Schefter/ESPN Raiders follies; Bristol brats at it again; Sunday dish and NFL picks
There's a reason why the Bristol brats, the not-so-lucid tones of Adam Schefter and John Clayton of ESPN, are referred to widely as "BSPN."
Schefter reported Saturday that the Raiders have decided to retain coach Tom Cable for the 2010 season. The Raiders denied the report. Which isn't surprising since Schefters' "source" is the same individual who said JeMarcus Russell was done in Oakland.
The Raiders and ESPN are like fire and ice. Bristol has a thorough disdain for the Raiders organization, from Chris Mortensen to Schefter himself, and sprinkle in Chris Berman and radio minions, Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic, (ESPN Radio morning team)
That's why it's difficult to gauge the latest report as anything but frivolous because it comes from the Bristol brats.
Two weeks ago, I wrote a commentary piece here that the Oakland franchise and Al Davis should woo Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh. Early last week I got an unsolicited tip from an individual, familiar with the team and NFL, who said that Mr. Davis spoke to Harbaugh and his agent, Jack Bechta. Bechta denied subsequent reports that Harbaugh met with Oakland.
(I still stand by the report)
Cable may very well stay in Oakland, but at this point, it may well be because of off-field reasons. As Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com reports, the uncertainty of the 2011 season has many coaches that were thought to be fired, only to be retained. (Wade Phillips in Dallas, Jack Del Rio in Jacksonville, Eric Mangini in Cleveland)
Stay tuned. NO decision has been made in Oakland.
