Bruno/Radnich segment on KNBR; Saturday shorts

KNBR's Gary Radnich' thirty minutes with syndicated sports talkie, Tony Bruno, has become more lively and, thank god, due to technology, infinitely crisper.

The popular segment has now been moved up an hour to 11 AM PST, due to Bruno's new FM radio gig in Philly.

Late last week, Bruno 86ed the old cell phone connection and KNBR suits wisely provided him an ISDN line, (integrated services digital network) so as one listens, it sounds as if Bruno is right in the studio, but in fact, he's at his home in LA.

As funny and breezy as the thirty-minute seg had become, the increasingly annoying audio output from Bruno, (not his fault) was embarrassing. Now finally, with the isdn "box", the Bruno/Radnich schmoozfest sounds, technically, a whole lot better.

And, as many callers noted to Radnich, Bruno sounds more alive and engaging. Energetic too. For that matter, Radnich, who sounds a little fresher himself, seems more engaged.

Ironically, some of Bruno/Radnich' best material is funnier when something bombs, (like a lousy cell-phone connection) sort of Carsonesque, if you will. (Remember the time when a Carson monologue went south, Johnny made it funnier?)

The Bruno/Radnich 30 works because both have a sincere business connection and the heavy industry chatter is mixed well with caller-driven feedback and occasional sound drops. On Friday's show, for example, producer Mike Hohler played the CBS golf theme as Bruno was set to give his NFL predictions. The ensuing five minutes or so was hilarious as Bruno chattered over the sounds of Augusta. It was spontaneous and, yes, damn good radio.

(Breaking news, Lieberman likes a "drop", call the Cumulus suits)

**Speaking of Bruno, he intimated that he's probably not going to the Super Bowl in Miami this year. My question. Why not? Bruno is at his best when interviewing the various media/sports minions ensconced along radio row during the week-long shindig. Here's hoping Bruno's syndicates get Anthony to south Florida. Pretty simple from this arena.

**The end of civilization as we know it: Conan O'Brien did his last "Tonight Show" on NBC Friday evening. I don't know if I can sleep anymore.
