"Cumulus will not be able to generate adequate profits from their moneymaking ABC stations because the small market company only knows how to voice track and syndicate programming. Major markets require more attention because Dickey’s competitors will be paying more attention to their stations. KGO legend Mickey Luckoff got out in time when he had it up to the gills with Fagreed Suleman. One of the uglier side effects of handing successful ABC stations over to a man who has never really run radio stations is that they will lose audience and under perform."
Jerry Del Colliano writes about radio and broadcasting in "Inside Music Media."
Figures,no sooner do I post that ch.7 seems like the last ethical news division-more or less, than the most unethical manager known-Dickey- will take over and strangle that station. He does it everywhere else and thats bad news for the news people.
ReplyDeleteSad, I grew up listening to KGO. I remember waking up in the morning and hearing Owen Span on my mom's transistor radio. I really have listened to KGO my entire live. Since I moved back to the city from the East Bay and no longer commute by car, I haven't listened daily in a couple of years. I did end up attending their live remote at the Marine's Memorial. That was when I learned Luckoff left, the Cure-A-Thon probably wasn't going to happen, Gene was ill.
ReplyDeleteAll I could think of is what the hell is going on over there? Sad that a bunch of hacks are ruining one of the greatest radio stations ever.
Sure, some of this is incompetent management.
ReplyDeleteBut the picture is far bigger. Hang around any young people? Ever walk down Market Street today, and almost get run over 5, 8, 10 times, by folks glued to their electronic devices?
Attention spans have dropped, and the under-40 crowd might prefer to spend their time posting their nefarious pictures on Facebook, etc. And the parents allow their children to text at the dinner table!
I agree with poster "10:00am"; which is why I find it pathetic that KGO goes on twitter and facebook to try to appear “young and hip”. It does not work and it won’t work as Rich has pointed out more than once. I wish they would try to be what they were in previous years; unfortunately those days are probably long gone. I do hope that they get rid of that “let’s talk about it” buffoon. He sounds like he is talking from inside a sewer pipe.
