Your KTVU Post of the Day

Late last September when I reported that Heather Holmes would be leaving KTVU, I received many e-mails about the current atmosphere at the venerable Oakland Fox affiliate.

Much of the chatter dealt with in-house issues and the fact that although the Cox Broadcasting outlet is still the consistent #1 ratings leader in local Bay Area news, there's considerable angst inside the newsroom.

With regards to Holmes, this particular note got my attention: It's from a media insider familiar with the goings-on at Channel 2.

"KTVU is owned by Cox Enterprises, one of the world's wealthiest families.

Anne Cox Chambers (Daughter of the founder), has a net worth of $9 billion dollars, ranking 26th on the Forbes list of the wealthiest Americans. Her nephew, James Cox Kennedy is worth $4.5 billion, ranking 52nd in the U.S.

Their management minions continue to curry favor with the Atlanta based owners by pushing people out the door, who make big salaries, in favor of younger and cheaper. Do you honestly think Frank Somerville is paid anything close to Dennis Richmond. Ditto for Julie Haener vs. Elaine Corral.

The BIG scandal at KTVU is that female anchors are historically paid far less than the male anchors...which could leave them open for a huge gender discrimination lawsuit and they KNOW this!

Heather is a talented young lady, being forced out for no other reason that the greed of management and the owners!

She, and so many other before her, deserved better!

  1. Methinks you are overworking the word "talented". Reading off a teleprompter does not require much talent. And the best female anchor in the Bay
Area is probably the poorest paid (guessing) because the station is in such pathetic financial condition. Yep. Pam Moore.

  2. This is not just a Cox policy--most station owners are currently dumping high priced talent (just read the trades daily).

  3. ditto to "hearsay" comment

Cox family members take tremendous pride in the proud journalistic and broadcasting heritage of the company -- especially flagship operations in Atlanta: Atlanta Journal-Constitution and WSB radio and TV. Their cable operations similarly have a reputation within the business for quality and innovation. They may be doing some trimming, but probably more out of necessity than greed.

  7. She's probably sick of being forced to shill for Meg Whitman night after night.
