Dear Tierney and Lund; RL 415 Media responds to 95.7 FM; Thursday Pulse

Hey guys. Thanks for checking in. Shit, imagine having to write back to a fucking blogger. I mean, some of your minions said I was just bitter and disgruntled. How poignant, eh? Really, though, I'm just having a little party and you guys happened to check in. Terrific. I'll even comp you at the door.

Yo Tierney? Nice of you to chime in; great that you "put your name behind your words." Cool, dude. You chided me because I wasn't impressed with "The Game", schmaim, whatever it is. Yeah, you guys yell a lot, not literally, (sometimes), but figuratively speaking, yeah, you scream. And yeah, you just got here and really don't know the market.

NY isn't SF. Too bad too, cause the bagels suck and so does the pizza. But that's another story.

So anyway, usually guys, radio guys, like to come here and scream. They haven't even decorated the apartment yet, haven't even sent postcards of the GG Bridge to their ex-girlfriends, and they think they know the market.

Shit, I don't even know the market. The business has changed. Talent used to be a commodity, but now its simply an afterthought. You guys aren't that bad, but the overall operation at your joint, (I've listened--not a lot, but enough to know a little), is predictable. Not very entertaining either. Then again, you're no different than most terrestrial radio, so it's no big deal. What the fuck? Did you really think you would rock this market? Not to say SF is a testament to radio glory--quite the contrary, we suck here. We haven't had any real talent since Howard Stern left Live 105. Pretty fuckin' pathetic, eh? You bet.

But back to you guys. I'm delighted you read the blog. At least you're transparent fakers. But you gotta do away with the shtick. It's not genuine, at least I don't think it is, because you don't know the hood yet. Get out a little. Have a few. Scope the scene. Look, chances are you'll be packing the bags in another year anyway, (hey, I know Entercom doesn't pay that well--your own co-workers told me), but you knew that coming in.

It's not your fault that the A's have fallen. They have sucko owners. But really, I'm not that impressed with the product thus far. Great, sports talk on FM. Wowie! Oompa, doompa, doo! I'll give you this, you're not Knibber, they really do suck and to that extent, I'll take you guys over the 55 Hawthorne duds. They really suck. I mean, have you heard about Cumulus? They make you guys look like Mother Teresa. If they didn't have the Giants and the Niners, they'd be carp. Other than that, they're complete shit.

I've listened to the morning show, what's their name?, Rise guys? Not bad, just de-bone Opie and I'll listen more. Tierney? Take some time. Like I said, get to know the land. Have a cold one at Green's and eat a corned-beef sandwich at Tommy's Joynt.

Lund? You're trying to be be uber-hip and you haven't earned the right yet. Be NORMAL. Just calm down and RELAX. Be yourself, for better or worse. Pretend for a moment that you're massaging Ann Hathaway, just take it easy. Look, this is radio, not brain surgery. And you're on fucking FM! So far, the Arbitrons are not responding, but it takes time. Maybe its not in the cards. But I like the fact that you took the time to write.

You acknowledge my greatness. I gotta hand it to you, and I appreciate that, really I do. The 415 Media regulars know this is a tough room to break into, but they've grown accustomed to my 'tude, my weaknesses, my bi-polar tendencies, one thing for sure, you're in good company.

And yes, so far, again, I'm not impressed. I told your PR guy to take my name off the 95.7 mailing list because I'm not interested in your propaganda. You came here riding on a white horse and so far, you're not even a 30-1 pick at Golden Gate Fields. It takes time and understanding to become Secretariat. You're promos are cute and I like the anti-KNBR pokes, but if you really want to win over the town, stick to your own identity and forget about the losers over there. they really don't have a fucking clue. I'll give you this, at least you don't have interns doing updates and drugged-out producers sleeping inside the radio station.

Tierney, or "Brand Tierney", or whatever the fuck you are, if you want to really go at it, we can go one-on-one, you know, word spoken? The spoken word? Remember that. I doubt your boss, Barrett, would go for that because most PD's don't care for me cause I tend to lay it out, but if you truly, want to go audio toe-to-toe, you know where to find me.

Have a nice day and say hi to the boys and girls.

  2. Its taking time to shake out the guys who grow on you and who doesn't. The rise guys of Dibs and Whitey are doing a fine job..but the other guy, who's name I can never remember..he's like those voices you hear on PBS radio to a "t". Or those SNL skits of PBS radio..sweaty balls anyone?
Brandon is a lot of yelling. He comes across as those shaved head gotee guys wearing the expensive team jackets you see in football stadiums. Not a bay area type. I think Eric Davis wants to punch him..most days.
Lund and Papa work..with Urban ,still good but lower level good..and with Bernstein, dull.

  3. My only request is that you stay off the sauce when you're attempting a rant like this. Perhaps then your readers might understand what you're trying to say.

  4. What's with all the foul language? Possibly you could tone it up a bit.

  6. Stern on Live 105? Oh please! That was the downhill slide for that station. We use to get Alex Bennett before. When Stern and Love Lines were piped in, it ceased being a BAY AREA radio station and started to become a distribution center for product out of LA & NYC.

Don't like the Shock Jock morning shows with numskull sidekicks? Stern's the poster boy for that crap!

  7. Oh please, 95.7 is a joke. Dibley and the rise guys blow, Townsend is a A's apologist, tittle puts everyone to sleep, lund is ok and Tierney is decent but talks over eric Davis too much. Give me the knibbler anytime over that fm station.

  8. I discovered this blog recently, and liked some inside dirt on the sports radio war going on in the Bay Area. I personally prefer 95.7 over knbr real sports talk without having to tow a company line. This rant you just went on shows that you have an over inflated sense of Ego that negates any real points you may have regarding The Game. Try writing like a professional instead of a over privileged testosterone fueled prepubescent child

  9. 95.7 isn't great, but it beats the crap out of the one-sided, fake and boring 680. I'm glad there's an alternative.

  10. feel free to leave your basement and venture over to a stadium press box for once, and I'm happy to chat with you...

  11. Is Tierney looking to get fired faster than he was in NY? DING!

Bay Area Sports existed before you came here and they will be here after you leave.

  12. Geez Brandon...lighten up...it's only blog. Take more time to study up on the local teams and get out and cover some games and meet some people...get to know the area and the fans....you'll spend less time worrying about a blog that takes some shots at everyone...not just you. If you're going to last in this biz..develop a thick skin...you don't find a lot of the other sportstalk hosts responding angrily to Rich's criticisms and observations!

  13. Your bi-polar tendencies? So, Lieberman, you are the Bobby Brown of Bay Bloggers? And there's no Whitney-type girlfriend that gets you so emotional?

I may not always agree with your TV personality critiques (lay off Annie K, the Comcast higher-ups are always on her like a cheap suit; you may want to read her SI columns - they happen to be genuine and excellent). But the business suits that pretend to care about listeners yet have no clue and only care about the bottom line? You go, dude! Expose those Cumulus, Entercom, Clear Channel clowns as much as you can! Keep making yourself their worst nightmare! They need their comeuppance!

  14. I think Brandon should learn about every bay area talent who lasted a decade or more...every single one was mellow-on air at least. Thats the common denominator..left wing or right wing or the sports wing...even weather and traffic wing.
The shouting angry types come and go.
Although Brandon's pard'ner-E.Davis sure presses buttons with his 49ers do no wrong and is aggravating with that "On the right path " crap he preaches.
Should make for interesting listening during the proseason...I wonder what clout Jed has over 95.7? something Brandon might have to worry about.

  15. Is it common in NY to refer to everyone as "Buddy"? I've tried listening to 95.7 in lieu of 24/7 baseball on KNBoRe, but the Tierney guy makes me want to cut out my eardrums when he goes to the "Buddy" card every other syllable.

It's like listening to DJ Pauly D mangle a radio show.

  16. Tierney needs to grow up and stop bitching about being taken to task by a blogger. You'd think a guy from NYC wouldn't worry so much about this nonsense. I know he wants to make a good impression and take KNBR down, but that is not going to happen for a number of reasons:

1.) KNBR has been doing this all-sports thing
(such as it is...for 22 years, and for the first 17 (before Cumulus came along and bought the station) they were pretty respectable.

2.) KNBR has a 50,000 watt clear channel signal and promotes the heck out of it's shows. "The Game" can't be heard outside of the bay area and so far, I've seen zero, zilch, no promotion of their product anywhere

3.) KNBR has the Giants, 49ers and Warriors. "The game? it has the A's and the Sharks. How many people actually listen to those games on the radio? Not many!

4.) Finally...KNBR has the 'brand.' The 'Game' is trying to establish a brand. IN the bay area market, it takes a long time for a new format or a new personality to get some traction and get noticed. I don't see any of the 'brilliant' moves that the new Program Director at the 'Game' has made to bring in non-entities, out-of-towners, neophytes and journeymen (Tittle, Bernstein, Dibbley) having much sizzle with the bay area audience.

Eventually, 'Game' will develop a local and loyal small following, because enough people have wearied of KNBR's lazy, unimaginative approach, but when Tierney says: "we're going to try and take over this market from KNBR" he's whistling [past the graveyard!
