Tryouts with Gary and yes, Fitz is a shill, Part 235; Saturday Media Notes

First, they tried the "dibber" and that didn't work. The "P-Conn", whose culture consists of SEC football, cigarettes and beer, and THAT didn't work. Now full circle with Damon Bruce...and that didn't work.

Notice a pattern here?

IT AIN'T WORKING!

Now its "Larry and Gary." Which is probably the idea that the Hammer guy should have utilized all along, allowing Bruce to stay solo, (where he really excels), but that would have been too logical. The truth is, Radnich, in his waning days at Knibber should be left alone. He can do a few interviews, take some calls and be fairly entertaining. The concept of pairing him simply doesn't work. Raddy can't help a partner and any partner can't help him save for Bruno and we all know what happened there.

*FITZ is a SHILL Part 235: Just as soon as Pete Guber and Joe Lacob took over the W's, Fitz began his one-man brown-toilet paper card, showering the new owners with loads of sweet nothings and the golf excursions. This, after getting showered with a three-year contract extension by outgoing Cohan/Rowell.

He's built up enough anti-giggles venom to fill the arena. One can only wonder how long before the new guys get a clue and read the room. Lacob knows the pulse of the people and if there is a change, (and it could yet take place), he won't hesitate to cut a check with Rudy and tell him to take a one-way ticket back to South Bend.

*Speaking of Bruce, he'll be back on the air Tuesday, (Noon-4 PM KNBR 1050) I have had my differences with him, but he clearly outshines the rest of the team over there. Damon ALONE without any shrubs is OK with me. And at least he says something which is a far cry from the others.

  1. "allowing Bruce to stay solo, (where he really excels)"

    Bruce really excels? REALLY?

  2. Fitz was Cohan's kind of guy. Although I cant see why Lacob couldnt have voided that contract. It could be that Lacob himself also likes having a mole,a company spy and snitch that is Fitz until they pry the microphone from his cold dead fingers. I have read many people say they have sent Lacob email on their hate of Fitz...and Lacob stays silent. Papa just cant get an answer...

  3. Hey Rich- Once again you've 'read the room' correctly. An aging Raddy may be thin and worn, but to many of us he's like a comfortable old jacket, and we know his sillyness and put-on rants will be amusing. But he should be left alone in his 'sunset' years. Let him banter with the dysfunctional, pill-popping ex-marine board op known as 'P-Con', or trade its with the smooth talking newcomer Kate Scott who sounds like a female version of some of these throaty, "hey I'm a radio broadcaster and I'm cool!" kind of personalities.

Damon meanwhile is good alone, but he should be back on KNBR. Blow out Fitz and move Brooks back to 1050 where he was originally. That way, you've got one of your strongest assets to fill a mid day hole that has been unlistenable for as many years as these two boobs have been around.
Yes Damon is a know it all and he bloviates but the guy also has moxie and talent and knows radio. I have great respect for Damon, even when he goes off on some of his silly tangents. He's creative, quick witted, and has a good overview of where things are going in the bay area sports scene. The kids on the block should take note. Actually, if they were smart they'd steal him away from knibber and build their staff around him.

As far as Rudy or 'giggles' goes, it's no surprise that he'll be around for awhile. Fitz has always been an expert in backstabbing, intriguing, maneuvering, and of course, brown-nosing. He's taken that latter quality to a new level. Eventually the new owners will get hip to the 'Giggler' but unfortunately I think we're going to be saddled with him for another year!

  4. This used to be an interesting blog, but your obsession with KNBR, and sports radio in general, has gone over the top. Too bad, because there are so many interesting Bay Area media backstories that are begging to be covered.

  5. Funny, but Radnich was lecturing on his show that when things dont go your way for the manyeth time-maybe you should consider that its you and not someone elses fault.
So,time for Gary to add up the KNBR partnerships he's burned through while the other KNBR shows stay the same-for decades the same pairings.
I think Kate Scott was brought in because they knew Gary can't work with men..didnt he just about torture Dan Dibly day in day out? always rubbing it in it's the GARY show,"I made you",etc?
A total love slave exception like pecon was good for Gary, bad for the show.
And it made you feel sorry for the old man when Damon Bruce was dismantling "Garys World" piece by piece.
Kruger's good for a few months...then he will get burned out too hearing the same storys, the same punchline. You'll see.

  7. I'm not a Bruce fan, but I see his value as a solo guy

  8. It wasn't Radnich's decision to get rid of Bruno was it? They had a lot of chemistry.

  9. i enjoy D Bruce. At least he criticizes the local teams. He's not a cheerleader like mac and mutley,or one of the other Larry Baer minions who spout the company line. If it aint all rosy tell me the truth. At least damon has an opinion and takes a stand on issues. If you don't agree so be it. knbr is becoming un-listenable, but I do enjoy this blog and the comments that follow. It shows there are other frustrated radio listeners out there.

  10. any thoughts on this Adam Meyer guy being on the air twice in one day?

  12. D.Bruces cross to bare on 1050 is that Jed who calls in to KNBR with Damon AND Radnich..would never call in to 1050 and Damon alone. Neither would any of those who talk to Murphy and the Muppets,Ralph the loyal or Raddy the republican lover of all ownerships.
    So,he rants with no answers...just 1050 silence.

  13. Hey Rich- I love it when you rip on KNBR,
particularly your rants about Raddy, 'Giggles' and 'P-Con.' Now how about some diatribes concerning the morning frat boys? (Murph and Mack) And man, did the FM talk show guys get their panties all in a twist when you took some shots at them. It's interesting how the KNBR folks have at least a little thicker skin than the new boys in town at the FM station. Perhaps it's because they're used to getting ripped by you and the FM boys want a grace period since they just started. But that ain't gonna happen with sherrif Richie in town!

  14. Brooks is unlistenable, and Fitz is insufferable. KNBR should have Radnich (bring back Bruno) 9-12, and Bruce 12-3.

  15. I was a little bored on saturday morning around 11:30 a.m. so I attempted to listen to the "Saloon" on the Death Star 680.I thought I would give fatboy P-Cant the benefit of the doubt(you know without the two d-bags in the morning or old Fatnich),it was even worse than I thought it would be!Just him spewing his southern b.s. style of college football & about a hundred different ANNOYING drops.I couldn't believe I wasted a 1/2 hour on his bloated bald fat ass.Same ol shit, different day was all this so-called "show" was! Yes, I know I am writing this at 4:30 a.m., but I just arrived home from watching my Bulldogs gettin their ass beat by a CRAP Cal team,so I had to piss on someone, lol. But seriously, dude was AWFUL!

  16. i'm a 46 year old mom of two teenage boys who worship the ground damon bruce walks on. I love him too. That interview with jed york we listened to on the way to giants game was spectacular. so i just wanted to put it out there from a sports mom's perspective. i think damon has alot more fans than gary.

  17. I was another unfortunate person who somehow stumbled onto Patrick Connor's 'the saloon' the other morning as I was idly turning my radio dial while driving into the city. I was hoping to hear some intelligent sportstalk such as Marty Lurie's weekend baseball shows, but instead I listened in astonished silence to a red-neck, scratchy voiced ex marine hold forth like some sort of annoying novice who has no clue about what a broadcaster should sound like. I couldn't believe that even KNBR could give this idiot his own program. I guess they're desperate!

Needless to say, I wasted a half an hour of my time listening while on a drive, as I guess I had to listen just to make sure that this wasn't some sort of a joke. I guess I also kept listening because I couldn't believe a once proud and respectable radio station would put such a rank amateur, nit -wit and fraud such as P-Con on the air.

But that's what sportstalk has become these days; a repository for brown nosers and back-stabblers such as Fitz, bloviating loudmouths such as Tierney on the new 'Game,' disengenuous, insecure ego-maniacs like Raddy, and annoying frat boys like Murph and Mack. The whole foul smelling mess that KNBR has become out to be shoveled into a latrine and cvovered up with quick-lime to mask the odor!

But this latest incredibly stupid move by KNBR to put a dysfunctional, imbecelic board operator (that's his main job) on the air smacks of the kind of move that Lee Hammer seems to be making lately. Perhaps he's desperate to redeem himself in the eyes of his corporate bosses Bill Burgeroff and Lou 'The Dickhead" Dickey after the Raddy/Damon month long fiasco.

In any case, the only time I will listen to KNBR in the future is when they carry live sports events such as the Giants and 49ers. When the rest of KNBR's noise and nonsense is on, I, along with many other intelligent and curious bay area listeners will turn to something a little more illuminating, such as KQED FM!

  18. I have no use for the morning guys. Murphy is a Giants' shill. I like Radnich. He treats his callers with respect and I miss his interaction with
Bruno. Fitz is a pompous ass and I have stopped listening to his show. He talks down to his callers.
I doubt if he ever PLAYED sports -- just talks about it. The Notre Dame BS is tired. No one cares.
Take a page out of Ted Robinson's book. He also went to ND, but doesn't keep reminding everyone. Tolbert is fabulous - my favorite host. Ralph is a first class phony who ripped on Bonds when he was with the Pirates and then kissed his butt when the Giants acquired him.

  20. But you have to be honest-Bruce WANTED 9-12. He liked that it was televised sports talk...huge exposure. Going back to 1050 is not a raise in stature-its a slap back.
And if you read the KNBR tweats he took a shot at Radnich by saying that knows what some coach is going through forced to use broken down old talents. Bruce added "I can identify with that"...and he's only worked with Radnich-right? or,lol,he' also speaking of Kreueger who sure comes off as a Bruce backstabber.
Only Lee Hammer pits his people against each other...then pairs them up later and they have to play "friends" on air.
And I havent heard the Pecon show..but the guys moronic tea party of the young lifestyle isn't anything to miss. I'm sure he must have said "I'm no homo" a dozen times already.
Besides, the guy is about a decade away from needing to carry an oxygen tank.
Lee Hammer can sure pick 'em.

  21. I thought Pea Con was ok in small doses on the various morning shows and his NFL Draft profiles were entertaining. That being said how could anyone in their right mind sign off on the saloon concept...absolutley awful. Sounds like they gave him a show as payback for working overtime...pure...the proper adjective escapes me!

  22. Agree with 8:28 I only check this page for KNBR reports. Anything else and I'm gone pissed I clicked on this site.

  23. The perfect partner for Gary has always been Ray Woodson. Radnich likes him, doesn't appear "threatened" as he does with some other guys...and Woodson sounds better as a sidekick in this slot than any other placement. It's a fun mix. Ray brings consider knowledge and a light touch. Can't believe KNBR didn't nail this down ages ago.

  24. Damon talks out of his ass like Jim Carrey only Carrey is funny.

  25. Its going to be hard to listen to Bruce rant on Sabean and how Sabean doesnt know what he's doing while Bruce himself couldn't see he and Radnich were a disaster.

  26. Absolutely agree with the post at:

Woodson has been the best thing about KNBR for a very long time. He's great with Radnich or by himself. The brainiacs at the flame choker have never seemed to have a clue about what they have there. I guess if you're not an arrogant loud mouth or a former jock sniffing your own old rotted jock you're no good. Only time that I'll listen at night anymore is when Ray is on.

  27. Rich, without piling on (too high) I cannot stand the Warrior's Leprechaun, Bob Fitzgerald. It is said the opposite of love isn't hate, it's not caring. Well, I HATE Fitz because I care. I'm very close to never listening to another W's game with him at the mike.

New ownership has other worries right now, but after the labor agreement is signed, I'd suggest that Lacob give Fitz the boot...it would be a very popular move!

  28. Twice,Raddy has said it briefly-"It didnt work". Then in a big laugh added "Damon's happier on 1050". Like what Moms tell kids after they took the dog to the pound.
