Not that it had a chance, but oldies 1550 AM, KFRC is no more and is now playing Hindu music. CBS/Infinity brokered the time to an ethnic broadcast group last week.
1550 AM "Oldies" really didn't have a chance. It is in what the radio biz people refer to as the "Death Valley" of dial positions, the very last clear channel all the way to the right. It's only non-computer generated content was the Oakland Raiders AM flagship, (The Raiders will stay on CBS FMer, "Live 105").
Most people in the Bay Area will remember the old KFRC, (610 AM, now "Family Radio"), the late 60's, 70's and early-mid 80 AM Top 40 radio powerhouse.

Another one to remove from my presets....
ReplyDeleteI hear there is a Hindu version of the Radnich-and-Damon Bruce show in the works. One guy is a typical eastern-province Hindi who rants and raves about nothing and to no one in particular. The other is a Hindi has-been who tries to sound like he's from the Hindu 'hood.
ReplyDeleteFrom Oldies to Bollywood.
ReplyDeleteBuurrrrhhhhaaaaaaaaa.
Wonder what happens next year with Raiders Radio Network & Compass Media? New station soon...
KFRC lost it's last bit of luster when it switched from 610 and Bobby Ocean was let go.
ReplyDeleteNow you tell me-my ears were assaulted by that screaching with banging pots and pans "music" this morning.
ReplyDeleteWho would ever have thought real rock and roll would disappear from the bay area radio? And dont give me that Bone crap of the same five Zep songs played over and over to infinity.
So there are now 2 Hindi stations that took over a Spanish & oldies formats. The bigger question becomes: which station is next for a Hindi format change?
ReplyDeleteRock is Dead!
ReplyDeleteTime to get your Curry and Cricket on, my friend!!
KFRC died when Dr Don did. RIP KFRC and Don.
ReplyDeleteShame on CBS.
ReplyDeleteThis new station should be the only (& ideal) outlet for those god-awful Metro PCS ads.
ReplyDeleteGuess it's time for Facebook to add 24/7 radio to its 610KFRC page, when the only Hindu-related music that was played was George "Hare Krishna" Harrison (RIP, George; hard to believe it's been 10 years this coming November) and his sitar.
I'm gonna miss KFRC 1550 am. Even though it was syndicated shows and had no local talent or flavor, I liked Scott Shannon in the mornings and being able to switch away from KNBR or other inane morning shows on my drive in to work.
ReplyDeleteYep,KFRC might have been AM lofi, but nobody else is going to play "Gallery" or even Linda Ronstadt and blue bayou. Regular doses of the Eagles and KC and his Sunshine band.
ReplyDeleteIf anybody knows of where on free radio I can find the past again...
KKSF-103.7 FM
ReplyDeleteI loved the "oldies but goodies" that KFRC played, which I grew up on....DITT0 - SHAME ON CBS!!! 1550 on the dial is dead to me!!
ReplyDeleteGood station gone. Why is kcbs on fm? Put oldies in there fm slot.
ReplyDeleteanother one bites the dust. songs worth listening to no more. where are the songs today. hip hop crap that passes for todays culture. over pretentious one name artists of today making babble which passes for music. i guess our generation being passed by. another generation bites the dust
ReplyDeleteKFRC AM-1550 "True Oldies" did not have a chance from the start because it was put on the AM Band and it was 100% Syndicated broadcast.
ReplyDeleteThe Bay Area's Oldies station is now Oldies 103.7 (KKSF FM).
This sucks! it's like not being able to go home again, very sad! come back KFRC!
ReplyDeleteOn my All night Shoutcast station!

KFRC was a quality radio station compared to many active ones broadcasting in the Bay Area. It's wasn't logical to cancel it. 103.7, the newest oldies channel it o.k., but KFRC was more qualitative because it played more of a variety of songs and it played songs from the 60's and 70's eras. The 80's isn 't oldies, to me, which is include in the playlist for 103.7 fm.
ReplyDeleteI loved all those oldies, and Scott Shannon's trivia. Been listening to KFRC since the sixties. This isn't the first time in recent years it was revived and then went away. Shame on the Bay Area. I wish these radio stations would get their retro shit together!!!
ReplyDeleteThe only piece left of KFRC is on 106.9 HD2 and online at radio.com as "KFRC.COM Classic Hits" (as it has been since KCBS took over the FM). You cannot get to KFRC.COM online. The site has never been fixed since 1550 AM was discontinued on Sept 1. You still get an error message. If CBS wants to preserve the KFRC call letters in San Francisco, they should at least provide a web page.
ReplyDeleteThe only piece left of KFRC on 106.9 HD2 as "KFRC.COM Classic Hits" has been removed from radio.com. The station is still listed on the HD radio directory. I don't have an HD Radio, so I don't know if they're even broadcasting the classic hits on the HD Radio. All HD2 stations should have online listening available.
ReplyDeleteKFRC should have kept the Classic Hits format back in October 2008 when the station was converted to a simulcast KCBS AM news. That was a big mistake. The Classic Hits format remains strong on San Francisco's new 103.7 FM.
I live in Arkansas and listened every morning in my office. This was the best oldies station, will really miss it.
