Christine Craft and her feathered looks, circa 1978

THE "STAY CLASSY, SAN FRANCISCO" LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT HON... Courtesy photo

Christine Craft forwards me this chick-fillet picture, (Chris, it's cool, you look great--compliment), from her days as an anchor in the 70's at KEYT in Santa Barbara.

(Soon after, Craft went to Kansas City and ended up suing a local TV station for gender discrimination).

Currently, Craft is a prime substitute on KGO Radio. Too bad Ms. Craft couldn't be heard more often, ditto Stacy Taylor, but what the hell do I know, I'm just a damn blogger.

  1. The Chronicle's Peter Hartlaub solicited entrants in the Feathered Hair contest. Having known my share of hot rollers and hairspray, I thought I could come up with a pretty good entry. I'm thrilled to be a finalist. I wonder if all that hairspray harmed our lungs?

  2. I remember back in '92 or '93 when she would send out glamour photos (upon request) to her KGO listeners. Always seemed kind of odd coming from a person who claimed (successfully) to have been fired over her looks and not on merit. Perhaps she will explain why she did that.

  3. Ugly then, and bitter ugly now.

  4. Yeah,in those day she didnt think being hired because your young, hot, thin, and blond haired with a Farrah look with the wettest looking lipstick was so wrong.

  5. Christine Craft is my absolute favorite on KGO, no matter how she wears her hair. The empty suits in management will likely never give her a regular slot, but at least they could schedule her more often as a sub.

  6. I wasn't fired. I was demoted because I wouldn't play dumb to make the men look smarter. During Gulf War I when I was on KFBK in Sacramento, I did not support sending U.S. troops to avenge Kuwait. I was challenged by a listener to 'PUT MY BODY WHERE MY MOUTH WAS". Ergo..the quite modest pin-up of my back showing less flesh than a Speedo and bearing a slogan of support for the USA, if not the war. The photos were sold to raise money to pay the car payments, and utility bills of soldiers stationed in the Gulf, reservists with families at home without resources. I'm extremely proud of that effort and the picture was cute as hell. There is nothing wrong with being either cute or brainy. Neither excludes one from asserting legal rights in any context. craft

  7. Christine, are you ever going to have your own website?

  8. Thank you, Christine, for clearing up the air. I do remember all the harassment you dealt with in the 1980s. CNN made a big deal about it at that time. Your bounce-back at KGO is very impressive, even with all the upheaval going on above you, Gene Burns, Ronn Owens, etc. Keep up the fine work and better listener camaraderie!

  9. Craft, Taylor and Peter B. Collins can sub any time.
I think too many of the hosts spend too much time venting what they think. The three subs do a better job of creating an environment for an open discussion than most of the regulars.

  11. I love Christine and how she talks about her dogs. Perhaps she could extend some of the same courtesy to her callers, however....

  12. re websites: I guess I thought they'd be less ..gulp....expensive!!!!I have a great web designer buddy...but am wavering on the brink of spending that much mmmmmmoney. what to do? Would it be a step forward to embrace the future?...or a colossal waste of greenbacks? My nieces at CAL tell me I'm nuts not to..and they are usually right.

  13. RE: website...I have a great website designer buddy..but am aghast at the MMMMONEY required to do it right. I'm weighing the virtues of the website versus poverty in the current climate. A necessary tool for the future..or a colossal waste of greenbacks? My nieces at Cal say go for it immediately They are usually right. thoughts on what a good website should cost and should include for a broadcaster?

  14. I was at UCSB in the early 80's and KEYT was the only channel we got without cable. Her co-anchor was King Harris, I'm not making that up.

  15. @ 6:37 nice post, what an asshole.

  16. She is angry and bitter. She has no respect for anyone who disagrees with her. I don't enjoy listening to her.

  17. King Harris is on the radio in SLO.He is the scion of a well-known Woodside family. He has never had feathered hair and got his start working with Don Sherwood. He is at this point undiapered

  18. @ 9:37- I agree with your critique of her show, but to call the woman ugly is not cool.

  19. Christine Craft. No thanks. That chick is too angry.
    I'll pass.

  20. Angry and Bitter...that is soooo me, especially for the last ten whole days. There I was, helplessly throwing bolts of anger and bitterness towards everyone and everything..but then a wonderful breezy peace settled over me. Gone was the anger, gone was the bitterness(word used by the misogynistic crew to intimidate strong American women) and gone was that darling air conditioning repairman. All is well even though the forecast says bad air and century mark temps today where I am. I'm so sweet now, it's cloying. craft

    1. Christine, I hope you read this. It's time -- long over due -- that you consider doing something else. The fact that you indeed defended the acts of those two San Fran Preso Canario dogs who mauled Diane Whipple to death should have been a wakeup call that it is time... And, it was only a matter of time then that you'd let your thirst for attention and need to be the topic of conversation get in the way of thinking rationally. Did you even for a moment think that your comments could hurt the family of Ms Whipple, on top of the pain they must have already suffered? It's just a matter of time, once again, that your vanity will get the better of you and we'll have to hear about it over the airways. For those of you do not know how insensitive Craft is, read about the mauling death of Whipple here -- there is no way to explain yourself out of this one Craft:

  23. @8:47 AM Christine (or Ms. Craft), Many yrs ago, I met you at the KGO Newsroom. I thought you were a very nice person. # In terms of the web identity, start with a blog. Minimize your cost factor as much as possible until you can figure out your services. Good luck.

  25. Christine Craft is the coldest bitch on earth. She is a horrible interviewer and a rotten talk show host.

She was butt ugly then and I can only imagine how she must look now.

    No talent AND ugly...great combo

  26. sniff..I'm so devastated by this woman who is calling me the coldest bitch on earth. perhaps she's not read my book ..which I titled "TOO OLD, TOO UGLY, NOT DEFERENTIAL TO MEN"..does she think I'm intimidated by being called ugly, horrible, rotten? clue: I'm not. Every single job I ever had in television..from KSBW to KPIX to CBS network..and on and on...I never sought..I was asked to work for some pretty terrific people..including KGO which called me to fill-in when I was doing radio in Sacramento. Do you mean to tell me that I was recruited for all those jobs because I was both butt ugly and untalented? For the record..I've never claimed to be a beauty...just cute as hell and a lawyer who works hard and successfully for injured workers and the disabled. Wouldn't you love to see a photo of the woman calling me all these things.. I can just imagine...as she is.

    1. Wow, you're promoting your book. Looks like you need to. Trust me, I doubt this person will buy your book to help your defense. Gonna take lot more than that to get off the hook with a lot of people. Selling on amazon.com for $0.01 (yes, a penny) for a 'used' copy or $2.43 (not a typo) for a brand spanking new book. What a bargain! Wait, wonder if that include shipping, let me check. Don't take it personal, has nothing to do with your book, your looks, and so on. Figure it out.

  29. I admire Christine Craft and always love when she subs at KGO. I think she was a role model of sorts to me when I heard about her law suit after she was fired.Outspoken women with brains are always called bitter or worse. For some reason they are usually called this by other women.I also like Stacy Taylor very much.Hope to hear more from both of them.

  30. I remember Christine Craft from the day she started at KEYT. I have always admired smart women and clearly Christine Craft was above all the other anchors, not just at KEYT; but LA TV too.

Christine Craft is the gold standard I judge all other TV anchors and radio people by.

I don't care what Christine Craft looks like; I care about what Christine Craft knows and how she communicates it.

PS: Ronald Reagan was a big fan too!
