted to go on the record. He said his health status was not used as a bargaining chip. I politely disagreed but told him if he wanted to issue a statement, I'd be happy to oblige. At the time, he informed me that he had re-upped his deal, (for a year) and that was that. We all know what has happened since.
For all his shortcomings, personally and professionally, Barbieri made me listen. I wasn't thrilled he was late and appeared sometimes ten minutes into the program out of nowhere. But when it counted I liked his style and he was usually an entertaining fixture on Bay Area radio.
Mostly, I liked Ralph for his refusal to back down on conventional wisdom and the norm. Not just on sports issues, but peripheral news and political issues as well. Were there times he was boorish and narcissistic? Yes, but even the bad Ralph was better than most of his own KNBR minions.
His audio retorts with Giant's GM, Brian Sabean were occasionally off the chart, but entertaining as hell. Likewise his obsession with the OJ Simpson trial and his incessant spiel that Simpson was guilty and frequent "this guy chopped the head off 2 people"-rant with the few callers that dared bring the matter up and/or disagree with him.
Like many of you, I despised the Ameci's Pizza reads and his on-air pimping. And said so. When he was about to do a live read, I immediately turned the dial. Then again, they became so ubiquitous and self-serving, that I would listen to see how bad it would become. (So bad, they're good? You betcha) So Ralphish.
It's been over a week now and I miss Ralph. Not the five-minute opening question nor the frequent anti-Raiders rants nor his million "two-things-can-be-mutually-true" crappola, but Ralph himself. He'd almost have a brand.
One thing's for sure: His partner can't carry the show alone. Not by a long shot. And how funny everyone at the Knibber outpost was so enthralled with "Tommy's" emotional farewell to Ralph. That makes me laugh uncontrollably out loud when Tolbert knew all along that Ralph was on, (professionally) borrowed time; Tolbert knew, (like me), last fall that Cumulus wanted Ralph gone, but held out temporarily waiting for the right time to show him the door.
And so now we hear the mental midgets at Knibber have gone to "Byrnesie" as Tolbert's short-term partner. Yeah, Eric Byrnes, that hyper, overly-caffeinated dude that stole $30M from the Arizona D-Backs and had a brain fart in the 2003 ALDS at Fenway when he forgot to touch home plate for your Oakland A's.
Compelling radio there on Knibber from 3-7 PM. Then again, don't get me going on that subject.
So yes, I miss Ralph. He wasn't the best radio guy in sports here, but he sure beats the hell out of everyone else over there; that's not really saying much, but I'm that type of guy.
And YES: I'm hoping he gets his due out of Cumulus---THEE MOST EVIL COMPANY ON THE PLANET.

I think Clear Channel could give Cumulus a run for the money in the "Most evil company on the planet" race. The deregulation of radio killed it. Corporate radio sucks. I mourn for the days when radio people ran the business.
ReplyDeleteOn BASG blog there is a photo of Byrnszee and Tom laughing it up with Larry Baer at ATT. Then today Rich,KNBR announced Tom will be there for the groundbreaking of the 49ers new stadium. Since Ralph has been fired the fun hasn't stopped for Tom. It all sort of ties together..Tom agreeing to let his tearful goodby used on the podcast was weird..and now the groundbreaking? Its like KNBR and Tom are shoveling dirt on Ralph's grave isn't it?
ReplyDeleteYes,I do believe Tom has been waiting to be THE star.
And that photo? You tell me it doesn't greatly resemble The Last Supper...and with Judas.
DeleteWhat was Tolbert supposed to do, give up on life because Ralph got fired?
DeleteTake a day off..lay low. Maybe play some Ralph's best interviews. So far,all Tom has done is have fun. How do you go from crocodile tears..to sitting at the park the same weekend of his firing with RALPH'S REPLACEMENT???,and yucking it up??.
DeleteTom is like the grieving widow for a day...who then heads to Vegas with the insurance money,a new convertible, and "escorts"!
I tried to listen yesterday. They are definitely shooting for the 19-24 demographic and Tom is no good without Ralph. Tom and Byrnszee are awful. Too bad the demo they are shooting for do not listen to radio, unless it's a baseball game. Buh bye.
ReplyDeleteTom is no good without Ralph....
DeleteTom is fine without Ralph. Tom is much better with someone like Ted Robinson! I'd like to see him paired with a partner who has a "dryer" (spelling ?) sense of humor. Why can't they give Ray Woodson a shot?
"So yes, I miss Ralph. He wasn't the best radio guy in sports here, but he sure beats the hell out of everyone else over there; that's not really saying much, but I'm that type of guy."
ReplyDeleteWow, talk about having it both ways, a little criticism but strong support...guess you have to keep a dog in the hunt for the future, huh?
Rich,
ReplyDeleteWhen are you going back on Dino Costa?? Im sure he would love to have you back anytime
To RB, and Gene Burns - Its time like this, a person learns who their real friends are. There are some surprises, and disapointments in learing who your true friends/ supporters are.....Hope to someday hear from Ralph and Gene what they discovered about their friends...........
ReplyDeleteExcellent comments Rich.
ReplyDeleteI like Tolbert, but he clearly can't carry the show. Attempts to make him a "star" is laughable, only outdone by having that tool Byrnes team with him.
Byrnes is an arrogant no talent. Geezus, what has happened to local radio??
Talking about being on two sides on the plate, you bashed Ralph and now that he got fired , now you miss him, I don't miss Ralph at all, yea his Sabean interviews were great, but the rest was miserable, way too chummy with the guests, the Brent Jones interviews were truly horrible radio, sorry Ralph and Brent, the rest of the world does not care about college women's soccer and Brent daughter performance. He didn't follow sports any longer and he is nothing but a egomaniac dry drunk. Also when he got the Father of the Year award, total nonsense, the poor kid never had a Mother and Ralphie will be long gone and will never see his kid grow up, but that is Ralph a total selfish self absorbed putz.
ReplyDeleteTolbert got ruined by Howard Stern on Tuesday. He had a great take on the "emotional" rant.
ReplyDeleteBlah blah blah Ralph whatever. The 3-7 show however, is HORRENDOUS. I can't stand those two jocks saying 'dude' and 'whatever' every 5 minutes. For as much as he is clowned on, Radnich is the only show left worth listening to on that station.
ReplyDeleteall these talk show hosts that got canned, have been around for years in years. give it up already. the new boss want to sell more than geriactric diapers. ralph, ray t., gean b., and all the rest are fossilized mollusks
ReplyDeleteTwo things can be equally true. Ralph was phoning it in the last five years or so and Cumulus is evil. Whether his illness caused the Razor to lose his edge, I dunno. But, he was a joke on the radio. He was clueless about very knowable sports topics, particularly about local team details that anybody following the team would know. He was still pretentious and an annoying blowhard, even as he backslid into less than mediocrity. As for Tolbert, what's he supposed to do. Run around in sack cloth and ashes for six months, or immediately resign? Team him with anybody but Byrnes. Idiots feel insulted when Byrnes is called that name...
ReplyDeleteRalph was unbearable. Even worse than Fitz and Brooks. I'm a sports junkie and I can't stomach a single show on KNBR. I'd sooner listen to news updates all day on KCBS than listen to ANYTHING on KNBR.
ReplyDeleteWell, Tolbert was also a second-rate NBA forward with a 5th-rate hairdo... eh gads!
ReplyDeleteAs much as I wanted to like Barbieri, I couldn't get past his voice. The guy sounded anemic and depressed in his best times. It sounds like he has a good case for wrongful termination and I hope he is successful. But I would end up turning to something else because of the lack of spirt in his voice.
ReplyDeleteTolbert might have known, but it doesn't mean that he can't mourn. And you're right about Tom, he's brutal alone. and if they pair him with that cackling former Oakland A , people will soon tune to that fm sports station
ReplyDeleteAdd me to the list of people who believe that, while Ralph was THE "Razor" and top notch years ago, he has been mailing it in for years. Could his ouster have been handled better, probably, but the way he was treated is (regretably) no different than many long-term (severed) employees in this economy.
ReplyDeleteI also agree that Byrnzee and Mr. T isn't a winning combination.
I do have to say Tolbert and Byrnes is unlistenable, Byrnes talks like a Valley Girl. Nice life after stealing $30 million from Arizonia.
ReplyDeleteRalph and Tom were an odd couple that worked well for me. They were often more entertaining when discussing non sports topics. I'll miss Ralph's rants about anything that was bothering him and needling of the Jock Tolbert. I doubt Brian Murphy would be hosting the morning show if not for Ralph's mentoring years ago, he deserved better. Ralph was not afraid to ruffle feathers which is why I was a loyal listener...not anymore. I can't wait for Ralph to surface with his side of the story.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!! Thank You!!! For mentioning the Brian Fart!!! I'm convinced it cost Oakkand. # 5!!
ReplyDeleteDon't blame Byrnes because the Snakes was stupid enough to give a scrub like him 30mils.
ReplyDeleteKNBR will realize soon that Mr T can't carry the show by himself. Hate him or love him, The Razor attracts fans and/or listeners.
can't wait for the lawsuit though.
on a positive note- for once on this website. Brian Murphy quietly is doing a decent job. His interview with Kuiper about all the angles of the Cain- Halladay classic with matchups, pinch hitting, and strategy etc was just unbelievably good radio. That was Ralph 10 years ago. It is hard to keep doing it year after year but Murphy has grown in the job.
ReplyDeleteMurp is ok, but does not have a good relationship with Harbaugh, I wished Ted Robinson would take over those duties, and Murp asked stupid questions over and over such as what is your Mom's signature dish, lastly what the hell does Mac do, basically not much at all.
DeleteEven more embarrassing than Ralph's long questions were his juvenile interruptions while the guest was talking. I actually enjoyed when Ted Robinson or Ray Ratto would ignore Ralph's blurted remark and would continue, sometimes even adding "As I was saying Tom..." I hoped Ralph might learn to be more civil, but he didn't.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you 100%.
DeleteRalph was no longer listenable and it was time to get rid of him. End of story!
Whether his replacement is weak or has this defect or that doesn't change the fact that Ralph was way past his expiration date and deserved to be fired long ago.
Just because someone is on a crusade against Cummulus/KNBR/bosses in general doesn't justify criticizing everything they ever do.
For me, KNBR can leave Tolbert and Byrnes together if it gives Ray Woodson the 7p-10p show. Along with Ted Robinson, about all that's left on THE sports bleeder...
ReplyDeleteBrian Murphy is a candy ass. "Quietly doing a good job" my ass.
ReplyDeleteYou're soft, and require that KNBR cotton candy fix? If you want to hear this swill fine, but for those who are actually interested in teams besides the Forty Whiners and Giants do yourself a favor get Sirius XM Mad Dog Radio. Any of their hosts are 10x as sharp, quick, engaging as these B level slugs.
I came across your blog by accident looking for Ralph info. I'm from Sacramento and have always loved the Bay Area radio scence. Man, you are right, it has died like a bad joke. I, too, miss Ralph. Even though we are on the opposite extreems, I did love his passion, when he had it lately, about anything. Great writing.
ReplyDeletePeace
Mike S. Elk Grove
I can't listen to Murph and Mac in the AM, they're to "cute" for me with all the Rock 'n Roll references, sucking up to Ronnie Lott, etc. Also agree that Eric Byrnes is almost physically imposible to listen too, Tom is ok, but teaming him up with Ted Robinson, who is a CLASS act, would be a good idea,
ReplyDeleteMr. T with the Razor is all wrong!! Tom has zero personality. I heard his interview with Jim Harbaugh yesterday..It was painful to listen to...sheesh! I mean he asked Harbaugh about wrestling with his older brother...c'mon Tolbert..BORING!!!! Shame the way they did Ralph. No matter if you didn't like the Razor or his lack of enthusiasm in his voice, it was not right. 28 years? C'mon KNBR...Eric Byrnes is awful! You think Ralph's voice was bad..I can't stand the sound of Eric's voice....I stopped listening to the "________ and Mr. T". Watch your back Murph and Mac!
ReplyDeleteWhat's Tolbert supposed to do? Fight Cumulus and lose the job that feeds his family? He's a professional. Barbieri got fired. Who among us would risk losing a radio job in the dying industry simply to stand up to Cumulus over Barbieri getting canned? Come on. Ralph, ironically, was hoisted on his own pitard.
