SJ Merc's Purdy not doing local radio shows; joins Poole, Cohn and Kawakami

Mark Purdy is the latest member of local writers that are not doing local sports talk radio shows that do not pay for interviews.

Purdy is a longtime columnist for the San Jose Mercury News.

He, Monte Poole, Tim Kawakami, and Lowell Cohn of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, have unofficially joined together to essentially pass on local outlets, (KNBR and 95.7 FM) that only pay their respective "Insiders." (And the fees are modest at best).

Poole, Kawakami, Cohn and Purdy make frequent appearances on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, which pays its guests.

  1. And it didnt take long for KNBR hosts to rip Cohn and Kawakami..Bruce had laid into Kawakami that he was out of touch when he needed his comments anyways..so Bruce infered, good riddance. And Krueger's over the top ranting about Lowell Cohn-with the tacit approval of Radnich who thinks we don't notice he pretends to play good cop while allowing Kreuger to get personal on Lowell Cohn,wink,wink..

What I dont get is-why do they do out of area shows for free? Or,why do non local writers break with ranks to do our local shows for free?
Seems to me,more unity could help. One of the local big name writers could Facebook a boycott?..But,KNBR is so dirty..so your not reading anything about the boycott on their blogs or in Montes column. They still have to tread lightly.
I'm getting so fed up with local sports radio..all conservatives,shills,..its like all Raddy 24/7...

  2. That's radio's loss. I'll take most of these guys opinions over any "insider" information any day of the week. I don't care for Cohn so his vow of silence - I'm okay with lol.

But we all lose when TK, Poole and Purdy go silent. Eh, whatever. I only listen to the national guys on 1050 anyways (and Damon).

  3. The difference between guys like Lowell Cohn, Monte Poole and Mark Purdy is that they have been covering the local teams for years, go to games weekly and have solid relationships with players, coaches and front office folks that stretch back for years. As a result, their opinions and insights are a lot more credible and have greater value for the casual and hardcore sport fans.

Broadcasters such as Krueger and Bruce are talented and knowledgable, but both guys rarely venture into the locker rooms and have only been around here for 5-10 years in local radio. They usually have interns or producers set up interviews on the phone in advance or on site if they're doing a live remote broadcast. So while their opinions are strong, their credibility is
    not so impressive.

I don't blame the writers for boycotting radio stations because they're not getting paid. Local Radio has gone 'cheap and young' these days,
(like most other industries in this country), and this is one of the many reasons why local broadcasting has lost a lot of credibility in not just San Francisco, but in other major cities around the country as well.

When management decides to go 'young and cheap,' they not only cheat the audience that would like credible, reliable information, but they also cheat the industry by cutting out talented veterans. Imagine if pro sports teams did that, or hospitals, law firms or airlines.
Wouldn't you rather have a doctor that's experienced, a lawyer that has been around and knows the territory, or a pilot that can handle a crisis situation, rather than some rookie?

For eventually, people will do as they have
been doing all too frequently in recent days and turn off the radio and go to other, more reliable news outlets to get their 'sports fix.'

  5. where were all the so called KNBR insiders when Purdy let the bay area know that the Giants managaging partner was fired last August? Geez - I'll bet all the KNBR guys were a little red faced about that.

  6. I'll miss Lowell Cohen on radio about as much as I miss Glenn Dickey in the Chronicle.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I sure enjoy missing Ralph Barbieri too. He's been gone a couple of days (is he off with his beloved Tayte?) and his absence is delightful.

  7. By not appearing on local radio, these columnists are missing out on opportunities to promote their written work and the newspapers that employ them. Newspapers need all the readers they can get, and this stance by Tim, Lowell, Monte and Mark isn't doing their publications any favors. Their editors should require them to appear on radio when asked, paid or not.

  8. Now you see how two-faced and self-serving this Bruce is. I sometimes enjoy his banter, but it is largely yelling, not much substance at all. You can tell how easily he gets schooled by his guests. His takes are all mainstream stuff, nothing out of the box. He is bashing his former guests to kiss up to management, it is so obvious, it isn't even funny. The thing is those same guests have 10x the knowledge he purports to have. Also, you can easily tell the inflections in his voice when referencing certain minority groups.

  9. Let's see, respected sports columnists getting disrespected, commercials getting dumber, and dozens of departments stores & media outlets are abusing a term meant only for great jazz-infused rock and roll.

Rich, when you get a chance, please show us the real Black Friday, a clip of your favorite Steely Dan show. Somehow, I bet Donald Fagen would love the thought of all the royalties he would receive big & small from the likes of Macy's, Airport Appliance, Viacom, Disney etc. Imagine all the ills & wars Fagen could cure!;D

  10. All well and good but part of being on the radio is promoting the stories you write in the PAPER. Their employer wants them on radio talking about their columns, so long term I don't see this lasting. If I was their employer I'd want them out there talking about how great their breaking coverage is/was on a certain story. Then again, outside of Purdy breaking the Giants change I don't think any of these writers has broken a big story as of late. Kawakami was the one who said that Harbaugh was all but set to go to the Raiders because AD wanted him there and it was in his blood to be a Raider. Remember most of their stories are "plants" by agents who want their players moved or talked about more. Outside of the Bay Area TK is mostly known as the guy who got booted out of a Raiders press conf.

We're not talking about a writer like Peter Gammons or Bruce Feldman who break huge stories and are truly connected with their sources.

  11. Real "insiders" do not announce themselves as insiders. Real insiders meet only real reporters, and only in dark shadowy underground garages. Their faces are never seen. Real insiders are in witness protection programs.

Those bozos on the radio are not insiders.

  12. Every time I hear Peter Gammons talk I think he's getting more doddering and senile.

I'm not convinced the national hacks are any better than the local hacks -- they just have wider coverage.

  13. Tim Kawakami is no great lost, little biatch boy that he is, can't take a ounce of critcism on his blogs, he will ban you, don't know Monte Pool but I love Lowell he is the best and unlike Kawakami you can slam him on his blogs and columns and he is man enough to take it. Krueger a insecure tool and has nothing to offer.

  14. OMG

    Last Week Kozimor = fabulous.

The other night he was channeling Byrnes, trying to be all-cool-hip-hop-ish, chatting about RunDMC and the lot.

Then, then, then he let some guy from Modesto ramble on about 12 minutes with the caller out of breath and totally ignorant.

Kozimor started to dig at Ralphs' time off then caught himself and did the kiss-kiss moment that Ralph IS Mr KNBR. I threw up in my mouth.

    New rankings:
    1. Kevin Lynch
    2. Jim Kozimor

Too bad Hammer let Joe Castellanos slip over to 95.7

  15. Question: Why do people have to use terms like' bitch-boy' and
'pussy-whipped' and 'dissed?' Have you cretins ever thought about learning to use the english language instead of lowering yourselves to
a jr high level of dialogue? It's really very sad! I guess it shows that
your dads and moms never taught you about respect, and you probably were 'zoning out' your teachers back in your school days, because it was all 'too boring!' to pay attention and try to learn something that would help you in the future. It's all very sad, and yet it's also another commentary on how far this country has fallen.

And don't get me started about 'Tats' and the hip-hop culture. Because we now house 2 million plus Americans in our prisons, and many of those unfortunates find themselves in a constant revolving door between the streets and jails, the 'prison culture' has hijacked much of modern American society (especially our young people). Again...very sad! We're like the Romans in the middle stages of our decline.

  16. THE LOCAL STATIONS, AS WELL AS THE STATIONS IN OTHER MAJOR CITIES HAVE GONE ' YOUNG AND CHEAP' BECAUSE THAT'S THE BUSINESS MODE OF TODAY.
IT WORKS FOR THE CEOS AND THE SHAREHOLDERS, BUT THE PUBLIC ENDS UP GETTING AN INFERIOR PRODUCT, AND THE WORKERS EVENTUALLY REALIZE THAT THEY'RE BEING EXPLOITED AND QUIT TO GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. BUT MANAGEMENT DOESN'T CARE,,,BECAUSE THEY CAN GET MORE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO WILL WORK FOR CHEAP SINCE THERE ARE SCADS OF 'EAGER BEAVERS' AROUND WHO WANT AN ON- AIR JOB IN A MAJOR MARKET, AND DON'T MIND WORKING FOR PEANUTS, IT'S REALLY PATHETIC, BUT THAT'S WHAT AMERICA HAS BECOME IN THE 21ST CENTURY. AND DON'T BLAME OBAMA...BLAME INHERENT GREED, SHORTSIDEDNESS AND A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING ON THE PART OF FRONT OFFICE PEOPLE. THEY'RE THE FIRST TO WAVE THE FLAG BLINDLY AND TALK ABOUT LOYALTY, BUT THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT WHAT MADE THIS COUNTRY A ONCE GREAT PLACE TO LIVE BECAUSE THEY IGNORE THEIR OWN HISTORY. THE US. USED TO BE A COUNTRY THAT WAS FOR THE MANY, NOT THE FEW...BUT NO MORE. BROADCASTING IS ONLY A REFLECTION OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN MOST INDUSTRIES. THEY TALK ABOUT 'THE BRAND' BUT THERE IS SELDOM ANY TALK ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT BRAND, UNLESS THEIR NAME HAPPENS TO BE ON THE FORTUNE 500 LIST. SADLY, WE'RE GETTING WHAT WE DESERVE BECAUSE WE HAVE ALL BEEN FAT, DUMB AND HAPPY FOR TOO MANY YEARS.
