Owens caught in middle of Luckoff/Citadel affair; Radnich and Willie Brown; Monday mix

To say Ronn Owens is feeling a tad awkward these days is an understatement. Try humiliated.

Knowing Owens, this has to be one of the worst of his times at KGO, where he has held down the microphone for almost 35 years. Bad enough he literally was told he couldn't have ex-boss Mickey Luckoff on the air, worse yet, he almost certainly will be leaving KGO upon his contract ending, (2013) unless of course Citadel were to buy him out earlier.

**Willie Brown used to have permanent cachet in the Bay Area political, media, and social world, but his novelty has worn off and he's an impediment every time he's called on to work the Comcast pg 49ers show with Gary Radnich.

As I've stated in the past, Brown is more of a favorite in the immediate SF vicinity of Pacific Heights and the Marina, but in bridge and tunnel area, (think Walnut Creek, San Mateo, Marin, for example) he's scoffed at and resented.

Radnich continues to spout that Brown is there "because he's says something", as if that by itself makes him popular. In fact, Brown's appearance is an instant turnoff in the suburbs because he's loathed to the max. It's not just me who says it, but the viewers too, according to the numbers.

**There's word that a certain news director for a very popular TV news outlet may be on the out. According to one of my tipsters, his recent hires have become more scrutinized by a wary upper mtg feeling some heat from many of the old-timers.

**All quiet at KPIX, (for now.)

**KTVU had periodic bouts of complete darkness Sunday during the NFL doubleheader.

**That flashy new reporter in town who likes to brag to co-workers how "treeemendous" he is needs to check his ego at the door of the joint where he holds court.

**Bad enough some of the newbie reporters from way out of the market are working for nickels on the dollar, worse yet, when they obviously haven't even studied the local landscape: Doyle drive, not Doyle avenue. UGH!

  1. Willie's problem is-he lets Radnich just about walk all over him. Radnich's ultra conservative view of the world should give Willie a few great comebacks.Instead, he goes with his weakest material-talking straight football.
Willie isnt Willie if he lets himself be muzzled by Comcast and the 49ers. Like Kawakami's watered down appearances on Comcast at 5,maybe Willie should just resign.

  2. New GM at KGO/KSFO today. Former sales manager Deidra Lieberman.

  3. I'm out in the East Bay and I don't mind Willie but it has to be the right venue. Matier and Brown? Yes! Brown and Niners? No!

Niners post game? He's not an ex-player or a sports caster. It cheapens the product when they don't get someone with a background to make qualified assessments on the team.

  4. Ronn for public office, perhaps? Can't see him leaping to a second tier station or to another market. Even though he qualifies age-wise, I can't see him just retiring to a life of golf and sailing. How about Board of Supervisors? Wouldn't that be fun! Or, if as expected, the Repubs take over the House, maybe Nancy P. quits Congress rather than be a 70+ backbencher. That opens up a SF House seat.

  5. I personally don't mind former Mayor Brown with Gary Radnich on Comcast. Who bothers me is Eric Davis, he is 100% the 49er Ownership's mouth piece for the show, in other words a Company Man.
