Radnich ignores Carter B. Smith passing

One of KNBR's greats, Carter B. Smith, has passed away.

Not a word from Gary Radnich.

Am I surprised? Yes. No

We're hopeful someone over there will get the word out.

UPDATE: Word is that the "Morning Show" mentioned him.

  1. Ken Dito on KTRB/860 had a fabulous tribute.

  2. He laughed when LaLanne died, He ripped John Wooden the day after he died-called him a cheat. But the day any man who once signed his paychecks dies-and I'm being serious- Radnich will hang his head and cry tears. I thought he couldnt get any more overwrought at that Salvatores retirement.
I dont think -again serious, not sarcasm- I have ever heard Radnich praise a figure for doing good without a profit involved,or a buck made by himself tieing to that person. Never. I'm still waiting for him to praise MLK. Never heard that either.

  3. Don’t forget when he made fun on the passing of “10 for 15”. He even took a shot and said the guy was “alright”. As a previous poster mentioned, Radnich is the same self absorbed jerk who in passing mentioned the death of his colleague, the great Pete Wilson. What else can we expect from this a-hole? He has no respect for anyone unless the last name is Salvatore or Hammer. God forbid if a bus hit Tony Bruno this piece of trash Radnich would probably not even say a word the next day.

  4. Radnich is such a tired act - why is he still on the air? Every time I hear his voice I change the channel......

  5. I used to listen to KNBR 680 fairly religiously, even though I am an A's fan. I can't take em anymore. Radnich especially, and I used to enjoy listening to him. 860 may have low ratings, and gets shutdown after 5 PM, but I'll listen to them now.

  6. believe me I am no big Radnich fan, but c'mon you are really reaching... plenty of a reasons to get on him, but not mentioning Carter B Smith's passing....thats quite a stretch

  7. Ed Baxter of KGO radio had some very kind words re Carter B Smith this morning between 5-5:30 this morning.

  8. What do you want him to say...they never worked together. They've uttered the same call letters but decades apart. There is a good chance they never crossed paths. For someone who's got such disdain for Radnich, you sure do listen a lot.

  9. KCBS was all over this. Nice piece with a bunch of Carter B aircheck stuff and nice words from Frank Dill and others. Very classy, especially since Carter B never worked there.

  10. Its common sense to mention the passing of a station ICON as Carter B. Smith. Radnich never actually worked with Franklin. Its in his DNA apparently because I heard him the day Pete Wilson died and Radnich was pathetic.

He doesnt have common sense apparently.

  11. Pete Wilson died on July 20, 2007 which was a Friday. KGO did not make the announcement until the next day Saturday 21, 2007. KGO went into mourning mode the next few days and opened the phones to callers who wanted to pay tribute to Pete. Every station reported on Pete’s passing. The following Monday I specifically tuned in to Radnich’s show on KNBR to hear him pay tribute to Pete since they both worked together at KRON for years. Not a peep. The guy went about his business as if nothing happened. I’m not saying spend 3 hours talking about Pete but damn, say something about the guy. Show some respect. Nothing. What an a-hole!

  12. Pretty sure some day Radnich will say something that will warrant a pink slip. It's just a matter of time.

  13. When Salvatore had some kind of retirement party-Radnich was in mourning the next day praising the man like he was the second coming. Head down(not exaggerating,it was on Comcast) Radnich went on like it was eulogy with his most serious voice he owns of almost tearful platitudes. Like Radnich said-"Mr.Salvatore signed my first big paycheck"(!)
The next day, Sue Burns of the Giants passed away. He mentioned it, then went on with the show like he just got something out of the way- a public service announcement and no more! And... back to giggles!
At his age you would think he would realize that those icons of the bay area are respected and admired by some members of the KNBR audience. But,he can't wait to throw dirt on their graves like the true insensitive jerk he is.

  14. Radnich has no sense of Bay Area Radio history.
    What a shame.

  15. As Ralph Barbieri often says, "Two things can be equally true"; 1.) Most of KNBR's current sports audience wasn't around during the station's music era and have little recollection of Carter B., and Radnich had no obligation to make a big deal of his passing.
2.) Radnich is still an insufferable ass, and more and more listeners are realizing that.

  16. Regarding Ralph's quote, he actually likes to say; Two OPPOSITE things can be equally true...
About KNBR's current listening audience...that's THEIR fault. After the Bill Dwyer era morphed into the Salvatore regime KNBR could not keep their lies in order - in order to keep their stories straight. Salvatore threw Krueger and Rhein under the bus during the Alou managerial time with the Giants. Salvatore ACTUALLY encouraged certain on-air
hosts to criticize Alou and his Giants, but Salvatore denied it. Giants management leaned on KNBR to get rid of Krueger even though supposedly Salvatore had arranged a mea-culpa meeting between Alou and Krueger but it never took place and...Krueger and Rhein were let go after they produced and cut up sound bytes of Dana Carvey's characters - mocking Alou's sound bytes and grammar inflection. Alou in fact called Krueger the messenger of Satan...
All this time Radnich stayed in the middle never venturing his support to Krueger. Why Ralph is still there, one can only imagine. He has embarrassed himself with ON AIR diatribes with Rick Barry, Larry Baer, Ned Colletti and especially Sabean. Ralph has used his forum to bash Martina Navratilova calling her a fat lez pig, bashed Gretzky and hates Bill Russell who ignored him ONCE at Candlestick. Ralph says he played "110's" at Mills High and attended USF - only he hates USF because they despise his attacks on their sports department. Last week he openly said the USF president would not call him back. Tolbert has been missing a few times the last half hour of the show and Ralph literally CANNOT finish the show unless he starts by either asking a question or making a statement that goes on and on and on and on. I heard him once interview Joe DiMaggio and I was so embarrassed I turned it off. He asked Mr. DiMaggio one question that lasted about 5 minutes. Every time Joe D started to answer, Ralph interrupted.
Ralph also ripped off Angels fly because they take themselves lightly - from - Chesterton's book, Orthodoxy.

  17. Had it been the other way around, Gary Radnich died & Carter B. Smith were on the air, I would bet, Carter B. would have many kind things to say about Gary in memorium.

Carter B. was always a class act. I can not say that about Gary Radnich.

Gary has not figured out, what is important is how you are remembered.

We all have fond memories of Carter B., Gary Radnich is another matter.

  18. If some day somebody ever writes the book about Radnich - I hope that whether authorized or otherwise someone takes him to task and reveals the real seedy side. Radnich says his ego is in check but I tried talking to him one year at FanFest and he was a jerk to our family.
His current show is a farce. Even though they tell us it is a schtick how can people listen to Dibbley interupt ad nauseum and Patrick Connor the self serving War Eagle tell Gary that he wouldnt mind a female reporter to tell him he had a large bulge. What has happened to KNBR's former stability. As a fellow poster mentioned he disses older demographics but then talks about Roller Derby Queen Ann Calvello. Speaking of Queens...when the book is eventually written I hope all Radnich's propensity to dabble in the "Hugh-Grant" type stuff is exposed. Prior to Alecia...GRad had quite a stable of off beat "friends"....

  19. My ranking of KNBR shows:

    1. Murph & Mac
    2. [Nobody]
    3. [Nobody]
    4. The Razor & Mr. T (mainly because of Tolbert). If no Ralph, then this would be #2.
    5. Fitz & Brooks (Ho-hum)
    6. [Nobody]
    7. [Nobody]
    8. [Nobody]
    9. [Nobody]
    10. [Nobody]
Unranked: Gary Radnich -- they gotta replace this guy ASAP. I think he is from Conan O'Brien's old show - The Interrupter. And he can take his interrupter brother, Ralph B., with him when he goes.

  20. Thank you for mentioning Radnich’s constant interruption of others. I used to only tune in to the Bruno segment and now I can’t even listen to “the best half hour of radio” anymore because of Radnich’s incessant need to interrupt. It’s unlistenable radio. The guy used to be good. I remember his very first appearance with the Razor back in the early 1990’s. I remember when he would engage in conversation. Now the guy must feel very insecure because he always has this sick need to upstage everyone. Radnich has a knack for interrupting Bruno when Bruno is on a funny rant or telling a funny story. Have you noticed how he’ll throw in some nonsensical tangential wrench as a way to break Bruno’s rhythm?
I swear that blowhard does it on purpose to show he is still “da man”. Pain in the ass. Now I just tune into to Bruno’s show at night. I’m beginning to suspect that Radnich’s admitted heavy use of prednisone turned him into a Hulking self-absorbed blowhard.
