*KCBS' astute political analyst, Marc Sandalow, is a rare treat on Bay Area radio every weekday morning at 7: 30.
Sandalow, who once was the Chronicle's Washington bureau chief, breaks down the machinations of DC politics in a most entertaining, informative, and timely manner. Just today, (Friday) Sandalow explained the budgetary maneuvering between Obama and the GOP lawmakers and how the numbers and dollars could be suited for both parties.
It was good, solid, commentary and a well-done bit of back and forth between anchors, Stan Bunger and Susan Leigh Taylor. If you're a political junkie, it's mandatory listening. And damn entertaining too.
I'd like to hear more Marc Sandalow and less Jan Wahl. Surprise.
*KNBR tonsils, Tom Tolbert and Eric Byrnes, spent a good hour Thursday afternoon, (Byrnes was subbing for Ralph Barbieri) bashing the A's, the Coliseum and just about all of Oakland too.
Nothing new here except this type of dreck, even by Knibber standards, gets kind of old. The unabashed shill machine for the SF Giants proves once again how a once-mighty station has become nothing more than an extra PR dept for its clients.
"Sports Leader?" Sure. A's fans know better.

Very well stated
ReplyDeleteThe Oakland bashing and the general shunning of the 'Towns' sports teams in general is one reason why, "..are you listening to KNBR less..." vis-a-vis Lee Hammer's KNBR survey.
ReplyDeleteI'm a Giants fan, but see this clearly:
ReplyDelete1) The As have won a LOT of games / World Series in their years
2) I can't help but think a downtown As stadium, served by two BART stops and a train line, would help bring downtown Oakland back.
3) Oakland risks losing possibly 2 sports franchises in the next 5-10 years.
The only thing KNBR is the sports leader in is commercials per hour. Or maybe self promotion...
ReplyDeleteByrnes is always going to be bitter toward the A's because they never gave him a shot to be a full-time player.
ReplyDeletePeople still listen to KNBR? Ratings don't show it. Must have been a slow news day to devote an entire hour to Oaktown. I turned these guys off years ago.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been a vocal treat to hear a valley boy and a surfer dude/Spicoli/David Lee Roth on the airwaves.
ReplyDeleteLee Hammer has the brainpower of a hamster..and what the station has become reflects that with paid Warrior shills, paid Giant shills and those gamblers who tell listeners they are not gambling they are making INVESTMENTS. Thats as close to criminal as you can get.
Nobody has ever seen Lee Hammer and Dick Cheney in the same room at the same time...
Richie:
ReplyDeleteYou misreprested the comments Byrnes and Tolbert made yesterday by saying they "bashed" Oakland. Couldn't be further from the truth. Listen to their interview w/Phil Taylor. I expect more perspective from a guy who used to call Gregg Jordan and Lee Pete all the time back in the day.
The 15 or 20 minutes that I caught of Tolbert and Byrnes re the A's didn't involve A's bashing at all. They were paralleling the Giants plight w/ Candlestick Park with the A's playing at the Coliseum.
ReplyDeleteThey said that Oakland is a great sports town with props going to W's fans as well as the A's fans that show up despite their ballpark. That a park like ATT located in Jack London Square would do as well as ATT has.
Unless you consider some sideways criticism of then mayor Jerry Brown Oakland bashing, there was none.
Rich, anything less than your Pollyannish view of Oakland is not necessarily bashing.
ah, someone mentioned the great Lee Pete...listening to that show on KDWN with all the handicappers, Jim Brown, his buddy Donnie Bader(sp?) etc etc...those were good times...was sad to read on the internet that i think Lee has passed away recently...
ReplyDeleteand what a great station KDWN was with the Pete program and also gave Art Bell his start...
