Haener and Somerville: They Both Need Each Other; KTVU Dynamic Duo of Yesterday

25 comments:

  1. I vote for Somerville's return. I agree with you that Haener and Somerville together form a fantastic, established duo. Will it solve all of KTVU’s issues, even just those at 10 p.m.? No. But I do think it would reinspire and reinvigorate not just Haener but the entire staff. With Mibach, Haener seems to be blowing in the wind, adrift. It could also instantly inject a sense of accountability. Many people root for the underdog, or at least the person counted out. By his own doing, that’s currently Frank. But life is about second, third, or even fourth chances and rebirth. I think his return to KTVU would be a win-win. Hell, what do they have to lose? They can only go up from where they’re at.

Rich, if Somerville doesn’t return to TV, I’d love to see the two of you pair up on a regular podcast series.

    1. I agree with everything you said, 1:04. Give Somerville another chance. One strike and you’re out. My gut tells me he wouldn’t blow it this time. Maybe with the new ND at ktvu there may be an opening for a reunion.

  2. Bring back Somerville reuniting him with Haener, move Mibach to lead sports anchor (Ibanez’s replacement), and let Martin keep mumbling until he hangs it up or decides he wants to surf full time.
Then, immediately focus on the quality of the reporting at 10pm and let it trickle down to other shows.
Basically work on being really, really good at the bread and butter and let the chips fall from there.

  3. This is Frank. God bless both of you for saying that. I’ve worked really hard to deal with my demons. It’s an on going process. But I can say this. They are under control. I’m 8 months clean and I go to five aa meetings each week. And just so all of you know. Me most recent arrest was for one reason. I was defending my younger daughter who happens to be black. Both my dad and my brother made it crystal clear that they didn’t consider her part of the family. In fact my dad deliberately took down her picture. But kept up the pictures of his three other grand kids all of whom happen to be white. I went ballistic. As any parent would. Snd my brother called the police on me. That’s all this has to do with. Me trying to stand up for my beautiful black daughter. Anyway I truly appreciate your support.

    1. Wow, 8 months being clean would be starting with right after the Berkeley incidents. Sounds like you are pulling on racial heart strings again to get us to overlook your issues.
The LA Times said “Somerville was arrested on suspicion of criminal threats, public intoxication, assault and violating probation, and was taken to the Berkeley jail, authorities said.” Then, it goes on to say “About 3:26 a.m., police received another call from the home on Indian Rock Avenue saying that Somerville had returned and was ringing the doorbell. Officers found Somerville sitting in his car and showing “objective signs and symptoms of public intoxication,” authorities said. He was arrested on suspicion of DUI and violating his probation, and was taken back to the Berkeley jail.”
So your dad, racist in his old age as he may be, gave you license to do all that to him and your brother in your view. You have a warped righteous mind. It was not your house. You blame your brother for calling the cops as you were drunk and abusive. Yea, get your job back and I will look forward to seeing you make a fool out of yourself again.

    2. Frank, tune out the noise and the trolls and keep focusing on YOU, not what these couchbound, keyboard warriors anonymously say about you.
The incidents that led to Frank's downfall seem to revolve primarily around alcoholism and related substance abuse issues. This includes going on air intoxicated, drunk driving, and domestic issues (in which no one was physically injured). All because he was struggling to get a handle on his issues. With that being the case, why are we ostracizing this man? If he's truly sober and in a better place to function professionally then why shouldn't he be given another chance? Are we so sanctimonious and holier than thou that the thought of giving a recovered man a chance triggers us? If yes, how pathetic.
And it's not like Frank is some unqualified dunce off the street. His substance abuse issues aside, there is no disputing that Frank is a highly-regard news anchor who is great at his craft. After 30+ years in the biz, I suspect he would pick up where he left off....and draw in a lot of viewers to see him refreshed and renewed.
(And, no, I'm not Frank. Just some regular schmuk who struggled with addiction for much of my life (now 6 years sober) and still remember those who gave me opportunities to get back on track, despite my demons.)

    3. Good job Frank! Someone has to defend her. They sound dispicable, and you should address that in your interview. It's about time people heard about what really happened. We've been waiting what, like 8 months to hear the real story. Its time for you to throw off the shackles and be yourself. Tell us, tell Rich, what the whole story is, all the stuff that the lamestream media didnt print or talk about.

    4. We're with you Frank, when you're on top of the hill, there are always people trying to knock you off. Looks like your family is like that, they must be small and hateful people. You really need to talk about that, what they did to you and what they are like. That's the part of the story that is completely missing, no one knowns anything about them and how they treat you.

  4. Bring back Frank, he should get a second chance. If he blows it again, then adios.

  5. Haener is fine and arguably the most competent anchor they have. She's experienced, knows what she's doing, and provides stability through the craziness otherwise known as KTVU. Pair her with someone who is equally as competent and respected. Conspitation Man, aka Mike Mibach, isn't the guy.

    1. Very arguably the most competent anchor they have. Very arguably. I've never worked with Alex Savidge, Jana Katsuyama or Claudine Wong, but I can't believe they're more intelligent than the smiling robot.

  6. Julie Haener’s son is a star QB in the NFL.

    1. Star QB? Ummmm, I’ve taken as many snaps and thrown as many passes in the NFL as Haener, per statistics on espn.com and nfl.com. Facts matter.

    2. Dude has only played in preseason games so far. 4th round pick with a 4.5 million dollar contract currently. I'm guessing you haven't made it to division 1 college (where he was enough of a star) much less to the nfl. Those are also facts.

  7. bobbleheads barbie and ken reunited?! Methinks not, it will show how truly desperate KTVU is. Carte blanche again for Frank and he knows it.

  8. Love to have Somerville return and anchor the news. With one caveat....no added commentaries, just stick to the script and report the news.....

    1. In other words, just read the stories other people research and write. Something the intern could do.

  9. Rich, I just came up with an idea this morning. I know you've been wanting to do a written blog. If possible have a written blog just on Sunday mornings. Something like a Herb Caen column... just an idea! Whatever you decide I've enjoyed your blog since the beginning.

  10. Mirror, mirror on the wall. Who's the biggest phony of them all? Puhleeze!

  11. Are we so sanctimonious and holier than thou that the thought of giving a recovered man a chance triggers us? If yes, how pathetic.
Yes it is. The keyboard kops all think they what they say actually means something.
    I guess me too!

  12. Why do they miss him?

Frank was a dunking bird who read what was put in front of him and didn't understand most of it, unless it had something to do with virtue-signaling his love of black people. I used to write for him and had to explain even the simplest concepts to him sometimes. He's not Harry Reasoner.

  13. "Frank's going through some issues..."

He's a fratboy who went through a midlife crisis and blew away the woman and children who loved him. What's pathetic is he was starting to go through this crisis when I was there, and that was when Frank was still on the morning and midday. Then he drove a red sports car, had hair-plugs and flirted with interns young enough to be his daughters. He has no redeeming qualities.

  14. They shouldn’t give him another chance at KTVU. And I doubt they will

  15. Drumk Frank needs to admit he didn't have a "disease". He was just a weak, selfish, self-centered drunk who finally woke up and quit his bad destructive behavior through will power and stepping up and being a man.
