And So Why Do I Hate '7Live'?; Wednesday Wash
KGO-TV's artificially-enhanced, uber-superficially program, '7Live", (weekdays 3-4PM) is a supposed "local", interactive show. Really?
I have seen just enough of the program to make sure I hate it, but I wanted to try to be fair and watch a full show. Truly, I was adamant that if there was a there there, I wanted to see it.
I watched Tuesday's show, (well, at least 10 minutes at the top,) and then realized why I have ripped this pathetic piece of garbage, and it is garbage.
The opening segment began with a, get this, Charlie Sheen bit. A bit. Oh, and yes, the obligatory Facebook/Twitter conduit and a lame poll. "Local?" My ass. "Interactive?" Give me a break. Try forced and contrived, and I'm being kind.
It was pretty much standard fare. Artificially-enhanced "content" with absolutely NO local connection whatsoever...and host, Brian Copeland, with several attempts to induce "jokes" before a studio audience that reeked of a bunch of Burlingame housewives.
First off, I have no issues with a local station trying to be original and offer something up new. But '7Live' is nothing new and has all the authenticity of a fillet-o-fish at House of Prime Rib. The host and hostesses rely upon gimmicks and tried-and-trued formula, 2.0 visual spam including Facebook and Twitter. That's not innovative nor enlightening. It's a hodgepodge of crap with very little substance relying upon so-called "social-engineering" sites that wants to be seen as hip and technologically up-to-date. It is neither.
Copeland can be occasionally funny and knows how to steer a ship, but the "topics" are transparent wonder bread. There is nothing original there and his co-hosts, Jennifer Jolly and Lizzie Bermudez, add nothing. Its like a lame local "Entertainment Tonight" with very little variety and substance. Certainly, nothing at all worthy of watching at 3 PM either on the tube or on-line.
Combine that with the fact that the word from several sources is that the show is on borrowed time and KGO already has a judge show in place and is only honoring its commitment to the program until its ready to pull the plug when Oprah splits in September.
So, yeah, I had enough of '7Live' and really didn't need to see anymore what I already knew and imagined. Put that on your Facebook update and tweet it.

Brian Copeland is VERY bad at this concept. I used to cringe when people would walk by him like a panhandler during his "Man on the street" bits on Mornings on 2. I have never seen someone not be able to get folks to spend a couple of moments on TV. I like Copeland when he fills in on KGO and is play is really good but as a host, or live talent, Wayne Brady he's not.
ReplyDeleteI can count at least to this that are factually incorrect in this post. Try again, fat boy...
ReplyDeleteCopeland isnt funny enough or even close to famous enough to overcome that voice. I have no problems with the guy-I just cant stand to hear that voice. Fine for a character's sidekick..but a host on afternoon TV? Asking too much of my ears.
ReplyDeleteAnd it seems to have gotten shriller since his ch2 days. He smokes?
Could not agree with the writer more....just a terrible terrible excuse of a show. Brian is truly awful and contrived and the whole thing is like something that is being forced through a sieve. Repackaged garbage.
ReplyDeleteCopeland is the weak link on that show. He lacks the looks of a leading man host, he’s not close to being funny, his voice is annoying and he wears t-shirts under his coat that emphasize his man boobs. Furthermore, his facial expressions give me the creeps.
ReplyDeleteI believe Spencer Christian would’ve been a better fit as host. Jack Swanson, do us all a favor and replace Copeland with Peter B. Collins on Sundays.
There are 998 other channels with 998 better things to watch from 3:00PM to 4:00PM weekdays. Besides as we all know they are dead hosts walking and the show is only on air until it runs through September and will be pulled. Who says that anyone has to wait until September - well I guess KGO does as they have to keep paying Brian and gang for ever this ever diminishing experiment...I mean this well known mistake. You have hear of MADTV, this is SADTV.
ReplyDeleteWell, when your potential audience would rather tune in at that time to Travel Channel and watch a fat bald guy eat fried cockroaches.. then you must have one dull local show.
ReplyDeleteUnlike Rich,I think a good local show is important..but,finding a local host who has "It",real star power-How can it be so hard to find within the bay area?-an area teeming with talented, smart, people who have things to say.
These local TV execs,I presume, are themselves lacking so much in talent they are blind to hire the many who have "It".
Anyone remember Ronn Owens's brief attempt at TV?
ReplyDeleteCopeland is so awful. I would bet $20 that if he could be coaxed out of retirement, Ross McGowan would do a better job hosting this show than Copeland. Easy.
ReplyDeleteReminds me of the awesomenicity of Riley's Ride.
ReplyDeleteSecond both McGowan and Spencer Christian (but his show bombed at that time too.)
ReplyDeleteRich, this is when you are at your best! Copeland is not funny!! He's not worth the price of admission, oh wait it's free...it's the same pin heads that chime in daily on facebook, boring....thanks for bringing the truth to us...
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with the comments and article. It's too bad because a local show, done right, would be such an asset to this large market.
ReplyDeleteGo to hell, Lieberburger!!
ReplyDeleteHaters all of you. Bitter fucks working in your dull newsrooms. Too funny... Someone was talking shit about Dan Dibley but those same folks would give anything to work at KNBR. I work for a bank and I'd work at KRON, ABC, or KNBR in a second.
ReplyDeleteThis place is fun to read (sometimes), especially when you are stuck looking out at Market Street at 7:30 on a Wednesday, but the author of this blog is an insecure hater and I'm smart enough to know that the people who leave some of these comments are has beens with an axe to grind. Anyway that's my 3 cents. 7 live? Never seen it but it sounds like a lot of people watch it so they must be doing something right.
Sincerely,
Paul in San Francisco (Damn, I wish I was home!)
I disagree. But you are entitled to your opinion. But how can you critique a show you only watched 10 minutes of instead of the full hour?? If you had watched a full show you would have seen LOCAL championship boxer Nonito Donaire in their studio. It's like reviewing a movie but only watching the opening credits. Also, I like the social media techie interactive aspect of the show. It's okay if you're out of touch and don't understand how to use new technology. We get it you're old and set in your ways. I can't get my grandpa to use a computer properly either.
ReplyDeleteBring back "Dialing For Dollars" with Pat McCormick.
ReplyDeleteThe show sucks. Jolly sucks. She was a terrible reporter. She was a terrible fitness "coach" what a laugh, she's fat. And she's a terrible "host." Maybe she should resume the task of collecting ex-husbands.

ReplyDeleteBring back 'Mayor Art' with Art Finley or 'Captain Satellite' with Bob March.
ReplyDeletePaul in SF, are you nuts? Nobody is envious of Dan Dibley. He spends his time on his knees worshipping Radunich and sharing the same space with that dirty chubby Hick P-Conn. You’d trade places with him? 7-Live is not a good show. Period.
ReplyDelete@Paul... I'm the pen of the first comment. Like you, we are all obliged to our opinions. Me: Not bitter- never a hater- absolutely LOVE my career. The Bay has always had some sort of local talk show going back to 'People are Talking' (at least during my life time- perhaps there were others before). This incarnation is simply not that good. I did like 'View from the Bay' with Spencer Christian and Janelle Wang. Apparently most did not. BTW... I normally default to 'Anonymous' as it's just simpler. No need to hide here- Anthony in Oakland
ReplyDeleteMayor Art? Captain Satellite? Ah, the days of youth. Dialing for Dollars would indeed be an improvement.
