Bay Area media ignores KPIX Singletary/O'Donnell interview removal; SJ Merc only outlet that notes it

The "Big Boys" did not acknowledge it. (Kawakami and Cohn)

Save for the San Jose Merc and ProFootballTalk, your SF sports media ignored the fact that the now viral Mike Singletary/Dennis O'Donnell interview was removed from the KPIX/CBS5 website. Who removed it is unclear. The 49ers were mum, as was Channel 5, (they didn't disable the embeddable version. For now at least.

This much is clear.

KPIX broadcasts the 49ers pre-season games and does a weekly show with the team. Both have a multitude of reasons to, shall we say, "get along" as both do business with one another. Unflattering interviews on tape make for good publicity for the local TV station and its top sports anchor. To a point.

Suddenly the interview is removed from KPIX's website. Either the 49ers were responsible or KPIX/CBS5 took it down, that much is evident. What's more telling is the vast non-reporting of the transaction.

You'd think the Chronicle/SFGate would at least mention it. Nope. Nor David White, the beat writer that covers the team for the SF daily. Not a word.

And not a word from the big boy bloggers Kawakami and Cohn, who relish this type of thing and one would think, is right up their alley.

Why would so many outlets ignore this story?

Good question. I think I know why. And I assumed the other guys would too, but apparently me, PFT.com, and Dan Brown of the Merc think its worthy of mentioning.

  1. Kawakami did say Singletary went on a "nutty" and dropped that term all through his article. But all the other writers have held back, bit tongues..some even chastize fans for calling Sing, crazy.
But,go to YouTube,go to the Saints boards,ANY sports board and read the comments..he's nutz is the consensus. Bill Cower this morning shook his head and said he had never heard a coach talk that way. Terry Bradshaw laughed at Singletary and said if he thanked Pete Carrol he's going to have pure gratitude to the New Orleans coach after getting whipped!

  2. You evidently did not read Kawakami's 9-18-10 column.

  3. OK, I did see he mentions it, but leaves it there and doesn't seem to care why it was removed, and who removed it. Very un-Kawakami-like.

  4. I was all ready to destroy KPIX after learning that the interview was pulled from the web but I wanted to see if they actually aired the interview in their "49er Preview" show (which the interview was originally shot for), which was on yesterday evening (9/18). The interview DID air within the show, just as it originally appeared on the website.

I'm guessing what happened is this...the 49ers, clearly embarassed by the interview, examined the contract that they have with KPIX to produce this show and found some loophole that states that KPIX only has control over the content that is "broadcast". In other words, the 49ers can't make KPIX re-shoot the interview and they can't tell them not to air it, but they may have some ability to stop the dissemination of the interview over the internet. That's just a guess but I bet you I'm close. I still think it's pretty disgusting how this went down, but the fact that KPIX still aired the interview salvages some sense of honor I guess.

The game tomorrow night should be interesting to say the least.

  5. The whole NFL Knows that we are the laughing stock of the NFL, with our inept Onership.

The Yorks don't know skippy about real NFL talent, Coach wise, GM wise, or Player wise.

Yet the Yorks managed to conned those poor people, (all 14,000 of them who voted for measure J) in Santa Clara to bulid them a Stadium. Holy heck...they can't even run a football team.
