KRON's Roberts experiences real-life suicide drama on GG Bridge
KRON's 'People behaving Badly' reporter, Stanley Roberts, shooting an otherwise innocuous CHP piece on the Golden Gate Bridge, Thursday, unexpectedly was involved, first-hand, with some mid-day drama on the span.
While in a CHP cruiser, a call was received that a man was over the bridge rail threatening to jump and commit suicide.
"It was eye-opening and 'crazy, " Roberts told me. "You never figure you're going to see something like this in real time."
After some tense negotiating from responders on the scene, the man was rescued and was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.
Unfortunately, as Roberts points out, and CHP brass confirm, many of these troubled people go back to the bridge and jump anyway.

WTG guys (and gals) for de-escalating the situation AND to the guys who went over to go get him. Great video Stanley- not for the sensation- but for it putting a face and sense of the tense emotions and effort put forth.
ReplyDeleteSuper story by Stanley...much better than some of the other stuff I see him do. I only wish he would work on his delivery. I get that is his style and all, but the choppiness of his sentences drive me crazy.
ReplyDeletewhat you do is get everyone chanting "Jump" "Jump!!" and 95% of the time they won't because they're actually narcissists(yes, true- depression is usually twisted narcissism)....the other 5% you can't help anyway...
ReplyDeleteI live in Seattle where the reporters have a much more professional delivery. I would expect the choppy delivery from an inexperienced high school student, but not from a reporter in the fourth largest market in the United States.
ReplyDeleteAfter watching the 2006 documentary "The Bridge", which told the stories of the jumper's surviving families, that rust-colored tourist icon suddenly lost all of its charm to me.
ReplyDeleteI heard Rich Leiberman jumped off the GG Bridge.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, right place right time but agree on Roberts delivery. I hate when reporters go out of their way to change their natural voice and delivery thinking it is the right thing to do and mutate it into something that just sounds really odd and bizarre.
