Marty is the best. I've been listening to him since he was doing the A's pre-game segments. Since he joined the Giants, I look forward to listening to his pre-game interviews and stories. It feels like going back in time and/or an escape from the craziness of modern day. His post-game shows were so long sometimes that he'd still be on after my 3.5 hour drive from Tahoe. There's a ton of baseball-related podcasts these days, but nothing beats the genuineness and enjoyment of a Marty Lurie show.
You are absolutely correct! Marty Lurie is A-1 !! He KNOWS the game and he has great guests week in and week out. I have bought several of the books of authors he had on the show. His Uncle Abe was a damned good teacher, obviously Marty was a smart student. I wish he had a straight up 4 hour program, pre-game if possible. There are a few radio Programs that hit home runs: Marty’s, Tom Mazzolini on KPFA, Diane Niccolini on KDFC, Mina Kim on KQED.
I used to work with horse trainers at Golden Gate Fields and after our early morning work with them, I would meet some friends and co-workers at Spengers for breakfast. It was never very crowded but the meals were excellent-large portions and good service.
A little known piece of history: Mr Spenger almost bought Ano Nuevo Island in San Mateo County. Can you imagine his having a seafood restaurant just off HWY 1 ?? I would have enjoyed it, but maybe things worked out for the best. I miss eating at Spenger’s - nice waitstaff, tasty food.
