@5:50- 95.7 is good, and it's cool to see Rich give them some notoriety, but something has been lost on 95.7 without Damon there. Yeah, Ratto was a big loss for them too, but I'm honestly not as big on Ratto. His schtick didn't appeal to me as it did a lot of other people. I think 95.7 would've still survived if Ratto was let go, and they kept Damon.
Regarding Damon, he helped provide stability to 95.7. Even though I like the Steiny and Guru show overall, whenever Steiny gets into rants with Guru or always takes the negative contrarian point of view regarding the Warriors or the Niners or even the Giants, with all due respect to Steiny, kind of can't help but think, dang, 95.7 really kept Steiny over Damon Bruce? LOL
@5:50- Yes, Steiny and Guru have a good thing on 95.7, they're getting good ratings, and I understand why 95.7 hasn't broken up that pairing, even when Bonta (2019-2020) and then Dibs (2020-2021) joined their show, but imagine a Damon Bruce and Guru show? That would've been an entertaining and informative show for sure. 95.7 kind of missed out on that one.
If 95.7 wanted to keep the Steiny and Guru show and still kept Damon, I would've been cool with Damon being a solo host on 95.7 again. Some of Damon's best work has been as a solo host. I honestly don't understand why they just didn't do that instead. When you have a talent like Damon Bruce on your station, you got to find a way to pay him and hold on to him.
Even though it's been nice having Damon on Youtube, at the same time, I do hope he's back on 95.7 or KNBR one day in some capacity, even if he has a Larry Krueger role on either station where he's on occasionally, but can still do his weekday Youtube show. He's too good to not be on either station currently.
But yes, I agree with you, Damon is missed on 95.7.
Well said and nice to see you here Otis. I always see you in the youtube chat. I think 95.7 has a pretty decent lineup now and its nice they got away from the 3 host format they were doing for a while. I tend to listen to the whole morning show and stick my head in at different times during the day for the other shows. Steiny does tend to be a negative nancy, and Guru does get to be too much for me sometimes. Willard and Dibs can be amusing as well, but will never be enough to replace Damon at that slot. I agree about Damon and Ratto. I was never a big fan of that pairing. I think after seeing Kreuger and Damon do their youtube shows together now that they would have been a pretty good evening drive. Ratto was just way too debbie downer for me, although I did appreciate his knowledge.
@8:25- Thanks for the kind words! I like posting on here from time to time, especially when the topics of 95.7 and KNBR are brought up. It's nice to have a forum where we can give our two cents on both stations. I do appreciate Rich for this.
I enjoy posting in the Youtube chats. There's an interesting community in the chats, I've made some new friends in these chats. It's always great talking to other sports fans, and other fans and listeners of these shows. Having the Youtube chats was a genius idea and it's another way for the hosts to interact with the listeners. Still kind of get star struck talking to some of the hosts in the chats whenever they get a chance to pop on the Youtube chat during their shows. There really are good dudes on both 95.7 and KNBR, and Damon Bruce, who I've met in person a couple of times so far, is also a good dude. I hope to meet some of the 95.7 and KNBR hosts in person in the future as well.
@8:25- Agreed, 95.7's weekday lineup overall is good, and yes, them going back to the 2 host format is better. When they had 3 hosts, it was almost like everyone wanted to get touches or one host would be left out. The shows seem more focused with 2 hosts instead of 3.
I like Guru's passion. LOL. Yeah, he can be a little too passionate at times, but a lot of times he's coming from a fan point of view. Yeah, Steiny is always negative. Some of that could be schtick and some of that could be from his East Coast background and I know they have to kill 4 hours, but sometimes it's like dang Steiny, we can't be positive here? LOL.
@8:25- Yes, I like Willard and Dibs as well, but they had big shoes to fill replacing Damon and Ratto. I think Willard and Dibs were better when they were in the 9-Noon timeslot. Their show has more of a morning to mid-morning show vibe.
When they changed the lineup after Damon and Ratto were let go, I was kind of surprised they didn't put Willard and Dibs in the 10-2 timeslot and Steiny and Guru in afternoon drive, even though some in the chat mentioned Guru's commute. I think Guru lives in Sac so Guru doing an afternoon drive show may have been problematic for him commute wise. Plus the Steiny and Guru show may be better in the mid day hours. But yes, it still is kind of an adjustment having Dibs in afternoon drive, when he's been doing mornings for years, but overall, Willard and Dibs have a solid show.
@8:25- Agreed on Ratto. I respected his sports knowledge and appreciated how he can recall historical moments in sports and have more of a non-biased opinion on the local teams, but him acting like he didn't want to be there or counting down the minutes to when their show was over, got old fast. Yeah, some of that was schtick, but it was tired. It was like dude, we get it, you didn't want to work today. LOL.
I think Ratto kind of brought Damon's vibe down at times and he wouldn't participate in some of Damon's fun segments he used to do on his shows that were a staple of his shows (Tuesday Trifecta, the football segments Damon used to do with his Mom during football season, etc). I honestly never understood why they paired Damon up with Ratto when Damon proved he can do the job as a solo host.
@8:25- Yeah, Krueger and Damon would've been an awesome pairing on 95.7. Plus, they had history from before when they co-hosted the Niners pregame show on KNBR back in 2011, 2012. They work well together. Happy we get to see them paired up on Youtube currently, at the very least.
Sorry for these longer replies, but thanks again man for your kind words!
I have a difficult time listening to Guru. I like Steiny but Guru makes my head start throbbing and feel like it is going to explode. It all started a few years back when the NBA's Brooklyn Nets, with Durant, Kyrie and Ben Simmons, were on a 10 game winning streak. Guru said that we might be watching the best team of all time. Anyone vaguely familiar with pro basketball would say that is an idiotic statement. His train of thought has no logic, no rationale, no common sense and jumps from subject to subject in mid sentence. I find his mindless ranting boring and insufferable. Sadly, today that seems to work in sports radio.
@12:43 Guru is someone I wouldn't mind having a beer with, but I can't listen to him on the radio. He sounds like someone with a lot of passion, but when he's challenged by someone who knows their craft and studies their craft, he folds like a deck of cards. In other words, he's all hype, but lacks substance.
Dang Rich, you really have it out for Copes. Copes is trying the best he can and helping turn KNBR around. We'll see what becomes of KNBR, but I think with Copes at the helm, the station is in good hands. It would be cool if they somehow could bring back Damon Bruce or Larry Krueger.
Regarding Brian Murphy, yeah, he's not as good as he once was. I doubt KNBR lets go of Brian Murphy. I'm going to assume they let him stay on until he retires, then maybe by then they'll re-evaluate the KNBR morning show.
Tolbert and Copes actually have a good show. I know Rich doesn't like it, but their show is not really meant to be a serious show. Tolbert and Copes have fun and joke around, but they do have a lot of well respected guests that come on their show, and they do talk sports.
This is NOT OTIS: Otis, I agree with some of what you write, but KNBR needs a complete overhaul, from bottom to top. Get rid of Murphy, Lund, Tolbert, Copes, and put Papa on notice to cut the BS. Papa’s 5 minutes of blathering repeating himself over and over and over need to stop. The rest of KNBR “hosts” should be doing commercial work in Peoria IL
For 95.7, this is huge for them. You could see the strides 95.7 was making each year, even when 95.7 overtaking KNBR seemed impossible. I also think 95.7 having the Youtube component to their shows before KNBR did has also helped out, and it helped them gain a new audience or an audience who couldn't get the signal for 95.7 in their location.
I do agree with Rich on 95.7. I always felt the shows on 95.7 had a faster pace than the shows on KNBR, even back when KNBR was the top dogs over 95.7.
Don't miss Damon. 95.7's pairings (Bonta/Shasky, Steiny/Guru, Willard/Dibbs) are better. Too bad the Game lost John Dickinson. Markus on 680, though more knowledgeable and contemporary than Mac, tends to repeat his commentary.
That's pretty brutal considering KNBR's stronger signal and the fact that they carry both the Niners and Giants. It's not like The Game is putting out a great product either. But will they ask themselves "What are we doing wrong" or "What can we do better". Most likely, no.
Does anyone even listen to radio anymore??? I used to listen to jobs all the time. But I haven’t tined in for years. I go with serious radio. And have never turned back. And this is someone who remembers kfrc. Kya. K101. The camel. I even remember the cum spots campaign. But no more. Haven’t tuned into radio since don blue.
Tolbert is mailing it in most days. Copeland knows the Giants, but that's all. He is constantly making mistakes on other sports. He should be a program director or on air talent. He seems overwhelmed. Can't stand the listener calls. No one cares what Bob from Brisbane or Mel from Modesto has to say. I want subject matter experts not some A hole spouting off from his man cave. 95.7 is so hard to pick up on my radio. Can barely hear it most of the time. Too bad, because I'd listen to that over KNBR.
Agree on the next axe at KNBR. Terrestrial sports talk may be a thing of the past soon, as podcasts continue to gain popularity.
ReplyDeleteSports Talk hosts are going to podcasting since there's more freedom to say what they really want to say, plus it pays better.
DeleteNobody cares. All the hosts on both stations suck. All the real talent is doing podcasts now.
ReplyDeletePretty much
Delete95.7 the lame is going downhill fast. Damon carried them and he was canned.
