Isn't the term, "Investigative reporter", a sort of oxymoron? Call me naive, but I thought all reporters were investigative. Silly me.
NBC Bay Area, (KNTV) has hired a pair of star reporters, Tony Kovaleski and Jenna Susko. Kovaleski, in particular, has a great rep and is quite respected in the biz.
"I wasn't going to leave Denver for anything but a great opportunity," The team at KNTV are "committed to building the biggest and best investigative unit in the Bay Area."
Good for Kovaleski.
Comcast, which has a controlling interest in NBC, has spent considerable money to invest in hiring reporters for what it hopes will bring strong "investigative journalistic content" to KNTV, (among others).
Bottom line: NBCBA needs all the help it can obtain. It has failed to muster any significant traction into the Bay Area TV news wars. Part of that can be attributed to NBC's weak prime-time line-up, which helps local o and o's and affiliates, (Remember "Friends" and "Seinfeld on Thursday night in the 90's?)
In any event, it'll be interesting to see both of these reporters compete against the likes of Dan Noyes, (KGO-TV) and all celebrated "I-teams." Analyze this? No, investigate that!
*First impression of Susko: easier on the eyes than Anna Werner. And sharper too.
*Those peripatetic Kaiser radio ads are becoming just as obnoxious and as irritating as Kars-for-kids and State Farm. Please, spare us the grief.
*"Why are you so 'negative about Eric Rsmussen?", asks several readers. Because he likes to showboat and his reports seem contrived and forced, which is so not KTVU. And it's not just me. Kill the Peets coffee, rickster.
*Lost in the shuffle: KGO Radio will be moving from its 900 Front Street studios to 55 Hawthorne, home of the Lew Dickey funhouse known as Knibber/Cumulus central. Timing is unknown, but figure around the new year.
*I love Rich Walcoff doing sports, but the frequent use of his own voice asking questions in actualities is a bit, well, mucho-ego. Sort of like placing two "n's" in "Ronn."
*Grumpy's in media gulch near Battery and Front: home of good, cheap beer, awesome tuna melts and broken hearts of pink-slipped souls from nearby buildings.
*Yeah, I complimented Larry Beil. It's not personal, contrary to popular opinion. It becomes personal when so many schmuckos in this town project an image that is so contrary and different than their off-camera, off-mike image, see, that's the difference.
*Sports people trying their damnest to be news people. Not. (Read: ESPN at the top).
*Yeah, that was Mark Ibanez doing post-game news on KTVU following the 49ers/NY game Sunday. Ibanez has done a few newscasts and is superb in both deprtaments.
*KOIT goes Christmas music 24/7 this Friday. I guess that's really news here.
*Follow me on Twitter
Rich, not taking anything away from Kovaleski, but KNTV is a dump! Let's see how long this will last..
ReplyDeleteComcast needs to investigate why Tony Bruno and Bill (Kids? Guess what? screw'em- JoePa is de man!) Romonowski are employed by Griggs. And Romo also is con man pusher of "energy drinks" crap.
ReplyDeleteRadnich-he seems to have noticed that Paterno is fired..and dropped defending him. Only took a week for Gary to figure it out. Gary's new image of "He loves everybody" takes time to get out of the character for him. Only long timers know-he loves himself and employment with money. Phony as phony can be is that man.
The local sports media is getting out of touch with reality as they sell out..even more then in the past.
I think you need to leave Eric Rasmussen alone. You made your point (repeatedly). He seems like a nice person. And no I don't work at KTVU.
ReplyDeleteTony Kovaleski is a big time Investigative guy. He's won every Investigative award under the sun & the networks have used his work as a spring board for their own reports. We went thru the J-school at San Jose State together & have remained close friends over the years. Seems former KGO GM Valerie Staab---now head of NBC's O&O's---is looking for a niche for under performing stations. With very little Investigative presence in the bay area---NBC targeted a half dozen of the top Investigative reporters in the country. Staab thinks they can build an image around this---since the rest of what they do at KNTV isn't setting the world on fire. Tony & KMGH TV---station committment no small matter---did a stunning 30-minute special on ambulance response times to Denver International Airport. Tony's a San Jose kid too.
ReplyDeleteI love Rich Walcoff doing sports.... ok, now it all makes sense why I disagree with so many of your posts!
ReplyDeleteused to listen to Kovaleski do the SJSU football games on the campus station....then i knew he was in reno for a spell....good to see him back i will give it a watch.
ReplyDeleteRich, you lost me. You admit your ripping of Larry Beil is because of your perception of his off air personality, that his on air persona is phony. OK, so you don't want to break bread with him, but how relevant is that? To those of us who don't bounce around in media circles, his off air personality is of no significance. You want to rate the off air personalties of Bay Area media folk, well, it's your opinion and you can blast Beil all you want there. But rating his on air work poorly because you flat out don't like him, that's lame.
ReplyDeleteRich Wolcoff and ego go together. Can't stand him and Raplh. Get rid of both.
ReplyDeleteKOIT going all Xmas music on Friday is one excellent reason not to listen to them for the next several weeks. Then again the malls have been playing that crap for two or three weeks already.
ReplyDeleteSomeone need to teach Mr.Ken Bastida of KPIX how to open a newscast (for starters, how about learning how to pause)

I'd say about 2 out of 3, if not more times that I turn onto KNBR, a commercial is running. Regardless of time of day...
ReplyDelete"Grandma got run over by a Reindeer" while Da Lin got run over by a trustafaran.
ReplyDeleteIf the people at KGO radio aren't depressed enough already, they will be when they move to moldy, old 55 Hawthorne. They'll go from a view of the bay, to a view of abandoned buildings. At least the Gold Club's nearby.
ReplyDeleteBTW - I spent an hour listening to Kevin Lynch fill in for Byrnes on KNBR tonight. Lynch isn't polished, but he was a million times better than Byrnes. He conducted a fantastic interview with Alex Smith. (No, I'm not Kevin Lynch.)
Get off Walcoff's back..both he, and Kevin the Rat provide the best sports reports around the dial, hands down. Compare with the KCBS guys, or anyone on KNBR. Cheap shot, Rich. You simply don't like anyone apparently.
ReplyDeleteI vote for Ryan Leong as best sports guy
ReplyDeleteYup, the Kaiser and the Sutter ad's( with the Ukelele music lady talking about "Doktah's") are enough to send us to Krasny or more often than not - the "off" button.
ReplyDelete9:46 has got to be Ryan Leong
ReplyDeleteno sports reader buries the lead more often than
Ryan Leong ugh! Just give me the f'ing score!
What's your deal on Anna Werner? She's been gone from the Bay Area for a year, though it seems she's now a national correspondent on the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley so I guess she's not entirely gone.
