Will Bruno show be shelved on KNBR? KQED Radio gets love from BFT; Monday media mush

Will Tony Bruno's nationally syndicated show, (Fox Sports Radio), still be on KNBR 1050 Monday night? Probably, but things could change.

Bruno's "illegal alien" forklemnpta against the Giants' Ramon Ramirez, while getting a lot of pub here, (and rightly so), was essentially a non-story elsewhere. Although Bruno was quick to apologize for his remarks, he was also demonstrably defiant and still ripped into Giants' fans and stuck to his "coward" remark about Bruce Bochy.

My guess is Bruno, who is NOT a racist, will get a short suspension, (if any); I would doubt he'll get fired because his show gets decent ratings, and up until Friday night, did reasonably well in the Bay Area. Part of that has to do with his Radnich segment that was booted before the Ramirez incident.

The irony here is that Bruno's momentary lapse could actually give the sagging 1050, (knibber's little sister of the poor)  a temporary jolt. As of now, there's no official word from the 55 Hawthorne boys. Ultimately, I think Bruno survives, but I'm not surprised if he gets the heave-ho. After all, it's radio.

*That was a lot of love shown for KQED-FM radio by Ben Fong-Torres in Sunday's pinkie. Sure, KQED has some quality programming and is beloved by the Volvo/Nordstrom demo, but public radio is never going to be a game changer in this market, hell, any market, until it begins running full-fledged commercial spots and that ain't gonna happen anytime soon.

*Local TV news industry question that keeps getting asked: "What the hell is going on at NBC11?" Beats me. They're going full throttle mode on Janelle Wang as the PM news savior and while Wang is OK, I'm not sure she has the cachet to change the dynamic at 6 PM.

I thought Tom Sinkovitz was doing OK right there, but what do I know? Is it considered taboo that every newscast MUST have a woman and a guy? Two guys? Bad. Two women? Never. And don't forget that you MUST have diversity. Before I get a slew of e-mail from the diversity police, don't go there. I'm about as white as Oprah. (There's a joke there, I think).

*More annoying radio ads: The ubiquitous and overly-obnoxious Chase ad with the "keep on..." moronic jingle. This crap wouldn't be all that bad if they didn't play it every other minute.

*KCBS memo: guys, the relentless story repeat is beginning to become tiresome. Heard Doug Sovern's story about local businesses splitting about 4x in two hours Monday morning. And I like Sovern. It's just that when you hear the SAME story over and over, it gets to be a drag. And on the weekend, only worse.

How about a simple thing called re-writing the original story? What a genius.

*Add Bruno: Giants Mgr., Bruce Bochy calling Bruno a racist. Bochy admitted he never heard of Bruno which is good because Bruno isn't a racist, maybe momentary idiot, but "racist?" No. Bochy utilizing the race card, interesting, but sort of lazy.

*By the way dept: In 2005, then Giants skipper, Felipe Alou goes berserk over Knibber host, Larry Kruegar's "Caribbean slop" remark. Kruegar gets canned, along with PD, Bob Agnew. Station producer, Tony Rhein, plays dumb song that re-ignited incident. Gets fired himself.

Today, both Rhein and Kruegar are back at KNBR. Go figure.

*Redwood City is hardly Simi Valley, my bad, but it ain't Newark either, so I'll stick by my analogy.

  1. KNBR would be wise to NOT cancel the evening Bruno show currently on 1050. It is a good sports alternative to the boring Ray Woodson.

Would 95.7 FM pick up Bruno if KNBR lets him go? That alone could keep the Bruno show on KNBR.

  2. Your statment on anchor pairs is totally off base. You state two women NEVER anchor together. WRONG, Mr. Media. KRON 4 once had two females anchor the news, Pam Moore and Wendy Tokuda were paired together. And right now Pam Moore solos the news. You do not have to have a man and woman behind the anchor desk, although it is the norm. What you need is solid content. I do not think NBC11 or KRON fill that void, though. KRON is news of the obvious. NBC11 does a solid job but still fights the perception of being a South Bay/Monterey station. I will take KRON over NBC11 anyday.

  3. Bochy did not call Bruno a racist. He said the comment was racist. That are two, very different things.

  4. La Azteca for killer burritos, the loading zone for happy hour....climate best by government test...Redwood City rocks!

  5. Lee Hammer and Lew Dickey..and the other guy are racist is what I figure. Rehiring those two as if there are no other candidates is rubbing it in the face of the bay area.
Its KNBR,where they feed off there own-Plummer and Dibbs kids-when they are gone and done dirty...but open arms to those who are racists and welcomed back. No morals in charge will act like that. Oh,and that's why nothing will be done to Bruno. He was dropped from the Raddy show because Damon Bruce needs that time.

  6. Radnich should be defending Bruno more and friend of the show D.O. called him out on it.

  7. Enough of this nonsense about a non-story! Who cares what Tony Bruno said on his show! It shouldn't be an issue and is not even interesting. Those who feel slighted or are overly-sensitve...get over it!
In the greater scheme of things, it's a minor footnote for one day here in the bay area.

Of more interest: My big question is why a backstabbing little putz like Bobby Fitz is still on the air? You think some of this guy's bad karma would have finally come back to bite him in the you-know-where. He must have pictures of Lou Dickey and Lee Hammer in uncompromising positions! I'm amazed that he's survived this long!

  8. Why don't you just call this blog "KNBR Unofficial News?"

BTW - two female anchors worked quite well in San Diego during the 90's with Carol LeBeau and Kimberly Hunt.

  9. Giants Mgr.Bruce Bochy calling Bruno a racist...Bochy utilizing the race card, interesting, but sort of lazy....
Bocy's actual comment - " For a guy to make a racist comment like that and have the ear of so many people, that bothers me."
Hey Rich, who is really the "lazy" one here?

  10. Repeat stories? Sounds like money talks too much again. Even KCBS has to pinch pennies every now and then. Repeat stories prove that. Unfortunate, but obvious.

  11. You just start listening to KCBS? They've been repeating stories for as long as I've listened. That was one of the reasons KGO was ahead of them all those years. Now that KGO has crapped their pants and is in free-fall and KCBS is #1, why should they change?

  12. I am glad you keep this blog free. Janelle Wang appears on NBC Bay Area news again and I wanted to find out what's going on. And of course you had a brief mention in this post. Where's Janelle Wang from? Channel 7? Her name sounds familiar. She has been anchoring the 11pm news as well as the 6pm news. What's going on? I am not sure whether she is good at the anchor chair either. Please keep us posted, Mr. Insider! Thanks!

  13. TV stations must have diversity? Have you looked at KTVU's main anchor line up of Frank and Julie.. or KGO's Ashley and Johnson or Ashley and Jennings? What diversity..
