Papa wants out of "Chronicle Live"

As the sports radio topic heats up, now comes this word: fed up with viewer-lagging, "Chronicle Live", main host, Greg Papa is tired of the gig and wants to do more Giants' pre and post-game live programs.

Papa, who continues to do the Raiders pbp duties, has already told Comcast Bay Area brass that he's tired of the "Chron Live" gig.  If you've noticed that there's been a heavy dose of Barry Tomkins, Jim Kozimoor and even Gary Radnich filling in on, "CL", there's a reason, (Kozimoor is hosting Monday night).

Papa's interest is Scott Reiss' loss: already Reiss, the lead Giants pre and pg host supposedly is miffed at his about-to-be diminished gig. (Maybe he can become an Insider.)

  1. Papa is the driving source of that show..his knowledge and sense of humor is all over Tompkins who is strictly a time killer...Barry is status quo, don't rock the boat and of course quick to criticize even the greatest Latin players-he called Juan Marichal a "lazy" pitcher. It's common in the local media to do that with latin baseball players. And then of course Barry's biggest claim to fame is he cost Stanford running back Toby Gerhard the Heisman trophy. Barry voted for gimpy armed Colt McCoy of... Texas??
To say Barrys crowd is Scott Ostler and Bruce Jenkens is an understatement.
Without Papa,Comcast at 5 will soon be an infomercial and propaganda outlet for the local teams owners-all of them.

  2. The show, quite frankly, only works with Papa. Barry Tompkins is a distant second, and the other hosts are worthless.

  4. JMHO Papa isn't very good on an interview show. Talks or screams over whoever he's interviewing, causing listener to miss it when someone actually says something (which on ChronLive ain't often). PBP is his strength, he's damn good at it.

  6. People may not like how he does his daily radio show but Radnich is one of the best when it comes to doing a 1 on 1... This goes for TV or radio.

  7. Disappointed to find out Barry Tompkins won't be calling Pac10/12 games this year. The guy has been doing conference games since it was the Pac 8.

  8. Say it isn't so Barry. We used to count the numerous times he would set a play from scrimmage with, "Trips right".
He also one of the only broadcasters to be ripped by Rudy Martzke, USA Today sports media critic from 1982-2005. Martzke was so vanilla, he never critiziced anyone.
Tompkins was working the week-end news desk for NBC Sports. When reading the final scores from early French Open tennis matches he said, "Now how about this funny sounding name." He would then butcher the foreign athlete's name and laugh. This happened for a full segment and he was called out for it. Never worked for NBC again.

  9. Papa is doing guest host on 95.7. He makes the 95.7 host seem like Chris Farley's interviewer character in comparison to Papa's cool and funny. Papa is at his peak,Comcast is going to let a huge talent walk away?

  10. Papa is owning 95.7 today. This is what happens when you bring in hosts from out of town, who don't know the scene, or who try and bring their own predisposed notions about the local teams. Look at the banter from A's fans on thier FB page, they are not happy.

  11. This is a shame. I have always enjoyed Papa's style, he clearly does his homework and is not afraid to speak his mind even when his opinion is counter to the station's, team owner's, etc. Personally, I've been disappointed in the show's direction too. It's become more of a variety hour with segments given to people who are, at best, tangentally related to sports and who want to promote their latest book, movie, comedy club appearance, whatever. Stick to sports talk with knowledgeable local columnists and a moderator, like Papa, with the brains to guide it.

And FWIW, Radnich is horrible. I understand his schtick and it's mildly entertaining that he's the guy who's too cool to care or root for any teams or be in any way invested in the sports scene. But he's taken it too far in that he clearly makes no effort to do his homework, keep up to date with the local teams, etc. I'll bet you my bottom dollar he couldn't name more than two pitchers in the A's or Giants bullpen, for example. He truly does not care and his quality of work/effort shows it.
