One Week from Thursday: Ted Robinson

  1. I hope you ask him why he lost his job with the 49ers. We all know there's a backstabbing backstory with it. Those in the biz know he got screwed thanks to good ol' politics.

  2. Ted has a style best suited for tennis and golf - level-headed without theatrics. When he did 49er games, his delivery was a snooze fest. He was not bad as a Giants announcer, but again, it is a laid back game.
I suspect Ted has made enough money doing Wimbledon to buy Carmel.

  3. Classy announcers like Ted went out of favor for homers. Glad you got him for an interview. Ask him about Papa’s touchdown call and Ryan’s fanboy isms.
Speaking of classless, Tolbert and Copey Copes on KNBR dedicated over an hour to a call in segment where they let Giants fans call in to say how much they hated Shohei Ohtani and the Dodgers. Anyone saying anything else was hung up on in that stupid Giants’ indirectly sponsored segment. Wait till the Dodgers come to town and their fans, including Japanese visitors/tourists, fill the stadium instead of the trash talking callers many from out of State since I guess not many fans left here who are call in types. Wish you had not reminisced about sports talk calls and wanting to hear such again because their version of it is total garbage. KNBR sucks.

  4. As a serious tennis player myself and a fan (currently watching LIVE the ATP Acapulco open Rudd vs Shelton) I’m a huge fan of Robinson. He’s never been about acting like a buffoon and making himself the story. Looking forward to this interview and if you’re smart Rich, you’ll request viewers’ questions to avoid any unnecessary interruptions on your end uhum ehem…

  5. Wow, that's dope!... If you're taking requests, if possible, please ask Ted Robinson if he would consider calling Giants games again and occasionally filling in for Jon Miller, Duane Kuiper, or Dave Flemming when they're "on assignment"?

It would also be interesting to get his thoughts on the Pac-12 Network and where he plans to work once most of the schools in the Pac-12 go to their new conferences this Fall. Would he consider calling games on ESPN and maybe doing more West Coast games like Dave Flemming does?

    Thanks Rich!

  6. Ask Ted if his sensitivity training helped him after his Ray Rice comments.
Ask Ted if he's going to Paris to do any broadcasting.

  8. This is awesome! Too this day Ted Robinson remains my favorite Giants announce. There was something about his presentation and demeanor that I really appreciated. I’m looking forward to watching!

  10. Have met him a couple of times! 100% class act. Hard to find anyone who doesn’t like and respect him. Just remember Rich, ask a question, then let Ted talk. I would only interrupt for clarification, if really required, or to move the interview along, if he spends too much time on one topic, which is unlikely. The Dude is a pro!

  11. He lost his job because he's a giant bore

  12. Bill King was a "homer", but still has a great announcer the two things are independent of one another. Papa is bad period, putting aside the "homer" issue.

  13. Ted has a great sense of humor and his preparation is unmatched. He also worked at a Minneapolis television where they used to tape wrestling back in the day. He could tell you plenty of stories and does a great impression of the late "Mean Gene" Okerland.

  14. Tom Cruise's character in A Few Good Men listens to him while the Twins game is on TV.

  15. Ted always has always understood how the broadcasting game is played, ever since he showed up in the Bay Area back in the 1980s. He’s versatile enough to handle virtually any on-air sports sssugnment but he found his niche in tennis. It was kind of a shock that he was pushed out of the 49ers job, but when the Raiders ‘ clueless owner Mark Davis jettisoned Papa after nearly 25 years, he was available. The Niners’ broadcasting director Bob Sargent is not only friends with Papa, but wanted someone who would be more invested in the team than Ted. Papa’d only other gig is the KNBR mid day talk show, which tied in nicely with his 49ers job since “ The Sports Leader” is the 49ers flagship station. And Papa is also much more of a “ homer” in the booth than Ted, who has more of a network style, that’s another reason the 49ers wanted him. His over-the-top
    Touchdown call clearly illustrated that.

  16. Greg Papa is an awful play by play announcer, and that touchdown call is terrible. Both those Niner announcers need to go to decaf.

  17. Ted Robinson is one of the best play by play announcers in the business, and, it seems to me, has spread his abilities around so long with so many things, and unlike many personalities doesn't have the need for an ego-driven signature style, is vastly underrated and unappreciated. He is not a homer. Not that homers aren't legendary announcers. Bill King almost was with the Warriors, not quite, though you never heard him excoriate the poor quality of NBA officials when a marginal call went the Warriors' way. And Lon Simmons was a homer as the '49ers announcer. When a game went south, as often happened in the late sixties and mid and late seventies, Lon would kind of quit, lose some interest, turn his wry wit to mocking the local eleven.
