A's TV Voice is a Total Disgrace; Jenny Cavnar PC Run Amok

29 comments:

  1. Jenny was absolutely awful last year. This year, she's better, but still not good. She was a step behind last year, so she called plays after it occurred. She also lost track of fly balls, so that may have been a vision issue. She seems to be better with both issues this year.....maybe due to the smaller ballpark.

  2. The difference between the Giants’ Kruk and Kuip versus Jenny Cavnar is striking.

  3. With all due respect to Jenny Cavnar, I hope she doesn't call another Warrior game on TV again. Yeah, she's still new and yeah, the Warrior thing is only for the Woman Empowerment game, but it was rough hearing her call a play after it happened and she didn't seem as focused on what was going on on the court. I know they had special stuff they had to get to for the special broadcast, but it was rough.

Cavnar made everyone miss Fitz. As I've mentioned before, I'm cool with Fitz, but I appreciated Fitz even more after listening to Cavnar call a Warrior game.

For baseball, Cavnar is ok and her and Dallas Braden appear to have good chemistry overall. I agree with @3:09 that she may be a bit better this year than last year so far, but yeah at times she's a rough listen.

    1. Had no idea she did Warriors games too. I think the action would be way too fast for her, considering she's behind with A's games.

    2. Cavnar has only done the Warriors women empowerment broadcasts the past couple of years... Yeah, she is behind on some of the plays for a Warrior game. Some of the stuff that Fitz or Kelenna would comment on, she would explain it way after the play happened or a play will happen without her giving the play-by-play on it. It was rough.

Yeah, it's a tough spot because it's a one-off game for her, but Tim Roye and even Fitz have set such a standard for play-by-play for Warrior games that it's just not the same when someone else is calling a Warrior game, even some of the national TV broadcasts.

    3. @9:22 that's embarrassing, just to satisfy DEI. I'll give Jenny this - she knows her A's history, so she was either an A's fan before or she did some homework before she came onboard. Something like an A's pregame show or podcast would be a better fit for her. Live game action isn't for her.

    4. @10:57- Not sure if it's to satisfy DEI as other NBA teams and even ESPN has followed suit as far as having an all female NBA television broadcast in the month of March for Women's Empowerment Month.

True, Jenny Cavnar does know her A's history. I don't think she grew up an A's fan as she worked with other teams in the past, but she for sure probably did her research and got familiar with A's history before she took the A's job.

Agreed, TV pre and postgame could work better for her. Maybe a Laura Britt or Kelli Johnson type role? I think she did something like that when she worked with the Rockies and/or she did some sideline stuff like Amy G did when Amy G was on the Giants telecasts.

    5. @9:39 but even at a Women Empowerment event, they still should've invited qualified announcers. It doesn't present a positive image for women when they tune in to watch someone who can't follow the action. It actually proves why women don't belong in the broadcasting booth. Melanie Newman is the Orioles PxP announcer. She is qualified and we need more women in broadcasting like her.

  4. She says the wrong name constantly, and her partner just can't shut up.

  5. Purely a DEI hire, especially apparent when they hired another new broadcaster in the same year who's 10 times better than her.

  6. Dallas has a face for radio.

    1. That long beard may need to go. It makes him look like a stoner or a hippie... Yeah he's kind of a free spirit but it's almost like you can't take him seriously as a broadcaster because of that beard.

  7. The Giants play in Sacramento the 4th of July weekend. (All night games of course). Should be interesting, as I have no idea where the A's fans are going to sit? That's Giants country!

    1. For real, right? Kind of awkward for the A's to be playing in Sac when Sac is Giants territory and the A's are playing in the Giants Triple-A team's (Sacramento Rivercats) stadium. The A's should've just stayed in Oakland or left for Vegas early and just play in the A's Triple-A team's (Las Vegas Aviators) stadium instead while they wait for their new stadium in Vegas.

  9. Why are we talking about the A’s as KTVU does most nights on their weird sports segment as well? Who cares about their announcers. They are no longer a Bay Area sports team. Same thing with the Raiders blabbed about on our local tv sports. I realize a large part of the SF Giants’ fan base is in Sacramento area but they are a team in SF = the Bay Area. How far away does a former Bay Area team have to relocate to before they no longer have their team’s performance or other aspects highlighted on Bag Area media? The sports radio stations KNBR and The Game quit talking about them. Good riddance to the A’s and Raiders and you folks need to let go of making them newsworthy on tv here.

    1. Chill dude. There's an adjustment period. Give it a few years. There are a lot of A's fans who still care about the team. Yes, we hate the owner, but we don't watch the owner, we watch the players.

  10. Speaking of baseball and banned books under the current administration, I just read that Jackie Robinson was a DEI hire by the Dodgers. Fascinating. From DEI to RBIs to HOF and GOAT. And to think he was the lesser qualified guy.

    1. Branch Rickey actually scouted several players, but decided that Jackie Robinson had the right temperament to withstand the very racist environment of those times. Of course, someone like Josh Gibson or Satchel Paige would've been head turners, so choosing a relatively unknown in Robinson was truly a visionary choice for Rickey.

  11. Rich, some of the responses here are much too lenient in their assessments of this announcer. She’s minor league quality at best. As you pointed out, there are minor league announcers who sound better. But the sad thing is that it gives local women sportscasters such such as Kerith Burke and the Kings’ color announcer Kayte Christianson a bad name. Women still have a tough time being accepted by many when they call men’s’ pro or college sports. But there are some VERY good women national sportscasters out there such as Doris Burke who dies color on NBA broadcasts and Jessica Mendoza who works on MLB games. A’s owner John Fisher is giving fans in Sacramento a minor league product at major league prices, and that includes their play by play TV voice. Sacramento already has a minor league team, and they probably won’t be staying in the capital city for more than three years. Fisher will take his Triple A outfit to Vegas and I’m sure the people there won’t care about watching a “ minor league” club with a minor league announcer because they will be too busy looking at their phones during games as they bet on line.🤣

    1. You highlight all the reasons why Fisher shouldn't be a team owner. He's a grifter who only wants to make a buck and could care less about the game and it's fans.

    2. Doris Burke is despised by the whole NBA collective

    3. Even worse Kate Scott of the 76ers how she got that job in major market is head scratching. Wonder how that works out.

  12. She must "know someone" to have gotten a play-by-play spot....she's just not qualified. The A's need all the listeners they can get, and she's not helping ....

  13. Do you think Chris CARAY got the job with zero experience but because maybe HE knew someone? At least she had a real resume.

    1. Good point, but for any first time viewer, they'd assume Chris had the resume. Jenny is sweet and has good energy, but live broadcasting isn't her forte.

  14. John Fisher is the Donald Trump of pro sports team owners. He’s an abominable idiot. Why else would he hire a minor league, ( no, try high school) play by play announcer?

  15. Rich, Thank you for including Ken Korach among great A's announcers. Those in the Lon Simmons school I found boring, but then I was spoiled on Monte More and Bill King. Korach and Townsend are the main reasons why I a am sticking with the A.s. You are so right about the corrupt MBL, and they still get protection from the government! I could not stand whomever was the woman I briefly heard before turning the dial. The Oakland exit is shameful. So while I am cheering the current team, at the same time I am wishing for a great Greek tragedy playing out on the road to Vegas.

  16. I can't say anything positive about that by far the worst announcer to ever speak into a microphone for the A's so I won't.
