  4. With equal portions of Mathias from The Omega Man and Rupert Pupkin from a The King of Comedy see Big Vinny in a tour de force of an insane man still pinning for the golden days of talk radio 2 decades ago.

  5. I too miss the old KGO, but let's not forget the great content that we listeners now have. Many former KGO hosts now do live weekday shows on YouTube, which are also posted as podcasts. While these shows typically don't take listener calls, they do incorporate listener "chat" (text messages) and several book lots of live guest interviews using their former KGO connections. Commercials are much less frequent than they were on KGO, and streaming video has its advantages over the former audio-only content.

Here are links to the current shows that former KGO hosts are doing:

Nikki Mederno, Mark Thompson, and Kim McCallister's shows can all be found at 810friends.com.

John Rothman abandoned YouTube but does a weekday podcast available here:

Karel does scheduled YouTube and podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/@ReallyKarel.

Brian Copeland does weekly YouTube and podcasts: https://www.youtube.com/@CopelandsCornerPodcast.

Leo Laporte does YouTube and podcasts:

If you don't want the video, here is a link to the above shows as podcasts:

  6. Good stuff Rich. How a predatory, irresponsible company such as Cunukid stays in business is a mystery. They have a front office of idiots, cretins and people who know NOTHING about radio. Companies such as Cumulus and Audacy have ruined the radio industry by downsizing and dumbing down the product. Now if you listen to KGO, they’re playing a series of annoying, snarky unprofessional nit wits who talk about sports odds. Seriously? What kind of audience does that bring in? Radio in the bay area is a joke. It’s mostly a collection of syndicated, vapid shows that save the company money while giving the public nothing but junk food for the mind. Or it’s young ‘eager Beavers, wide eyed naive youngsters, mostly out of college who belong in places such as Fresno or Modesto, learning the craft in the minor leagues if broadcasting. Having worked on-air for both KGO and KCBS, I was witness to the rapid decline in programming of both stations, engineered by irresponsible Cumulus and Audacy. The FCC is a useless tool that can’t or won’t do anything about it. Deregulation, which is constantly being touted as effective manner to improve business has NOT worked in radio or in the other media. No wonder our public is so misinformed and has voted for unhinged idiots such as Donald Trump. People cannot get reliable, credible news coverage anymore because most rely today on social media, which is almost exclusively based on opinion. Or they watch the propaganda of right wing media. Sad!

  7. Rich, how come Fresno can have a locally sourced talk radio station that everybody listens to, but it’s not possible in San Francisco? Even Sacramento has local talk.

    1. I wonder this, too. I listen to KMJ quite a bit...it's somewhere between a bit to a lot too right/conservative for me...but it's "Live and Local" talk radio! Cost of living in Fresno is lower than the SF Bay Area, but I can't imagine talent is working for $25/hour + SAG/AFTRA benefits (maybe some of the weekend hosts are...). They do seem to have a nice stable of local advertisers--that tile company, the ag supply company and the "barstool guy"--so they must have a strong sales team.
