*The mostly elitist, disingenuous and smarmy crowd got it wrong on the gist of Bryant Gumbel's "plantation" reference to NBA commish, David Stern.
Gumbel's HBO closing remarks the other night drew the ire of the establishment sporting press who took umbrage to his assessment about Stern's arrogance toward the NBA players, (mostly black) and its union, which has been locked out by the owners.
I'm not a huge Gumbel fan, but he was dead on about Stern, the jerky petulant, arrogant ass who's conduct during this dispute has been shameful. Gumbel was making a point, figuratively speaking, and so he shocked the white boy establishment with his blunt assessment. The white boy network countered that even Charles Barkley and syndicated writer, Jayson Whitlock, sharply condemned Gumbel's remarks. Barkley and Whitlock are black so I guess that means Gumbel was wrong. As if to say that if Barkley, a semi sports-version, politically speaking, of Herman Cain, says you're wrong, well then, you are. And Whitlock is a prominent black GOPer. And continually has been anti-union, anti-player-- I rest my case.
*Best newscast in Bay Area: KTVU's weekend "10'O'Clock News" hands down with Ken Wayne. A solo anchor and weatherman/sports anchor. News. No inane chat. News, weather, sports and an ending. Crisp, solid and fresh. What a concept.
*Once CAL football's contract with KGO expires, the Bears will be headed to a KNBR/Cumulus property. Probably one of Cumulus' FM outposts as KGO goes away from sports and Cumulus moves some of its sports clientele around its various new outlets.
*Speaking of Cal football, did you catch the Bears/Utah telecast on Comcast Saturday afternoon? You missed quite an unintentional comedy show. And that sideline "reporter" was about as exciting as watching the movie, "Waterworld."
*If Dave Benz is being groomed as one of your top air talents, you have, uh, issues.
*Then again, he's not baby Jim Nantz, Scotty Reiss.
*You can detest Ann Killion and not be a misogynist. Ditto Kim Coyle, Amy G, Jennifer Jones-Lee, Chris Brecher, Cluadine Wong, Jaymee Sire, Kate Scott-- have I left anyone out?
*Vicki Liviakis on KRON: You know, put someone who's beautiful, smart, and has news cachet up the ying-yang and you have a good thing going, but KRON's suits will figure out a way to fuck it up--they're good at that.
*The new set on KPIX appeared to eat Ann Notarangelo and being that Annie is cool, that ain't nice, get a grip on that, Rosenheim and company.
*The grim reaper of Cumulus is about to make another visit to 55 Hawthorne sometime next week.

Ann Killion is a toughy-most of the time. She gets a demerit for fawning over Harbaugh. Laughing loudest at every joke he makes has "smitten" written all over it. But I do like her as a sports person.
ReplyDeleteDave Benz..anybody at Comcast notice he's hard to understand with that marbles in mouth speaking voice? And I don't like how he blew off Lowell Cohn on the Harbaugh bad call on 4th down that broke a 49er receivers ankle. Lowell Cohn said clearly..and Benz ignore him and went to a commercial. Its not the first time he's obeyed orders from headquarters to avoid anything that the local sports honchos might think embarrassing.
Vicki is still smoking hot..she might not wear the short skirts she used too..but those tight pants and her heart shaped derriere are still worth a look.
And the KRON Boobfest/plunging necklines arms race is getting to be a real attention grabber. Pam Moore should get with the program with some enhancement...
And speaking of cleavage-why are their no African American woman sexpots on local TV? You see all the blonds like Kristy Seifken,Jackie,Lisa..and of course Darya and slew of others who wear sexy clothing with blouse's unbuttoned..but not one African American female anchor or weather who are as revealing.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if it goes back to the idea that black woman "Are too sexual" for America to be seen on the news dressed provocatively?
The absolute best is that weather chck, Janu .
ReplyDeleteWow, are you kidding me?? hotter than anyone else by far.
KTUV is absolutely the Best News Outlet in the Bay Area, so I agree with you Rich!
ReplyDeleteAnd I was just thinking the other day that the "new" KPIX Set looks like the inside of an Igloo....LOL!
Bryant Gumbel dumped his black wife of 25 years for a blonde white woman.
ReplyDeleteThat's strange. Stern is a registered Democrat, and Repubs are sticking for him and against Gumbel. Stern is not used to not having his way, and it is true that his conduct leaves a lot to be desired. But the union isn't facing reality either with all of the lavish perks that low-income and middle-class people can't afford. There is a middle ground that's being treated like a disease by both sides of the NBA!
ReplyDeleteI think it has more to do with the woman and less about the station. Once upon a time we had Jayne Kennedy on national TV.
ReplyDeleteBut I'm thinking it has more to do about getting attention. There are too few black women already in news so if you are attractive and talented, you are in demand (Dana King, Sara Sidner). And if you are perhaps not as talented or a white woman which, quite frankly, there are a lot of in the news all competing for the jobs, they might "sex it up" to get noticed and to stand out.
Pat Moore is HOT as it is and too classy; she doesn't need to sell a thing and I hope she knows it.......!!!
