49ers-Raiders fan violence at Candlestick Park gets extensive coverage on National Media

The violence, (two separate after-game shootings and fights) at Candlestick Park Saturday evening involving Raiders and 49ers fans received unusually large media play from the national media, both sports and news.

While local TV showed numerous cell-phone camera footage of an in-game fan fight, and had reporters stationed for live shots on the Sunday after, (KTVU's 'Weekend Mornings on Two' had a reporter at Candlestick), almost all national radio outlets, ESPN Radio in particular, lead with the story.

Both ABC Radio and CBS Radio, (KGO, KCBS network news affs) reported on the Candlestick mayhem.

ESPN Radio's John Stashower and Mark Sherlereth devoted several segments on the incident(s) Sunday morning. Sherlereth indicated, while acknowledging he didn't know all the details that "the Raiders fans are known for bringing out the worst in fan behavior." (Nice objectivity from a former Denver Bronco player)

The violence is sure to get extensive heavy play on the local talk shows come Monday, particularly on the heels of Bryan Stow tragedy at Dodger Stadium last March.

  1. Ignorant fools plus heavy alcohol intake = yesterday's mayhem. Unbelievable!

  3. Not saying Raider fans are a problem (I've seen a lot firsthand), but most of the SF Chron's newspaper blog comments were talking about the new breed of 49er fan being young, violent and many older season-ticket holders are not renewing becasue of it. One of Radnich's good sports opinions has been "there are trouble-makers in every stadium" which I do believe. PS-Save the hater remarks Schleirith!

  4. I was walking into the stadium last night and was alarmed at how many young men and even some young women were drinking beer and wine and hard booze before entering the park. Most were loud and used abusive language, and glared at you if you happened to disapprove of their behavior. I heard one cretin bark at an older gentleman who was with his two sons: "What are you looking at fool!" as if he were spoiling for a fight. No wonder there is fan violence. Perhaps the city should ban liquor anywhere within a mile of the park before the game. 11am is right about the typical forty niner fan now being young, violent, and angry. Walk into a Niner or Raider game these days and all you see are these young gang-banger types who want to get drunk and then duke it out in the stands. Thank god they pat down these fools because the next thing you know they'd probably be blasting away at each other with their guns.
Niner fans are just as bad if not worse than Raider fans, and it's sad because many folks who are not gang banger types and who prefer not to get roaring drunk before the games in the parking lot are now being driven away by these cretins. Who wants to take one's wife or kids to the game
when you have to listen to these annoying loud mouth brainless twits yelling "NINERS!" or "RAIDERS!" or other obnoxious sayings throughout the game. I don't think these guys even like football, they're just looking for a place to make trouble and noise.
They should all be kicked out of the stadium and thrown in the drunk tank! I was watching last night's big brawl in the lower stands and it went on for quite awhile before the cops finally broke it up. Next time the cops should take those fools, put em in a cell and let em punch each other out between each other until they're too badly beaten up or tired to hit each other anymore. Then take em to court, fine em and throw up in jail for a week or two, and never...NEVER allow them to attend another NFL game in the bay area. Teams don't need their patronage or their money. It's not worth it! Unfortunately, about the only thing these maniacs respond to seems to be violence as most of them probably come from homes where the parents were either absent or drunk, or abusive.
Why they have to end up soiling our sports events
here in the bay area with their nonsense is beyond me. They're human DRECK!

  5. 49er fans were responsible for most of the violence, yet Raider fans take the rap. Typical.

  6. Jesus your right bro "WTF" its not like these baboso's are getting paid for it come on and if you're RaZA geezs get it together or if you like going to jail so be it ignorant or just plain whatever GoD doesn't approve..

  7. They could ban alcohol on the premises. It would solve just about all the problems.
Jed and Al are safe in the boxes..so that idea wont go anywhere.
One day..it will be like cigarettes..and people will wonder why they ever thought allowing mean drunks,or good drunks who then get behind the wheel after the game, was good for sports.

  8. It was a meaningless game as far as the regular SF season ticket holders were concerned. The majority rather 'ate' their tickets or were selling them on Craig's List or Stubhub for next to nothing. Those folks causing the trouble are not the typical fan. Instead they were folks who jumped at the opportunity to attend a game that they are normally priced out of. The classless 'in your face' BS by fans (one guy who got shot porportadely wore a "FUCK the NINERS" t-shirt) shouldn't get by stadium security.

  9. as reported by Gwen Knapp -
A man wearing a "F- the 49ers" T-shirt was shot outside Candlestick Park shortly after the end of Saturday night's preseason game.....
Police detained a suspect shortly after the shooting - a man wearing Raiders apparel who was found on a party bus in an RV section of the parking lot... Raider on Raider crime???

  10. 12:27: The shooter was wearing Raider apparel and he shot a man wearing a "fuck the 49ers" shirt. Raiders fans are as ignorant as you are violent.

  11. I have been a raiders season tiket holder for the last seven years, I agree that the voilence last night is un acceptable, however, my experience at the raider games is that most of the security are oakland police officers who do not take voilence at the games lightly, fans know this, and are, in my opinion less likely to fight at the raider games. If there is to be less voilence at the games, then the niners should step up the security at the games so fans from other teams can attend, also in Oakland they have been preaching alot about code of fan conduct, and making the game day experience enjoyable for all fans, I think that when fans know there is really no consequences for actions at the game they will be more inclined to be voilent, Go Raiders!

  12. If Amy Trask put as much effort into security as she did coming up with a way to exploit the Raiders common folk employee's during the possible lockout that was looming..ohhh,but wait, that was a way to SAVE the team's money problems. Fans shooting each other? well, her and Jedadiah across the bay have no plans for that.

  13. @3:12 There were TWO shootings and countless beatings, look at the videos online, almost all were 49er fans ganging up on Raider fans. Stop living with your idiot generalizing and open your eyes. As for the guy in question, he wasn't arrested.

  14. Anyone consider suicide attempt? Cmon, his team just gave up 17 points to the horrible 49ers while only scoring 3 themselves.

  15. Add fire to fire, you get fire. And it doesn't matter what team you root for or what shirt you're wearing.

  16. I sat on row 15 with my 11 year old son and didn't enjoy the game. I had to constatly move over because of these thugs a raider fan in front of me and a 49er fan behind me, but know if i said anything it will just make the matter worse. This is my son's first football game and he had told me he won't be going to a game for a while. The very few descent people that have season tickets should just get a refund because its not worth it!

  17. 49ers Colors are RED = NORTENOS GANG COLORS...

Raiders Colors are BLACK = SORTENOS GANG COLORS... This was about Gang Warfare Plain & Simple!

  18. KRON continues to be amateur 'journalists'. They're on it like flies on shit...pathetic!

  19. I completely agree about banning alcohol in the parking lots. May be a big hit but it'll bring back educated people to the stadium and just enjoy the game without having to fear your own safety. I'm not saying educated folks wont act the same way...but it's clear the lack of intelligence mixed with alcohol is worse!

  20. Why doesn't the CHP have a sobriety check point after games?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Pro football games have kept spiraling downwards to less and less of a family atmosphere. This is not just a Raiders/Niners issue...it's nationwide.
It's real sad when decent fans cannot be safe when trying to watch a sporting event in order to escape from their daily lives.
Just watch/enjoy the game & leave all of your personal issues/problems at home.

  22. And teams like the raiders charge you 35$$ to park int thier lots

  23. Could've been worse......the game could've been played in Oakland!!!!!!!!
