KGO/Ronn Owens and commercial spots overload; Stacy Taylor; Sunday sermon

In Sunday morning's SF Chronicle Pink section, a letter writer, complains about the massive amounts of commercials on KGO Radio, particularly the Ronn Owens show in the morning.

The letter writer says he no longer listens to KGO because of that spot overload. He's not alone.

I've pointed out, (as did the writer), that Owens' show is about 41 minutes of actual content, while a whopping 19 minutes is devoted to spots, promos, news updates and PSA's. That's nearly a third of the hour. Not only is that hurting Owen's show, but driving away the few remaining KGO loyalists.

Sure, Owens and KGO brass can boast that the show makes a lot of money for the station, but long-term, only marginalizes his program. It also disrupts the flow of the show and I know Owens is displeased with the flow of segments--he just can't say it publicly.

**Stacy Taylor, the ex-San Diego-area talk-show veteran has been doing a lot of sub work for KGO; I like Taylor's style and would love to hear more of him.

  1. Isn't that what KNBR is doing at no.5 in the ratings? How many commercials are they running 9-12? add the "traffic" updates-who depends on KNBR for that? or even worse, their business news?? Its got to be an excuse to have more clients for the ad dept. to sign up.
Maybe Tony Bruno took up that commercial space they now fill?. He wasnt dropped over morals. KNBR has none.

  2. Was in and out of my car Thursday morning when Ronn had Robert Reich as his guest. Listened to the archive this morning and jotted down the actual time of the interview.

Of the 56 minutes available (show started at 9:04) I counted 36-37 minutes of conversation between the commercials, traffic and news updates.

When listening to KGO I find myself tuning back and forth to KCBS or other stations to escape the numerous, and often annoying ads. I'm sure I am not alone.

  3. What will KGO be when the KNBR owners take over?

  4. Stacy Taylor is a breath of fresh air. I hope he finds a permanent slot on KGO.

  6. Stacy Taylor rocks. I find myself tuning in with regularity on Saturdays. I think one of the best moves KGO has made is cut Bob Brinker in half, no more Saturday money talk. Another excellent move was to get rid of Dr Marty "blowhard" Nemko on Sundays. I know Rich hates Karel (we know, it has nothing to do with gays blah blah) but the Bin Laden news happened during Nemko's old time slot. I was glad Karel was on to cover it. Just one of several other examples.

  7. Really, really enjoying Stacy! Do wish they would have him on as sub for all their "personalities". Saturday is not enough. Would like to have him as a regular. What is the story on him?

Pat isn't horrible, her voice bothers me, as well, but beyond that, have a feeling that she is not really up on some of the things she discusses. Also have the feeling that she doesn't listen to many of the regular KGO shows (well, guess it's hard to fault her on that one). But she tends to beat horses that have already been made into glue; and gives the impression that she thinks what she is presenting is something new. I know it would be impossible to listen 24 7 but believe that subs should do a podcast check of the 'major' shows on KGO.
I also wish they would use Christine more frequently.
Hoping Gene hangs in there....sure they would replace him with Pat, and that would be terrible!
