The insignificance of local TV morning shows; CSNBA's Papa and Reiss hostility; Radnich not on 49ers PG show; Random media thoughts; Thursday round-up

*Is it not ever more apparent about the insignificance of the local TV morning show? OK, on a national basis, NBC's "Today Show" still has relevance even though its taped programming to the West Coast is useless, save for the occasional top interview like a celebrity or Dick Cheney talking about his new book, for example. But that's the exception.

Locally, the morning news offerings are largely filled with fluff and are useless. KTVU's "Mornings on Two" is the best, but outside of the occasional fire or three-car pile-up on 880, most of MO2 is repeat stories, traffic, (I still like ya, Sal Castaneda), and weather updates. At least KTVU does this right, but after that, where's the beef?

*The Greg Papa Chronicles: Papa and Scott, "I want to be Jim Nantz real bad" Reiss are reportedly feuding in and around the studios of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area. Papa has shelved hosting "Chronicle Live", (which has zero ratings unless following a Giants game), in favor of hosting more post-game baseball. That move has seen far less appearances for Reiss, (which means the make-up dept. at CC is lonely.)

Reiss' ego is almost bigger than Papa and people in and around the Comcast compound on 3rd street are put off by his arrogance, (my question? Who cares about Reiss?--he's barely mediocre and has all the authenticity of an IHOP in Modesto).

Meanwhile, Gary Radnich, still kinuddling on Knibber, will not be doing the post-game 49ers show. Comcast has chosen Dave Benz and Dwight Clark for those duties. Guess the Willie Brown experiment didn't quite cut the mustard. Thank goodness. Dave Benz? Yeah, that'll "move the meter." At least Dwight Clark might get the cablers some female demos.

RANDOM MEDIA NOTES: Hey, KRON, your trolls trying to infiltrate my site make for mild amusement, but they mostly lack in creativity and basic English, but thanks for trying...Matt Morrison, formerly of Comcast Sports gets shown the door, but little Rudy, Giggles Bobby Fitzgerald at KNBR is still working, (and you wanna know why this business is the shits?)...Memo to 95.7 FM PD, Jason Barrett, it's sort of unbecoming to boast in the press box about how great your "talent" can tweet and "social network." Even the youngsters LOLed that one...Speaking of the FM outlet, only Matt Steinmetz stands out in an otherwise pool of mostly innocuous nothings whose idea of "insight" amounts to nothing more than press release handouts. Barrett, hope you didn't buy a house yet here, and keep that resume updated...KUSF Update: Who the fuck cares?...Gotta love KGO still running the FALSE "0: 3" promos over and over. Good way to retain your listeners. And Mike Amatori has begun to get some listener and industry comeuppance with his ludicrous and inane promos that have all the warmth of Dan Rather taking a #2 at the NY deli...Hello, PIX PM anchor, Liz Cook? "Nevada City" is non-existent, (in Nevada, anyway, it's in CA.)--it's "Carson City", dearest, where the gunman went off the deep end, (always good to edit even the teleprompter), but keep 'em coming....This week in the "East Bay Express" and "Bay Guardian", only 7000 cannabis ads...Nice to hear Knibber's Kate Scott doing the CAL football pg-show on KGO last Saturday night. Then again, KGO peeps probably don't know or give a shit who Kate Scott is and Knibber's Cumulitis mentality is, "hey, she rocks." Call it a push....Class act in a shit-filled forest: Mindi Bach. She's hard-working, knows her stuff and looks and acts like a professional...Darya Folsom Update: They're both doing fine...Brandon Tierney Update: Your shit doesn't stink any better than anyone else. And if you're gonna boast, big boy, do it the right way. My bet is you'll be in Des Moines working at KPTZ from Midnight-6 in about a year.

NEWS NOTE: KGO/ABC7 expands its weekend news show to an hour beginning Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Hey Rich, you are correct the anchor blew it when she referred to Nevada City. So did you when you said there's no Nevada City. There is, its just in California.

  2. Does your blog got a bug? whats going on that I type an answer-and half the time,it gets erased when I hit "post"?

  3. In the hallways of Comcast, Reiss has been heard to say, "I was in Bristol, and this is how it should be done."
To pacify him losing time on the Giants pre/post shows, he was given the play-by-play gig for Stanford vs San Jose St. With gems like - "Well Andrew Luck will need more luck this series." or "Stanford draws second blood." He can't even get cliches correct.

  4. That's so wierd about KGO's hour newscast...not that they're expanding to an hour but that they're expanding to an hour at 11pm!

  5. Speaking of weird-Pecon did a hissy fit on the dysfunctional Raddy show today. He's a ticking time bomb. And those celebrity(including the local and minor-lol) lists of who's next?...

And THANKS to the people of this blog for telling me about 103.7FM-,had it cranked at 6am on the road for the Byrds and the Beatles.

  6. Hey 10:19, there is a technical problem with posting a comment *if* you're using Firefox. Comments posted with Firefox do disappear, as if clicking on either the Preview or Post Comment buttons causes a page reset. (Blogspot has this documented on their help page.) They have suggested that this happens because you have third-party cookies disabled, and enabling them will fix the problem, though I haven't tested it yet. Posting a comment with a different browser -- I post with Safari -- seems to work consistently.

Considering that I've complained to Mr. Media about this in the past, and I know others have too, it would've been nice if Rich had taken the time to do the research himself. Isn't that one aspect of ... (wait for it) ... journalism?

  7. Rich, Cook is a newbie who doesn't know where anything is let alone saying it right! Just hope when she does a live shot from Concord she doesn't get it confused with Clayton like some KTVU reporters do! DOH!

  8. Thanks 12;12. I also suspect that the occasional hard drive whine I only get here has to do with Blogspot hardware.
I know now-hear that, know the page will reload on any click to post or select. Wait until it stops..is safe.

  9. Of course Radnich got pulled from Niners post game. They require that you actually have to watch the game. Nothing screams the excitement of NFL football than having 2/3 of your post game carrying AARP cards!

Reiss who? Right now, I got him mixed up with one or two other guys. How about "Generic bland white guy not from this market"? And yes, MORE Mindi Bach please!!

Sure, Tierney's poop stinks like the rest of us. But he looks like he can kick your ass, Rich. And even if it is Iowa, it is still work in the industry.

Thanks for the Darya update. With sweeps coming up, time for some tighter tops and lower temps in the KRON news room.

  10. I just noticed you tagged your post as the 'only daily...', that means I do not want to read about you taking a day off or go a day without a post. I am holding it to you. Just like I would like to hold Darya on KRON.

  11. 11:25; damn, I missed it, I was on a business call. What happened with P.Conn?

  12. Elizabeth Cook is what happens when a little spoiled rich girl makes her daddy call his buddies and get her a job she doesn't deserve in a market that doesn't want her.

  13. Agree with the above posts.
The 49ers know better than to keep Radnich.
There is no room for Hollywood gossip on an NFL postgame show.
Give me someone who understands football or at least tries to sound half-way interested.

  14. Couldn't agree with you more about Mindi. She's come a long way since her days as a fill-in at KGO and KPIX. She may be one of the best things that Comcast Sportsnet has gonig. It would have been nice if Comcast Sportsnet had hired a few other local faces, but I heard the news director there said he didn't want any bay area 'retreads' as he put it. (i.e. people with experience in the bay area who actually know and had covered bay area sports).

Meanwhile, Kate Scott and 'p-con' are lucky to have jobs. If the company that owned KNBR was still running that place instead of a certain bloodless mega-media company from Atlanta, neither of them would probably have ever been allowed near a KNBR microphone.

As far as KRON goes, they don't even count anymore and are nothing but a joke. About the only thing worth watching on their news are Pam Moore and Vernon Glenn, survivors of a sad-sack management that seems determined to run a once respectable station into the ground by hiring neophytes and airheads.

  15. Pecon was in a tiff over Romo leaving the Giants to see the birth of his son. "Its the wussyness of America" he grunted then threw the mike. a slap and stomped off-no smile. No,Pecon has no wife or kids. But,he thinks he knows life as a ex marine who loves to drink and smoke.
I should report that Kate Scott was miffed that Radnich wanted her to joke about a hot blond-Kate- giving Radnich a spank. "I will not talk about spanking you,Gary" she said..while wishing Damon had won no doubt.
Raddys wife is a really fast texter...Kate barely finished when she read his wife's message for Radnich to cut out that talk-now...
    Such a dysfunctional show.

  16. Dysfunction is a good word to describe KNBR. Listen to that station and you can hear all manners of it, from Pee-Con and Raddy to the Giggler and his angry sidekick, from the morning news and traffic gal who has that annoying 'I'm so cool' voice, to that former A's player who tries to sound like Jim Rome and is always giving long, pregnant pauses in between screaming diatribes, to the morning frat-boys to the old Ralph-a-roo. The only talent in that building worth listening to: Tolbert, Damon Bruce, Ray Woodson, and Marty Lurie, but KNBR management marginalizes all of them (except Tolbert) by only throwing bones in their direction; weekends, backup slots, or 'Radio Siberia' (better known as am 1050). The rest of the place...a total waste of time. Unfortunately this is what local sportstalk radio has become. Perhaps that new FM sports station will finally give this big, fat lazy operation that calls itself 'the Sports Leader' some competition.
