Rod Brooks, the KNBR host, who has been the 49ers radio field reporter, was relieved of his duties by KNBR management. Apparently, the decision, according to both station and Niners' sources was mutual.
Brooks, whose wife recently gave birth to the couple's first child, was unavailable for comment.
Brooks last game was the 49ers-Dallas contest back in September. He's been the sideline reporter since 2006.
A 49ers insider told me the move was more from the KNBR end: "Rod and KNBR reached a mutual agreement that he not continue his job down on the sidelines--we, (49ers) didn't object and were OK with the decision."
Brooks continues his co-hosting duties with the "Fitz and Brooks" show on KNBR 680, (weekdays Noon-
3 PM).
A KNBR source told me that while Brooks enjoyed his 49ers gig, the amount of travel, particularly cross-country trips began to take its toll. And coincidentally, Brooks became a father. That factor may have played a part.
Said the Knibber source: "He wasn't thrilled with the decision, but I don't think he's that upset--He wants to be home with his wife and kid."

only 7 weeks late. Nice to see you and Damon talking again tho
ReplyDeleteSure, all new fathers turn down almost free money that comes with such "hard work". This story is all spin. How about what he added to the broadcast wasn't worth paying him?-That's the real truth.
ReplyDeleteSome husband-got married at the same time she gave birth? That's going to a be a short marriage.
HEY KNBR, 1 JOB TASK FOR BROOKS DOWN, 1 MORE 2 GO...FINISH HIM! THEN COMPLETE THE CIRCLE(WARRIORS MAINLY)& FIRE GIGGLES'S FAT ASS 2!

DeleteRod was rather good as a sideline reporter.
ReplyDeleteHe was able to capsualize the play quickly and concisely.
Too bad.
I'm not buying Brooks' story. Over a 4 month NFL season, he has to travel 8 weekends. For this season, this is his travel:
ReplyDeleteCincinnati
Philly
Detroit
Washington DC
Baltimore
Phoenix
Seattle
St. Louis
2 west coast trips, 3 mid-west, and 3 on the east coast. In all cases, home late Sunday night; start his 'day job' at 12:00 noon on Monday.
Someone at KNBR or the 49'ers didn't want him anymore.
Rod is a great guy, will miss him on the radio show when i'm not watching on TV.
ReplyDeleteWho is going to high five the players now on the sideline?
ReplyDeleteHe once was the Raider sideline reporter, and they are doing quite well without one since. I think most NFL teams prefer not to have someone sniffing jocks on the sideline.
ReplyDeleteRod did a decent job. I have been wondering where he has been. Thanks for the update. As for the travel not being that much of a demand, I'm pretty sure he would want to be home with the baby and a plate of bacon next Thursday than in Baltimore.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason is that nobody likes Rod Brooks, nobody beleives anything Rod Brooks says, and when the F&B show ends we will never hear from Brooks again.
ReplyDeleteHe and Fitz-just freaks of KNBR to even have a show.
Brooks (aka "Captain Obvious") hasn't been doing sideline reporting?
ReplyDeleteI didn't even notice his absence, that's how good he is.
How is it that umm, Captain umm Obvious hasn't mentioned his absence from the 49er broadcast? And the travel excuse doesn't work - he flew with the team on the charter.
ReplyDeleteSo who has been doing the reporting now? (Shows you how much I've been listening to KNBR lately).
ReplyDeleteMaybe Amy G is available for sideline reporting?????
(smirk! Bwwaaaaa-haaaaa-haaaaa!)
I thought his comments on the sideline were good and crisp. Can't say that about the F&B show though - I think they have a tough job making conversation for 3 hours every day - they seem to drag topics out.
ReplyDeleteMost "sideline reporters" are a silly waste of airtime and attention anyway -- doesn't matter if it's radio or TV.
ReplyDeleteTony Siragusa is as annoying and distracting (and content-free) as any of the locals, and he's part of Fox's "A Team". What network exec lame brain thought they needed more token ex-jocks in the broadcast, let alone "Goose"?
If the 2 guys in the booth were half decent, the networks wouldn't need all these extra sideshow players to try to maintain viewer/listener interest. I'd rather see more stats and replays than listen to some of these bozos try to chum it up with players and coaches.
I suppose we're spoiled in the Bay Area with Krukow & Kuiper or Miller & Fleming, and Drew & Randy or Dan & Jamie. Too bad there isn't really an equivalent for NFL on TV.
Though in retrospect I do have to admit I don't mind the CSN "sideline reporter" for Sharks games when it's someone other than Brody Brazil -- he's just too young and earnest or something, but Bret Hedican is okay and CSN usually doesn't make the mistake of going there too frequently.
Hmm - thinking about the FOX A team - is it just me - or - is everyone tired of the expert analyst having to comment on every play? Sometimes - there is just nothing to say and they talk talk talk. I have started to turn off the volume and just watch the screen.
ReplyDeleteRich, thanks for following up on my question about what happened to Rod. I go to all the games and listen to the radio broadcast, and we always enjoyed watching Rod on the sideline and listening to him as well. I think he added something to the broadcasts, for sure, and I think it's too bad KNBR cut him off, for whatever reason.
ReplyDeleteI find the Fox commentators (both of them, usually) to be so nondescript as to practically make them interchangeable, so I usually can't tell which one is doing the talking (about nothing).
ReplyDeleteTo be fair, CBS goobers are really no better.
I'm admittedly Bay Area-biased, but I also find it really annoying when they're between plays and these supposed professional sports commentators make some allegedly insightful comment or observation ... which they pretty clearly read that morning in the Chronicle. It's even better when they actually get it wrong. Thanks for doing a little of your own research, guys.
But it's the old song: east coast media types don't really care about anything happening outside the east coast, and apparently no one in California watches sports on TV, so why bother.
I didn't even know that Rod was married. When did he get married? Did he ever announce it on the air.
ReplyDeleteI have to confess I listed to Fritz and Brooks only 15% of the time. I switch between the news and the lame 95.7. I think 95.7 is filled with filler host of no particular impact or importance. But they are sometimes an improvement over KNBR (The Sports Bleeder (NOT LEADER)).
Many dont know but Rod is really white.
ReplyDeleteJulian Bond-ish.
Even better = Oreo Cookie.
Rod is a blood brother to Obama? He has some white blood in him?
ReplyDeleteRod was fine, but I think the real crime is that they got rid of Gary Plumber. That guy could articulate every single play on the field.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy Rod Brooks, he is humorous and honest. I don't care about the race card. His family is long term, I think that is more important than "free Money" which does not exist. I believe he brings credit to all men.
ReplyDeleteI have not figured out Rod Brooks but from some of the articles written about him, they kind of confirm what I feel about his radio personality. I think he ttys to show off and thinks he is really "cool" Sort of like a young macho teenager who laughs at his own jokes. He has the phoniest radio voice I have ever heard: reason being sometimes he talks in a "normal radio voice" and then other times he has the phony I am one of the cool hip people in the world. Anyhow Fitz is o.k. but Mr. Brooks "Just be yourself and stop acting so phony!"
ReplyDeleteI totally agree !!!
