'VJ' format hitting other Bay TV stations; KTVU Update

Just when you believe the business looks as if its bottomed out and there's light at the end of the tunnel, along comes a jolt like the shake-up at KTVU. Ouch. More on Channel 2 later.

Looks like the KRON-inspired "VJ", (video-journalist) format is making its way to other stations', including KTVU, (FOX2) and KPIX, (CBS5.) NBC Bay Area, (KNTV) recently cut several newsroom positions, and don't be surprised if mgt. installs the vj system.

Even ABC 7 (KGO-TV) is not immune. A local industry wag told me this morning:

"I heard the V-J thing is coming to Channel 7. A videographer told me this early January. And so for a long time, excellent news videographers may see their careers' end. The TV execs do whatever they think they can and are entitled to do. But it is sad for professionals who have been there for a long time."

Simply stated, everyone: News editors, writers, producers, reporters, are on edge. Resumes are being forwarded everywhere. Only the long-tenured reporters and other staff are breathing easy.

KTVU UPDATE: Check back later in the day for a more detailed post on the major shake-up at KTVU, involving newsroom personnel. Because of the time I got word of Monday's developments, I wasn't able to get any word on the mood at Jack London Square in Oakland, but will work on that today.
