Hangin' with Mike Sugerman; CBS5/KCBS Vet had a Dance with Death; Tuesday pulse

Mike Sugerman is a Bay Area media veteran, having worked at the old KFRC in the 80's and for the past twenty years, a voice at KCBS and now, four days a week at KPIX/CBS5. (His wife is KCBS anchor/reporter, Janice Wright.)

Sugerman has 8 Edward R. Murrow awards and 14 Emmys in his trophy case and plays in the "Eyewitness Blues Band" (Dude!)

I asked "Sugey" how his day was going...He packs a busy schedule. Plus a story at the end that few people know...until now.

STORY: An ad in the Chron is selling a dog sniffing bed bug detective service. I've been scratching lately so I gave him a call and did a story about how dogs can sniff out bugs. Mo the dog came out, with his human Mike (turns out I don't have bed bugs)

LUNCH: Salad from Lee's Deli. It's usually a sandwich shoved down in the news van, either in motion or not (it's a glamorous business). I usually eat very healthy but once a week I go for a big pastrami or brisket from Moishe's Pipic Deli on Hayes St, my favorite.

WAITING FOR LIVE SHOT: Graded my class from the Academy of Art. I teach in Enterprise Reporting in the Graduate School once a week. Checked on the Giants, glad to see Brian Wilson finally threw and that Cain's elbow is feeling better. Dealt with some drama in the Eyewitness Blues Band (the band I started with other CBS5 and KCBS reporters)---we are grown up but like most rock and roll band there is always some fire to put out.

GLAD TO BE ALIVE: In a few days it will be the 10th anniversary of a near death experience when my aorta split apart. My doctor says it was one of the toughest  surgeries he has ever done and for a time thought about giving up, because whatever he was doing didn't work. He finally sewed up the split and I've been fine ever since, and it gave me an incredible view of life. I had too much stress in my life and over ten years have been able to let most of it brush off my back (there are days I slip but nothing like before). It doesn't feel like 10 years but it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.

  2. OFF TOPIC: You havent done a post on Lacobs blog and email attack. I see where KNBR hosts are in full force attacking bloggers or those who post on bloggers sites. I havent heard-as usual-the mention of bloggers being wrong or liars, just that KNBR personal attack of people they hate for doing "personal attacks"-lol. They dont see the irony. Blogger have no reason to lie..and those who honed an act based on deceit and company mantra, really hate the reality that comes back to them. Are some bloggers harder edged? a bit cynical? ok-how does that make what they say wrong? Or are you going to beleive those who giggle hours a day and see no evil?

  3. I'm a former photog/editor who worked with Mike at KPIX. He remains to this day one of the best-writing reporters I ever worked with (I'm no longer in the business.) We had fun with his "Candelstick Beergate" and "Skippy the Seal" stories. Good to see he's still at 'PIX!
