Mancow out in NY; The case for one anchor only a la KTVU; KGO-TV's Tyler at 6; Media Monday

--Welcome back to SF, Ronn Owens. The nail salons on Union street were worried.

--Former Bay Area radio misfit Mancow Muller, (haircut-on-the-BayBridge guy) is over and out in the Big Apple. His Sunday night talk show on WABC-AM in New York was among the casualties of cutbacks Friday at the station under new owner Cumulus. (Just shocking: Cumulus? Cuts? I'm stunned).

--I mentioned the KTVU weekend night solo anchoring of Ken Wayne. In my opinion, the very BEST newscast in the Bay Area. It struck me: the capable Wayne delivering the news without any partner. How novel. How nice and tranquil. Of course it helps that a pro like Wayne can do his thing without the need to have a partner. (KPIX' Ann Notarangelo also is a solo performer).

This won't ever happen, but it bears a mention: The idea of ONE ANCHOR doing a weekday, prime time, newscast. No co-anchor. A weather guesser and a sports anchor.

For one, it rids the show of unnecessary glue. It focuses the cast on one particular talent. Most importantly, it provides the viewer with a straight-forward show. Sure, it would be bold and provocative, given today's local TV newscast model, but it would work.

Give me Dana King for 30 minutes at 6: 30, solo. Or Ken Bastida at 11 PM, solo. You think Frank Somerville can guide the ship at 10? Sure he can. I'd like to see Julie Haener by herself at 5 and 6, (where KTVU is vulnerable anyway).

The point here is that the idea of a single anchor makes for a more fluid broadcast, under the right conditions. Two anchors clog the show and don't really make for a quality cast. It's not total nirvana, (I'm not a big Allen Martin fan at PIX, but he's apparently Dan Rosenheim's guy) but take a look at Channel 2's Wayne and you'll see the idea in its zenith and probably agree.

--I've been seeing a lot of Carolyn Tyler at 6 on KGO-TV, (paired with Dan Ashley) and I like what I see. That goes against the local industry wags who don't think Tyler "can carry the show" on a permanent basis. Why not? I hope this isn't a case of closet racism, (Tyler is black).

--From all accounts, Mike Mibach is a "really nice guy" over at KTVU; I wish we'd see a more polished Mibach on the air while doing "Weekend MO2." Mibach seems overly hyped and cafineated. And I and many other won't soon forget his infamous gush/golly-gee-whizz reporting from the streets of Oakland during the Oscar Grant protests.

--OK, so I'm repetitive dept--Eric Rasmussen. Why?

  1. Mancow and Damon Bruce= seperated at birth?

And speaking of why are white-especially blond- woman allowed to show cleavage, and MORE,while black woman on the news are very conservative?
If Carolyn ever shows an inch of skin below the neck-that will be the day I have a heart attack from the shock of happiness.

  2. Definitely like the notion of Julie Haener doing more, I also like Gasia at KTVU. I used to appreciate Frank Sommerville on MO2, but somehow he seems a bit forced as an anchor.

I'm glad that Heather Holmes isn't anchoring the weekend broadcasts, she's terrible, and not the eye candy that some seem to feel she is. She's none of that.

That Rasmussen guy really is a pain, for sure.

  3. So was last night's KTVU news with Key Wayne.....AND Maureen Naylor, filling in for Heather Holmes, NOT the norm? Or are you just pitching the idea for a solo cast rather than stating it in your write up?

  6. Radnich and Kreuger got into it under the guise of play acting LaRussa(Radnich) and tough reporter.(Larry) Asking why LaRussa's daughter called Ron Washington " A crackhead".
It wasnt hard to see Radnich was meaning Kreuger when he called asking Tony about it "No class" and again, pretty much ripped Krueger of having a hard heart. He's hinted slyly at that a few times now. Obvious that Radnich is tired of holding it in when Larry goes all negative.
As an observer,KNBR pairing Raddy with these types over and over is just like sticking knives into his career. Bruce,Kreuger, even Pecon just are not complimentary to what Radnich wants to put on air.
If Ralph does go..maybe Tom and his good nature would be the next Raddy partner. Then Radnich wouldnt have to work at pretending what he just heard wasn't from a jerk.

  7. 11:44, I agree, what's wrong? Nothing!

10:24, I think Maureen Naylor does a good job when she's on.

  8. Carolyn Tyler was tried...over 20 years ago. She's ok but they're not going to dislodge Carolyn Johnson at 6 to make room for Tyler.

  9. The idea of a solo news anchor is long over due.
It gives you focus on the story being given.

  10. 1144-Nothing wrong-I wholly endorse it. My point is,From FOX news-local,its mostly the golden haired girls on news who dress provocatively, with low cut blouses, mini skirts and YET,its not considered overtly sexual and ok for family news.Look at Erin Andrews too..
BUT,you never see a buxom black woman with skin tight tops, deep plunging necklines. You just don't. And its been said for years that African American woman were too sexual for family TV-and news. A black woman could never get away with being a sex kitten like Christina Loren or Darya Folsom. The emails news dept's would get I can only imagine. Whats ok with pretty white girls to look like,is slutty when black woman do it. That's the truth.

  11. You all seem to forget KGO tried solo anchors at 5pm and 11pm a few years back. Jennings on the 5pm. Ashley on the 11pm. I don't know how ratings did, but it didn't last for long.

  12. I think that KGO tried a solo anchor experiment a few years ago, with solo anchors at 5 and 11. My understanding is that rating suffered.

  13. Mancow getting fired by Cumulus proves they actually do something right once in a great while.

  14. from production side...solo anchors are good and bad...it's hard to feed information to a anchor who is talking...in a breaking news moment. Plus NDs want diversity in their newscasts...male + female, or Female + Female sets. However I do agree One anchor sets are much smoother.

  16. How can you forget the super hot Gasia Mikaelian doing the nightly 30 mins 7PM newscast on Channel 36?

  17. Pam Moore has been solo anchoring weekday newscasts at KRON for over 2 years now with just stand-up reporters at the TV's to fill in the set... You must not watch.
Vicki anchors solo on the weekends too. Give me her ANYDAY over Ken Wayne and Maureen Naylor, Ann or Diane. Vicki = hot mama!
