Van was old school. Refused to use a teleprompter and did not allow his sidekicks to use one when they worked with him. A Bay Area legend. Good sportscaster as well.
I first remember listening to Van Amber's doing a tallshow of KNEW in Oakland back in the late 1960s. KNEW also carried the Raiders through the early 1970s. Van Amberg actually worked as the sidekick to the great Bill King. Great memories.
That "Old West" commercial at the end of the KPIX Archive video looked like something out of the "Anchorman" movie. Would love to see the whole thing.
