NBC and Fox move in on KRON; Young emerges out of BK; Tuesday pulse

As KRON's parent company, Young broadcasting, emerges from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the rumor circuit has NBC, (which owns KNTV-11 in San Jose) and possibly Fox, which has always coveted a presence in the Bay Area market to run KRON, (which means the demise of the news operation at the 1001 Van Ness building.)

Fox aff, KTVU, is owned by Cox Broadcasting.

NBC, which essentially cut its nose to spite its face a decade ago, would seem to be the favorite to manage  KRON. The proposed shared-services agreement with NBC Bay Area makes too much sense to td, and would move the news operation to San Jose.

Watch this space for future details.

  1. What kind of sentence is this? I think you are trying to say that NBC and Fox want to run KRON. Why would they want to run KRON. Would they give up running KTVU or KNTV-11?

  2. Dollar and Sense rule: If the deal does not make a profit of dollars (or euros), it does not make sense.

  3. Why would NBC want to maintain an O&O station in San Jose if they could pounce on KRON once again? I always though KNTV was a stop-gap measure for them after the KRON/NBC affiliation debacle and never thought of them as a long term solution for NBC. If I were NBC, I'd move back into 1001 Van Ness and ditch San Jose faster than Tiger ditched woman number #2-13

Also, no matter how bad KRON is, there's still enough people in the Bay who remember when KRON was really a powerhouse. They've got the low channel number, some veterans, and a salvageable reputation.

  4. I don't think Fox would give up KTVU for KRON. Why would they walk away from, arguably, the #1 local newscast in the nation and the only station that actually made money last year in the Bay Area?

  5. When Giants games are televised on NBC Bay Area, prime-time NBC programming is moved to another station. Apparently, instead of TV36, KRON is showing tonight's NBC programming. Is that a coincidence or a signal that NBC is taking KRON?
