Bruce rattled a few (Giants) feathers and other reasons as to why he's gone; Analysis

The early consensus why Damon Bruce is no longer on the 9-Noon KNBR 680 slot: Analysis

*Bruce, although talented and sports knowledgeable, (he knows his stuff), said too many provocative things for the station's sports client base, (Giants/49ers/Warriors). Sure, you can tell it like it is, but you have to build up a lengthy tenure locally and have the audience back you. You also have to build up credibility and possess cachet. Bruce was probably spot on on most of his rants, but hasn't been here long enough to establish a lot of listener/client cred.

*When you build up some momentum and land a choice gig, you also have to show a little tact. Bruce' ego and press-box behavior, (arrogance) drove many people, (the ones who count too), the wrong way. That may be utter crap, but its the truth.

*The Radnich factor: I don't think GR went out and behind the scenes and tried to get rid of Bruce. Gary used to have a lot of power, (mostly under ex-PD, Tony Salvadore), but no longer. He does have some juice with upper mgt. suits and he may have barked a little louder on this situation.

*The Show. Quite frankly, the Radnich-Bruce pairing, (which debuted Aug. 1) was bad and awkward from the beginning. Both Bruce and Radnich hurt each other's cause. It was unsettling to hear over the air and frankly, bad radio. In fact, this sordid circus, (a Lee Hammer production), could end up costing someone their job.

Finally, and this is the touchy part: Bruce' public behavior may have gottem him into hot water. It's well known and seen, (like at AT&T Park last night) that Bruce likes to have a good time. That may have been the last straw.

  1. Could you elaborate on the last paragraph? I know he's talked about mouthing off at Astros players while not wearing a credential, but it seems other folks have noticed it, from the comments on one of the sites I've read today.

  2. Wow, they made a good decision!
Now the question is do I keep listening to 95.7 or switch back to knbr. I was listening to John Lund and Greg Papa today. No one at 680 can touch that.
So the rule is you can be an a$$ as long as you've been here a while? It's like teachers and tenure, right. f/u all you want because no one will fire you if you have "paid your dues" That's sorry.

  4. I think Raddy for sure went behind Bruce's back to have him replaced. Since Dibley left,Hammer has set him up with a Berkeley Lesbian and when Raddy couldn't stand her as his main sidekick, upper management came back with Bruce..something I doubt Raddy ever liked the idea of. Only if it boosted ratings is why he gave in. And when he got a taste of Damon for three hours a day everyday, couldn't stand that either.
What Raddy is going to find is that Kreuger is an unlikeable son of a bitch to his audience,so no gain. Tony Bruno..no doubt Radnich would like to bring him back as a slap in the face to Latins all over the bay area...Bruno and his illegal aliens crap paired with Kruegers brain dead Caribbean players racist remark. One of a few Larry let go back in 2005.
If any of those two had made the same mistake with African Americans-they would never be on KNBR-and Radnich wouldn't be so forgiving of Larry would he?. But when you listen to KNBR the anti Latin twist and their ignorance of Latin culture is stunningly obvious.
Somehow, they get away with it year after year. I can only hope the KNBR turmoil continues until something right is done.

  5. knbr is so beholden to the Giants that we never hear anything but the public line. Even the beat reporters are tamed. Bruce has the stones to break ranks, like Krueger. One other person has been critical of the G's lately, we'll see if they sanction him. At least the punishment was exile to 1050. Now that Urban is on 95.7 maybe he'll be more candid.

  6. Urban is just another nit wit who thinks his own farts don't smell. I never figured out how this second string baseball writer had gotten not one, not two, but now has gotten three different jobs on the local broadcast outlets doing sports. Amazing!

  7. Anyone of you posters know where that sorry-ass white boy punk who insulted me with his racist, right wing remarks went? That Rush Limbaugh lover never responded to my challenge. I still want to kick his little girl punk ass into the bay!

  8. Congrats to Larry Krueger, the best sports talk show host in the BA, although Lund is very strong. Nuts to you pc twits to pull the race card. Larry more than paid the price, and apologized, for his indiscretion - he was persecuted. if you never forgive you'll never be forgiven. furthermore knbr is a sports station. you can get your latino culture fix somewhere else. no one is going to talk about race in front of a microphone, it's death.
Larry is a class guy, a family man and will again pay his dues by putting up with radish. Then hopefully soon he'll get his own gig. He has more than earned it.

  9. Blow out Kate Scott and you will have interested listeners once again

  10. Kreuger THE BEST???? that's a hoot. And 450,Larry is the original race card player..ironic since he doesn't play with a full deck.
Family man? Since being hired he's been beating that drum..appealing to all, playing on them for sympathy. He's such a weasel.

  11. 100 agreed with the 4:50 PM post!

  12. It's fairly funny watching Kate Scott do the updates on the CSNCA simulcast; the way she strains to enunciate in a radio-form makes her look like a muppet.

  13. Gary, Larry and Tony should host the new morning show on "Desportes 860".

  14. There are enough pc wussies on the air that you can avoid Krueger offending your virgin ears. Perhaps kqed or "Green 960" is more to your liking. BTW who do you like or are you a disciple of Rich who hates every one? (although he has a man crush on Damon)

  15. What did you think would happen. Bruce proved beyond any reasonable doubt he didn't have the talent to carry a big time show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Uncle Gary certainly did still have enough pull on the 11th floor to make this happen.

Good to see Kreuger return after all the crap he went thru.

    Hammer continues to survive. Amazing.

  17. Uncle Gary is home. I will be calling in on my way to work. BYE BYE DAMON

  18. It just shows negative comments about the Giants and 49er even if they are valid will not be tolerated on the propaganda leader. Larry Baer does not want the failure of this season to be discussed it could hurt sales of Giraffe Hats and Beards.

I can't imagine in another large sports market where there is such a thin skinned team as the Giants.

  19. I was seriously going to take the time to write KNBR and complain about Bruce. His arguments were weak and his arrogance tremendous.

    ReplyDelete
  20. C'mon, this is hardly reporting. KNBR sent Bruce packing from the a.m. gig because the Giants were upset with him? And, KNBR replaced him with Larry Krueger, a guy the Giants organization literally did run out of town years back with untimely comments about a Giants' hitting slump having to do with free-swinging Latino hitters, thus angering players and manger Felipe Alou.

If the Giants wanted Bruce out, it's hard to believe they would be OK with Krueger. I think Krueger's a good broadcaster but him working with Radnich belies the notion that the Giants alone led to Bruce being sent packing.

Bruce is appealing to the demographic 95.7 is aiming for...and to land a guy who had an audience at KNBR would be a coup for The Game. So ... logic indicates that having bounced Bruce from his p.m. KNBR gig...to 1050...then bouncing him from an a.m. KNBR gig...means Bruce isn't long for KNBR.

Why tap dance around about "rumors" about Bruce's public persona being a problem? Unprofessional conduct in the press box has been reported ... and there's no room to party when you wearing a press credential.

  21. I'm not as critical as others here about Gary and others on KNBR but if we find out Gary was still in town and working to oust D-Bruce, what a little pussy!!! I like Larry but I might just be done with Radnich. I'll just hold out an hour and tune into Lund at 10am now.

And if Bruce is too critical for Baer, he should just run an hour of Jon Miller's Vince Scully Impressions or Kruk's "Blowing Rainbows Up Our Arse!" Hour. Grab some Pine, indeed!

  22. Jed York got him off knbr and I bet you it won't be long before he is taken off the 49ers after show. Damon showed he had no respect for Jed York when he was interviewed by Gary & Damon.

  23. How do you spell publicity stunt?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, Fitzgerald and Brooks can kiss their spike in ratings goodbye. It will back to crickets now that Bruce is solo opposite them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Too much drama. You can thank 95.7 for all of this.

I'd be more inclined to listen to 95.7 if they didn't spend all of their promo time ripping KNBR - they make me feel like I have to choose between one or the other when they should be lucky either of them get any of my divided attention.

I don't think 95.7 realizes how insulting it is when they bash KNBR to listeners who tune in to both stations.

  26. Gary stabbed Damon in the back.
Never thought he would do something like this.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with the previous posters Rich.
Elaborate on your last paragraph. Especially since this occured in a public setting.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Call me crazy, but I actually like Gary's show. Call me even crazier, but I even like Kate Scott. That being said, the show hasn't been the same since Dibley left. Bringing on Damon Bruce was the wrong way to go; I just don't think the audiences are compatible, and the egos between Radnich and Bruce are just too big for one show. The only way Larry Krueger is going to work on the show is if he plays the Dibley role. By that, I don't mean he has to disagree with everything Gary says for the sake of fun, but in the sense that Gary dictates the pace and content of the show. Larry's going to have play off Gary and assume the definitive junior role in the show, and will be interesting to see if he can or even wants to do that.

  29. Rumor is that Damon Bruce almost fought a patron during the 49ers post game show last week in Hmb at Sams and that Lee Hammer was there to see it all. He is a total baby! And the only reason it got out is that Bruce bragged about it!!
