Greg Papa is all but done hosting CSNBA's nightly sports cable show, "Chronicle Live", according to multiple sources close to the situation.
A Comcast spokesperson told me that Papa hadn't left the show. A source told me that "he's going to do a few more shows but for the most part, he's done with it."
Last week, I had reported that Papa, who has hosted the show since its inception in April, 2009, expressed a desire to leave the program and do more Giants' programming, including both pre and post-game shows.
It has been known in industry circles that Papa was tired of the studio interview format and wanted more of a presence doing Giants and Raiders content. He will continue to do radio PBP for the Raiders.
No permanent host has been named, but those substituting of late include Jim Kozimor, Barry Tompkins, Gary Radnich and Jaymee Sire.
You can bet Radnich is going to try to steal that money, too.
ReplyDeletePlease no Barry "whitewash" Tompkins,no Gary "I'M the show" Radnich, and no "I'm a little girl" Sire.
ReplyDeleteThat leaves one on the list whos listenable.
That would only happen if the KRON money dries up, he collects there pretty nicely
ReplyDeleteGreg said last night that he's done with the show and is looking forward to doing more Giants pre and post game shows.
ReplyDeleteThe Comcast people may not want to admit it, but Greg was getting burnt out (as you said Rich). . He'll have an enjoyable time as the main Giants' pre and post game show host. I think doing a show like Chronicle Live just begins to take its toll and wear you down if you have to do it for over two years, as Papa did.
Plus, unfortunately the ratings weren't very good, mainly because th show is locked into a time slot where most people are still in their cars coming home from work. Why Comcast doesn't have it later in the day, say at 6pm as a good lead in to the Giants, I don't know, but that's their call.
After a year or so, the novelty of that kind of a show also begins to wear off. But it will be hard to get someone to do half as good a job as Papa, who was terrific on that show, as he is in everything he does on the air. Papa is so much better than anyone else Comcast has, that the comparison between him and the rest of that staff is like comparing a Bob Costas with an everage
sportscaster from a place like Fresno.
Comcast at 5 was Papa's best chance I would think to prove himself as more than just a Raider apologist...and he did far more than that showing he was knowedgable, witty, and a great host.
ReplyDeleteYou just can't make people do what they are best at I guess.
Maybe Papa can host a show on 95.7 and save it.
ReplyDeleteThat station is awful, especially the 2-6pm show. I don't think Rich has told us his opinion of the station since it changed its schedule Monday. It feels like KNBR FM. It's that bad.
He should go back to calling A's games and kick that retarded, nepotism-benefitting, piece of shit, Glen Kuiper to the curb.
ReplyDeleteGlen Kuiper is a professional and human piece of shit (too bad his little, blond, young wife is an idiot).
Asa far as 95.7 goes..until they get it in their heads to add bay area diversity the "Montes" and the like will keep the revolving door effect going.
ReplyDeleteThe arise and shine show in the mornings is ok. Dibs and Whitey-who sounds so much like a Mike Cleary/Frank Dill throwback are keepers..the other guy is generic. Toss him and and add a diverse person of color to do color you might say.
The first time I heard Monty I posted here-FIRE HIM!..and thus it came to be. 95.7 should listen to me. I know.

I dont know what I expected but:
ReplyDeleteRadnich & Damon Bruce=UNLISTENABLE esp when they both try to bring Kate Scott into their frat boy circle...
Damon's VOICE is too loud...
Damon almost starts or ends every sentence with "Ya know Gary..."
Rod Brooks:When did he STUTTER so much. Brooks and Larry Kruegar=UNLISTENABLE.
95.7=the COMMERCIALS are kind of boorish.
John Lund (whomever that is) might be the worst, most condescending on air host I have ever heard:
Lund and Urban=TERRIBLE
Lund and Papa=TERRIBLE
What is happening? Was this a sneak attack on Lee Hammer or did HE and KNBR know that this was on the horizon?
I think we should all give Papa a round of applause for a good two years work. And that he quit without sounding like he burnt out or mailed it in right to the last show is a testimonial to Greg's talent.
ReplyDeletesigned,
the masked S..again!
Btw,I was the one who posted about 3-4 weeks ago here on R.L's 415 Super Media, "Things were going to change,I could feel it in the air"...and oh boy,was I right!
ReplyDeletethe masked "S"...
I'm thinking too-maybe Papa was tired of being told what he can or cant say on a "talk" show? After all, last season when Lacob insulted Warrior fans...Comcast sports never mentioned it. Ignored what was on the front of every sports page. Even now-no mention of Bruno on their website. Really,Papa is still wanting to do sports talk..not just for Comcast at 5.
ReplyDeleteAnd Greg did once joke "We are what they( tv execs) tell us to be"..And then there was the Tim Kawakami incident-he claimed thet COM@5 producers told him to not mention Warrior brass on air.
I could be wrong-but most likely Im right.
You're right about Glen Kuiper. He's a a shill for A's and a weak one at that. Yes, nepotism probably got him his job with Comcast (he always ended up at KNBR a few years back, but then PD Bob Agnew said: "..just because he's a Kuiper doesn't mean he's entitled to an on-air job!" and he had the balls not to hire him.
ReplyDeleteOf course, at least Kuiper didn't knife anyone in the back to move up in the world as Bob Fitzgerald did. Before Fitz earned his much deserved rep as a sleaze-bag, he perfected the art of backstabbing by stealing a job away from John Shrader. Shrader was doing rinkside and between the period spots on the Sharks' broadcasts on what was then called "Fox Sportsnet Bay Area" back in 1993. Fitz, who must have learned the fine art of brown-nosing and ass-kissing when he was matriculating at Notre Dame, sidled up to a particularly sleazy front office guy (the Sharks have fortunately had very few of these guys...)
and this fellow...Matt Levine, was convinced by Fitz to dump Shrade and bring in Fitz for the following season. At the time, Fitz had an in with the Sharks as he was selling corporate seating at the Tank. Dealing with fast talking and sometimes unethical executives also probably
honed Fitz's now legendary sleazy-ball behavior.
