Local TV's coverage of the Candlestick Apocalypse; The Usual Crap, but Remarkable Restraint too

Repeated shots of the fans, (hooligans actually), shoving their fists at one another Saturday night at Candlestick, was the predictable by-product of the Bay Area local TV news.

After the lead of the early-evening, (6: 30 PM) news package, KPIX/CBS 5 anchor, Ann Notarangelo, (who is good and should know better), ad-libbed "if you want to see more of the scenes, you can go the CBS5 website." Gees, thanks Ann.

KTVU and KGO also, (naturally), lead with the Raiders/49ers Candlestick hijinks, but were remarkably restrained and used a seldom-practiced guide in these types of stories: common sense. Hallelujah.

NBC Bay Area also went hot and heavy with the mayhem, but also showed a much-needed bit of deference.

Perhaps the lamest "bit" of the sidebar story goes back to KPIX, which chose to do the proverbial after-day interview of casual fans who said perhaps, "things can get out of hand." No shit, Sherlock.

About as predictable and annoying as the neighbor who tells reporter that the guy who killed 12 people was "a very quiet man--he didn't talk much." (How many times have you seen that?)

It's quite unfortunate that a few liquored-up lunatics donning silver and black jackets and red and gold jerseys can quite literally provide for the top story of the day and night. Perhaps about 50-60, ok a few hundred, tops, out of a crowd of about 50,000.

This is not a chamber of commerce plug for the respective football teams and their security; its just that these types of events seem to have taken on a life of their own. Yes, two men were beaten and one poor soul was shot. Crazy shit.

But.

I wish local TV moved the camera away. We didn't need the endless bloody jersey boys. That might quash future highlights of the lunatic fringe in action.

  3. When you have ticket brokers like Stub Hub selling tickets for 15 bucks you're gonna get every gang banger and trouble maker in the Bay Area to show up and start shit. The season ticket holders are smarter than that and most of them stay home, thats why you get this crap. You don't hear the media commenting about that now do you..

  5. I was at the game and was alarmed by the number of gang banger types who were acting intimidating toward anyone who even gave them a casual look. Where did all of these nasty types come from anyway? One guy was wearing a black tea shirt that said "Fu...the 49ers." Real bright! No wonder these cretins were getting into fights. Between the booze, the testosterone and the dysfunctional behavior of young men who are not very very well educated, probably have crappy jobs (if they have any job) and are mad at the world, you've got a formula for trouble!

  6. If you think it's just a few causing the trouble, perhaps you should attend a game now and then. Interesting in the comments on Kawakami's blog, a detective details how he feared for his family's safety at a Niners game. It's out of control, and it's not just a few.
