Rich! Great interview !! I learned a lot about J Starkey - he is quite a hoot. While I wanted to hear his opinions on the current state of college ball, you kept the focus on Joe’s life, and I thank you for so doing. Your joke about the termite in the bar was new to me. I encourage all listeners and watchers to view the entire interview start to finish. Kudos to you Rich, and to your guest Joe S.
Interesting, I didn't know Charlie Finley owned a hockey team. For Joe Starkey to be fired by Finley after 5 minutes of employment is crazy, but not surprising.
Cool interview. I thought Joe was only Niners and Bears, but according to his Wiki page, he's done a lot of other sports.
"He has broadcast for the NFL's Minnesota Vikings (1977) and Denver Broncos, the USFL's Oakland Invaders and the first telecaster for the NHL's San Jose Sharks. Starkey was also the radio and television voice of the now defunct National Hockey League's Oakland (later California Golden) Seals and Colorado Rockies, who later became the New Jersey Devils."
5:11. Watched the Cal v. Auburn game and still couldn't wrap my head around the fact that the Bears and Stanford are part of the ACC. Strange days. Cal looked damn impressive!
Not a good announcer frequently missed id players and poor description had a yelling voice too bas the 49ers could not have had a better announce but guess since KGO had 49ers rights and Joe Starkey employed by them he did both teams.
this was great, although Starkey seemed a little bit stressed out.

I think Joe was a little uptight with your Howard Stern background. All in all great interview.
ReplyDeleteYep, he's a religious man, so r-rated pop culture probably doesn't align with him.

It's a shame what's become of the PAC-10. Now, just a PAC-2.

DeleteThe Rolling Stones story was funny.
ReplyDeleteJoe used to broadcast Pittsburgh Penguins hockey games when I was a kid. HE SHOOTS AND SCORES!
ReplyDeleteRich, you're getting good at interviews.
ReplyDeleteGreat interview, Rich!
ReplyDeleteWow. Great interview. I only wish you could have augmented it with the clips. But seeing Joe talk about the history was amazing. Thanks Rich.
