KGO Radio uses Facebook as focus of its News Blocks; Carter B Smith and the marginalization of knbr and ksfo; Wednesday Rundown

*In their overtly transparent plan to get younger, by any means necessary, KGO Radio, once, a hallmark, dominant outlet with teeth, has now hit a new low: The news-talkie has begun an earnest, straightforward push toward the use of Facebook as a driving force behind its various news blocks, but most noticeably in the "Morning News" with Ed Baxter and the insufferable Jennifer Jones Lee.

Even more embarrassing, KGO has even resorted to using the social-networking site in its hourly news ID, "This is KGO...SF, San Jose, Oakland, 'Facebook", I swear to god I heard it several times just the other day.

Wow.

First off, a little analysis.

KGO, via new jingles, promos, guests, contests, 14,000 hours of traffic and TMZ crap, is desperately trying to go young. Terrific. Great. Go for it. Never mind the fact that when KGO was killing everyone in the market, (including KCBS,) for over three decades, they were still perceived as "old", yet their broader audience was so huge and expansive they still were immensely profitable and didn't care.

Now that they have fallen back, complete with new GM and management philosophy, anchored by a horrid corporate owner, (Citadel,) that pinches pennies, they have succumbed to gimmicky ideas to try to bolster new listeners, but have, in effect, alienated their loyal, hard-core audience.

The Facebook card is nothing new. And yes, nobody disputes the power of it as a promotional tool, hell, every TV, radio, PR, person on the planet has embraced Facebook.

But when a major SF radio station utilizes it as part of its brand, there's something wrong there. It's tacky. It reeks of desperation and false intentions. You really think KGO's "friends" are that much more cherished, say, by my friends? I mean, give me a break!

KGO can get a boatload of something better than mere false "friends", maybe, god forbid, listeners, by going back to basics. Like cutting out the insidious chirpy, condescending, and disingenuous chatter. Like giving us more NEWS!, more information; like hiring more spirited and compelling talk-show hosts with hard-nosed opinions and topical cachet. That might move the meter and increase listeners and get a higher cume, hello!

Instead, KGO is going down the slippery slope road of irrelevance. I don't mean to beat a dead horse, I listen to KGO and was an ardent fan and admirer. I wish KGO went back to try to be KGO. Seems the new GM and her minions in programming and news thinks that splashy, goofy new jingles, cackling anchors, incoherent talk-show hosts and Facebook will spike the numbers. Uh, I don't think so.

*I grew up in the 70's and every now and then listened to Carter B. Smith. He wasn't one of my favorites, I was more a Dr. Don Rose, Jim Dunbar, Bobby Ocean kinda guy. But Smith was relavent, at times, very funny, charming, interesting and yes, unique in a 70's sort-of-way. I didn't hear him when he worked with Sherwood, but I remember him as part of the old KNBR with the likes of Frank, (Dill) and Mike, (Cleary), CJ Bronson, and Hank Greenwald hosting "Sportsphone 68", (How 70's.)

I mention this because Smith died Monday afternoon after battling a cancerous brain tumor for many months.

He wasn't as huge as Sherwood or Al Collins, but he was big enough to warrant many comments and remarks from those in the industry all the way from LA, NY, and here in the city.

Ronn Owens, on his KGO show, made mention of Carter B, and KCBS was all over his passing on their morning news. Ditto Ed Baxter on KGO.

I didn't hear, but KNBR's morning team did a phono with Frank Dill and offered a tribute. The 9-Noon guy didn't say a word. Not a word. For all I know, maybe he didn't know Smith--who knows?, but he never uttered a word. Not even a two-second acknowledgement. Nothing. How shallow. Talk about "reading the room", the 9-Noon guy likes to use that line, but apparently doesn't practice what he preaches.

On KSFO, (I don't listen anymore) apparently someone uttered a few words.

A point: Smith's passing wasn't a gargantuan news item. There's a gazillion folks, including those in the biz who've never heard of him. That's not the point. He wasn't a giant, but he wasn't puny either. He was part of a generation of giants that used to take this business seriously and were some of the most talented individuals around.

My late dad used to tell me stories about the likes of Don Sherwood's antics and how Lon Simmons did his sports reports from the Fairmont Hotel where the old KSFO was ensconced. Those were the days, I was told.

My point is that I think it was wrong that the 9-Noon guy didn't at least mention the passing of Carter B. Maybe he was too busy chortling with his insipid sidekick and other human morsel. Kind of emblematic of what is today's knbr and what the old KNBR meant in this town. Same thing for ksfo and yesterday's KSFO, you know, the "Sounds of the City", yes, THAT KSFO.

I think I made my point.

And to the friends and family of Carter B. Smith, my condolences.

  1. I dedicated some of Mozart's Requiem to Carter yesterday morning. I think he would have liked it as he started out playing classical in the early 50s. - Hoyt Smith, Classical KDFC

  2. I didn't hear his show, but the "9 to noon" guy not mentioning Carter B? I think he "read the room" perfectly. My guess is his audience doesn't know who Carter B. is, never listened to him, and, to sound cold, didn't care that he passed.

Radnich may have never met Smith, I don't think ever worked together, and yes, they both worked at KNBR 680, but two different eras and two different formats.

Should I publicly mourn someone that passed that was relatively well-known in my industry (at least in the Bay Area), that once worked at my company decades ago, but left there years before I started, and has been retired for years? Maybe. But it's hard for me to slam someone that doesn't.

  4. Rich, your assessment of KGO is right on point. Did you catch Ed Baxter yesterday urging listeners to “friend” KGO on Facebook for a chance to win a t-shirt? WTF happened to that station? Baxter is a bit too old to pretend being excited about Facebook. It all comes across as contrived. I think KGO is now attempting to mimick KNBR (especially the 9-noon guy); somehow they believe that dumbing down their show, talking about Tweets, Facebook and TMZ will bring the “young demographic”. Is the young demographic really that stupid? If KCBS added a couple of good talk show hosts in addition to their news they may knock KGO on their asses for good. Not a bad idea considering they recycle a lot of their news especially on weekends.

  5. C'mon....KNBR has been all sports for almost 30 years now. While CB was certainly a huge part of the earlier incarnation of KNBR, he'd left the building long before Radnich came around. And, more to the point, Radnich's listeners couldn't care less.

  6. I think the point Rich makes is a good one, and the fact is that whether Radnich worked with Carter B or not (and I don't believe they were at KNBR at the same time), Radnich is a Bay Area native who has worked in this market for an eternity and he should have acknowledged the passing of somebody who was a radio broadcast icon around here and moreover, who actually WORKED at KNBR. If the snub had come from somebody like Damon Bruce, I could understand because Damon is younger and not even from the Bay Area, but Radnich should have known better since he grew up in the Carter B/Gene Nelson/Don Sherwood era of radio around here. I think it just speaks to his self-absorption, and hey, to use a sporting analogy, the truth is that as a radio talent, Radnich couldn't hold Carter B's jock strap....

  7. I think in all that you mentioned showed that when conservatives take over anything-government,media,sports shows, they ruin it.
Their money can buy hold of objects but their philosophy of life stinks and causes the rot of society.

  8. Radnich is a fraud, takes middle of the road when pushed and has no real read the pulse of the moment. Shocking when his shtick includes reading the room and "I've lived a little bit"

Professional courtesy is not Radnich. Today he interviewed Mark Spears and Radnich - when not getting the response from Spears that he wanted - was flustered and went into schtick versus substance.

  9. Among all the other things, the week-after-week musical chairs with the talk show hosts has to be hurting. Gene Burns is out again this week. He was back all last week, after being out for a week or so before that. For me, the most irritating of the new formatting gimicks is the guy with the smarmy, creepy voice who does stupid promo interstitials, like: "Think the guy who shot Gabby is guilty. Let's talk about it on KGO." JW

  10. Speaking of Baxter, caught him this morning doing his best to NOT sound like a news reader. Problem was it was an overly long, rambling, poorly written, pointless news/commentary piece regarding Michelle Bachmann (R-Crazytown) where he watered down her latest goofy-talk then mentioned she was correct on one point and to "remember that (she was sort of right on one point) because you will see some criticism of her today on the blogs".
Definitely a 'WTF' moment during the morning news.

Caught some of Radnich this morning, I guess he thinks his demo is too old to know who Carter B was but not too old to bore his audience with Gloria Swanson and William Holden talk.

  11. Now that we are calling that "guy" "the nine to noon guy" perhaps it is best that he didn't mention Carter B Smith's passing. "The nine to noon guy" would have been jealous of him and said something derogatory. How many times do you here "the nine to noon guy" insult people he is jealous of and if they are not at least a strapping 6ft 2in, laying down as well as standing in "the nine to noon guy's" case, he bellows for them to stand a box.

  12. To everything there is a season, KGO's is over. Follow the clock hands around the dial, it's awful. Gene reminds us of the aging athlete who just can't quit. He is way off his game. Ray T has no edge left. Good people but in a different stage in life now.

Clark Howard and Tom Sullivan are more relevant than most of the KGO talkers. Never thought I would be listening to Sacramento talk radio...

Even more absurd is listening to Lloyd straining to include Facebook into his forecasts. Does anyone even know young people who listen to radio?

  13. "Nine to Noon Guy"...might be disingenuous which is one of Ralph's smorgishboard of words. KNBR has a plethora (Ralph)for surrounding too many C rated guys around Radnich. Dibbley is from where? Oakland? And Connors is from the State of Georgia? Its difficult to listen to Dibbley and Connors voices. Does Ralph have two more sons he doesnt know about. When Dibbley was on Comcast I thought it was Dennis the Menace. PLUS he picked a high school team CC to beat the local boys from Palo Alto. Sorry Dibbley.

If some day somebody ever writes the book about Radnich - I hope that whether authorized or otherwise someone takes him to task and reveals the real seedy side. Radnich says his ego is in check but I tried talking to him one year at FanFest and he was a jerk to our family.
His current show is a farce. Even though they tell us it is a schtick how can people listen to Dibbley interupt ad nauseum and Patrick Connor the self serving War Eagle tell Gary that he wouldnt mind a female reporter to tell him he had a large bulge. What has happened to KNBR's former stability. As a fellow poster mentioned he disses older demographics but then talks about Roller Derby Queen Ann Calvello. Speaking of Queens...when the book is eventually written I hope all Radnich's propensity to dabble in the "Hugh-Grant" type stuff is exposed. Prior to Alecia...GRad had quite a stable of off beat "friends"....

  14. By the way attached is Radnich at his worst. Asking a caller if he had a job. LOL the caller says..."what is this EHarmony.com"

  16. tom sullivan...you mean the "financial advisor" who didn't see the economic collapse coming and lost his own house ..in ersatz chic granite bay..the place with the overpriced monstrosity houses with styrofoam pillars? that Tom Sullivan? the one who can't pronounce'DIDN'T" the predictable right winger with the permed comb-over and the attacks on Bill Clinton for cheating on his wife..when he was cheating on his wife?

  18. A friend just sent this link to me - Hi Rich - appreciate your respect for CB - I love very few people, so it's truly tough to lose one of them. And, nice to see a nod to the 70's...

  19. Bubba, don't know anything about Tom Sullivan's personal life but I think he's more interesting than the umpteenth drunk driver trying to beat the rap. You gotta admit, "Market Timer" Bob didn't do so good calling the market or the economy either. Of course Sullivan, Brinker, Cramer, et al are there to promote the financial economy. Where are the Labor Talk shows promoting the interests of people who work for a living? It's quite fashionable to beat up on labor unions and government workers who have earned their pensions and so forth.

I'm all over the dial these days. Radio is frustrating these days to be sure.

    ReplyDelete
  20. you are right about there not being a labor talk show...and that's the same reason that good lib talk isn't generally supported( think Randi Rhodes)..It's because the entities who do the hiring..with exception of KGO..don't want that point of view given wide exposure...for obvious reasons...even if its funny, unpredictable and popular...it won't generally be mass-marketed..and particularly not anything pro-union.

You mean MUNI workers that can not show up to work for 3 days, but still have a job? Or teachers that can't pass a basic high school test? Or federal and /or state workers who can't be fired, get paid for all OT, oftentimes drive their (our) company vehicle home, and make twice the money we working stiffs make?

I respect hard work, just not CA or the state going bankrupt.

  22. I wouldn't characterize union labor as represented by muni..nor should you..I'd be willing to bet that a day without state and federal workers would affect your life in many, many ways...You'd likely cry uncle...quickly.
