Great interview!.... Thanks Rich for asking Ted Robinson about the Giants and if he would ever consider coming back to the Giants and calling some games for them. It would be cool to have Ted Robinson calling some Giants games again at some point.
The Giants looking into possibly bringing in Glen Kuiper kind of tells you all you need to know about how they feel about their broadcasting crew going forward. Bringing in Glen Kuiper would be a PR disaster, despite how much pull Duane Kuiper has to probably make this move happen... Ted Robinson would be a respectable guy to have there and would be an uncontroversial hire, and someone who has called Giants games before and is familiar with the organization.
Duane Kuiper, and his side kick, Krukow, are both unwell, as in “have health issues”. Their travels have been severely reduced, and soon they will no longer be able to strap on the mic. So, what we are getting is a parade of possible replacements to eventually assume the position. Some hit, some miss, but the plan is a good one - tryouts for jobs. So far, nobody has risen to the top, but no big deal, there are many waiting in the wings for their shot. The parade will continue after preseason, with new voices popping up on road trips. But PLEASE no more FP, he’s not fit to broadcast high school games
I don't blame Ted Robinson for taking the high road on the Niners. I think we can all agree that both him and Greg Papa got screwed; Ted Robinson from the Niners, Greg Papa from the Raiders. Interesting that Ted Robinson had to really learn football when he got the Niners gig. That's kind of why I can understand why the Niners jumped on the opportunity of bringing in Greg Papa after the Raiders let him go. Even though Greg Papa called other sports, he's been an established NFL play-by-play guy because of all of his years calling Raider games. The Greg Papa hire made sense, and the Niners were getting one of the top NFL radio play-by-play guys. Ted Robinson when he got the Niners job, it was like, the Niners brought in a baseball guy to call Niners games. Ted Robinson really grew during his time calling Niner games though.
For the Niners. at least Robinson had the Harbaugh years, but outside of that, yeah, he called a lot of bad Niner games in the Singletary, Tomsula, and the Chip Kelly eras and the early years of Shanahan before the recent Super Bowl and conference championship appearances. Even though I like Greg Papa calling Niner games, hopefully Ted Robinson comes back to the Niners in some capacity, even if that was to include him calling some Niners preseason games or something like that
If there was one omission in the interview, I wish you could've asked him about the Pac-12 Network and his future regarding calling college football and college basketball games, and if he plans to work at other networks to call college games. Maybe if you guys do a Part 2, it would be interesting to get his thoughts on that.
I am the first one to gleefully point out your foibles, but I got to say this was a good one. Not a sports person, but this was interesting. At least your subject was less full of himself than the first one. Humility is always refreshing. Now if you can only deal with the laundry...
Now you're a Zoom pro, Rich. Good job on the interview.

ReplyDeleteGood choice.....and Marty Laurie.
DeleteTed Robinson is a legend.
ReplyDeleteBarry Bonds, Pete Rose, and Roger Clemens should all be in the Hall of Fame, but like Ted said, it probably won't happen until they've passed.
