New Rule: Anyone who ever mutters "...at the end of the day" has to watch old Oprah reruns.
Clearly, the over-usage of "At the end of the day" has reached epic proportions. Enough so to warrant calling the FBI word police. "Have a nice day" seems tranquil and Mary Poppins to this pathetic five words permeating the media landscape and as much out of control as that Arizona wild fire a few weeks back.
First it was politicians: "Wolf, the business of the country will still be priority1, but...'at the end of the day, we need to concentrate on...." YUCK.
Then professional athletes, some of whom couldn't string together a complete sentence if they're life depended on it, caught on to the phenomena: In his post-loss press conference, Miami Heat superstar, LeBron James uttered the dreaded, "At the end of the day" five, (5!) "at the end of the days." Too bad he couldn't make 5 jump shots.
"At the end of the day" is voiced ad nauseum by both Mikes on ESPN Radio's "Mike and Mike." (Mike) Greenberg is the most guilty there, but co-host (Mike,) Golic is an equal abuser.
In fact, just listen to almost all the "Mikes" on ESPN and you'll get a virtual smorgasbord of "At the end of the days", enough to really want you to leave the country.
ESPN isn't alone.
The Sunday talking-head shows...Face the Nation, Meet the Press, This Week is bound to emit a whole month's worth of "At the end of the day", (politicians go virtually orgasmic over this dreaded verbal conundrum because it sounds cool and makes them look ...well, like politicians.
I'm calling for a moratorium on all use of "At the end of the day." After all, at the end of the day, we'll, you get my point.

lets add "at this point" to the growing list of phrases im sick of. may they both go the way of (internet super-highway)
ReplyDeleteMr. Media..... Are you bored? This piece was......:(
ReplyDeleteAnd the same with "awesome".
ReplyDeleteYou are awesome.
That accident was awesome.
The flood that killed 1879 people was awesome.
That report was awesome.
That story was awesome.
This blog is awesome.
My ESPN pet peeve is when Berman says "mano y mano", when it should be "mano a mano". Jesus Chisto, you'd think someone at ESPN Desportes would have corrected him by now!
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day he's a professional hitter who's a great guy in the clubhouse after giving 110% of it is, what it is...
ReplyDeleteLook...
ReplyDeleteThe bottom line is...
Make no mistake, you are spot on.
ReplyDeleteAt the end of the day...I avoid "Same and Samer" on ESPN like the plague (even though it's better than the 680 or 95.7 offerings at the same time"). Ostler has a great piece today about the actual phrase abuser-"going forward".
ReplyDeleteAlso, over-usage of "epic" has reached epic proportions.
ReplyDeleteHow about your misuse of "they're" when it should be "their"? Those types of grammatical errors are as bad as it is what it is, at the end of the day and for the ten thousandth time...
ReplyDeleteGod,there are so many, but may I add "could care less"? Doesn't that imply that one COULD care less? Should it not be "couldn't care less"? I guess it really doesn't matter at the end of the day...
ReplyDeleteAnd you wrote, speaking of Damon Bruce:
ReplyDelete"Sure, especially when I e-mail and we get into shouting matches over industry crap, my blog, what people think of me, (not much)--truth is, I scream, he screams back and at the end of the day, I still LISTEN to this schmuck because he has some balls and isn't afraid of anybody.
Boring post. Talk about 9 to noon. Dibs gone, then Rey Woodson bails. The producer seems to be done w/ Raddy too. What about John Miller ripping him. And Kate and Bruno don't mesh.
ReplyDeleteHow about banning "Gaining the Upper Hand" when talking about wildfires?
ReplyDeleteI also hate it when sports announcers say there's "no score." Uh...yeah, it's 0-0.
Let's also ban "it's every parent's worst nightmare"...or using the word "little" when describing a kids ("Little 4-year old Johnny Smith).
"The American People" are tired of this...
ReplyDeletedont forget the oft used:"and what not", what does that mean?
ReplyDeleteand "what not"
ReplyDelete"Dramatic developments at the Casey Anthony trial"
ReplyDeletePlease never say "It is what it is"
ReplyDeleteHey yeh... where IS Ray Woodson ?
ReplyDelete"Guesstimate" should also be nuked.
ReplyDelete"Back in the day"
ReplyDelete"It is what it is" is a far worse crime, me thinks.
ReplyDeleteWTF LOL BRB yes we are that lazy....
ReplyDeleteBruce plays with his "personality" too much. WHO is the real D.Bruce? He went from bulldog to fru-fru poodle, and now back to bulldog. That fixation on Jeremy Lin is bordering racist, and if somebody says it IS racism,I wouldnt disagree.
ReplyDeleteJeremy Lin? The guy the W's signed to help sell tickets? The guy who is inferior to 95% of the African-American D leaguers who will never play in the NBA because their signing won't sell tickets? That Jeremy Lin?
ReplyDeleteAt this point I would say Back in the day we would only say it is what it is. Now we have dramatic developments and at the end of the day.. NO ONE CARES
ReplyDeleteWe all know why Jeremy Lin is sticking with the Dubs.. and I see no problem with it. We're quibbling over the 12th guy ? So he's a marketing ploy. So what. He can ball enough to hold down the 12th spot.
