The KPIX Extra Debuts Tonight at 855 Battery

They've been doing dry runs all week, even the major stars...

TONIGHT, the debut, TWO HOURS of local news, KPIXPlus But will anyone watch?

To be determined.

  1. Only if it’s Goodrich and Donchey

  2. I’ll be watching it or at least recording and watching it later. They picked very good anchors and finally snagged Devin Fehely away from weekends. I’m looking forward to seeing how it does.

Sara Donchey, not so much. They should have asked Brian Hackney to also come and anchor & move Sara Donchey to weekends.

The idea is to see how it goes for the next several weeks to even 1 year before more changes are on the horizon.

  3. They're all debuting new shows. KTVU announced some sort of news show with a local focus at 7pm. I predict it will merely be a reracking of the appropriate stories they've been running all day since Mornings on Two, and adding remote interviews from people on their laptops, where the anchors lob softball questions at them like, "How do you see your new social program helping youth in Oakland?" Yawn.....

  4. I'm still not sure what the differences are. Before 9/1, there was already 2 hours of local news: 5-6:30pm, and 7-7:30pm.

  5. The new big virtual reality weather studio seems to be the sizzle

  6. They haven't scrubbed KBCW from their website in embarrassing ways. If this to be a big launch weekend for "kPIX+", it's lame.

    1. I read that CW is pretty much being phased out and it’s not just the Bay Area. Even Seattle that had CW11, led by our KPIX anchors (Anne Makovec) and meteorologists (Paul Heggen, Darren Peck, etc) pointing to Seattle from their KPIX studios but using generation old graphics.

As an example, Seattle’s CW11 is now Seattle 11 which is just as lame only having shows but no more NOW newscasts, or any in particular. Evidence is that the ratings pretty much were poor & dwindled.

I think the KPIX anchors used their primetime break to record Seattle newscasts (i.e. Anne Makovec) then weather pre-recorded & played.

  7. I went back through my DVR & can confirm the 9PM Primetime Edition was basically a repeat/recording of the 8PM Primetime Edition. My guess is they only record 1 hour & let the 9PM one be a previous recording of the 8PM, even including weather (the difference from the live views). On the stream past 11pm, they play that now rather than Juliette Goodrich’s news.

  8. The 3-D weather presentation was a lot like the CNN election night graphics display. I think ABC News also used it for election night and presenting polls. I’m thinking CNN or ABC was packing the augmented reality weather display into a truck so it would be shelved at the warehouse, and somehow it fell off the truck and a CBS employee who was in an alley found the thing.

  9. Someone at 855 Battery Street needs to start updating the anchor/reporter bio page...

  10. Devin Fehely is pretty much the main lead in this primetime edition & just love his style of anchoring & how he communicates with everyone. He asks good but sometimes tough questions while maintaining a professional, no-nonsense approach to anchoring. He also has that confidence in what he believes he’s saying is the truth.

Jocelyn is another one who I also enjoy too. This is how anchors should behave on a newscast; Donchey, Reed, and Yamamoto are known to goof off sometimes unneccessarily at times. The jokes are good from Reed but the transition to weather can piss some people off - in terns of his anchor & delivery he is great and to the point.

KPIX finally saw in their eyes & made the right decision to move Fehely off the weekends & into the weekday primetime slot. It is a major win for him.

Max Darrow on the weekends is very solid. Professional, serious, has that charisma and energy and to the point.

  11. Good Lord. It's the 8pm KPIX news on channel 44 on Monday. The weather set has to be the wackiest thing I've ever seen. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

  13. Darren Peck claimed on Sunday evening’s newscast that he would be in on the Primetime Edition demonstrating his graphics. Both him & Paul do a great job.

Darren Peck who many claim has little man syndrome looks more tinier on the 3D weather set rather than his shortness. Paul Heggen is definitely taller but at least he is good. Still I think both do a great job. The difference is that Darren Peck did the whole 2 hour block with the 8PM with the last rays of sunset and 9PM, so not exactly a rehash.

Something tells me that Darren Peck instead of doing the newscasts at Noon & 3PM has done the 3PM newscast and the Primetime Edition giving Paul Heggen a good break before the 11PM newscast. Burch is back on being at noon. Also the 3PM newscasts all last week were pre-recorded with Jessica Burch (or Darren Peck) and Paul Heggen is coming at 5PM (KCBS around 4PM).

The fill-in situation could be interesting but it’s time they get a few more meteorologists to fill in the gaps.

  14. ALl this means is the producer will simply re-write earlier stories to "freshen up the copy." Count on seeing constant use of the following phrases: "We have a developing story..."; "Here is the latest on that (insert story here) we first brought you earlier today." ANd they won't have anything new to report; they just want to re-use the story." Also, photogs, reporters, and editors will be asked to shoot an extra stand up "close" or retrack a new sig out.

    1. That's what it looks like at both the hours. Might as well just put it in 1 hour, and the other hour, something like KRON 4 can have a different hour of news.

    2. Same problem with weather on weekend mornings. On the heat wave Saturdays in July, being a First Alert Weather Day, they get the latest which is a pre-recording from Paul Heggen or Darren Peck. All other stations have a live weekend morning meteorologist working.

I seriously wonder if this advent will allow them to start snagging meteorologists for different times of the evening.

As an example today like yesterday Darren Peck is doing 3PM and the whole Primetime newscast while Paul Heggen does 5-6:30, 7-7:30, and 11pm newscasts.

KNTV has a similar take on that in which their weekend meteorologists cover 1 portion before the chief comes.

    3. It sounds to be a regular now but Darren Peck is doing 3PM & 8/9PM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (rather than 2 days a week like previously). Paul Heggen is doing 5-6:30pm, 7-7:30 and 11-11:30pm on Monday-Wednesday. Of course like usual he’s on during weekend evenings only.

Thursdays & Fridays Paul is doing all times but nobody is doing the weather at 3PM instead of the pre-recording of Jessica Burch & Paul is permanently coming at 5PM regardless of who is filling in.

The fill in situation could be interesting if Paul is not there, maybe Darren will do all hours. Otherwise Paul if Jessica is off. Lets wait and see.

  15. Wow! KPYX has more news at 7:00 am to 9:00 am and 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm! They eliminated the 10:00 pm newscast due to KPYX going back to being an independent TV station!

  16. Gimmicks. Nothing but gimmicks. And I can’t stand Donchey’s outfits, looking as if, as soon as she leaves work, she is heading off to either a rave or a 70’s themed disco party. And then there is Heggen with his blazer, jeans, and red tennies. Good lord.

  17. KTVU has more news now at 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm although KTVU Plus is also airing a 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm newscast!

  18. One more thing is the Primetime Edition on KPIX now replaces The Minute & First Alert pre recorded weather on weeknights.

Past the news hours, on the CBS News Bay Area Stream, 6:30 & 7:30 are just Juliette Goodrich’s show and 10pm & midnight are just previously recorded news of the Primetime Edition at 9PM. The weather regardless of the view at any hour is there.

However, The Minute is only there during the morning (10am-12pm) & afternoon (4pm-5pm) and weekends.

  19. Sara Donchey is really just a train wreck on the 11PM news. Yesterday, she wore some denim skirt jeans, mostly I stuck with watching KRON 4 news at 11PM (far, far far more decent these days). Not news worthy or professional of her at all to be wearing that to a newscast. You know one more thing I cannot stand about her?

After the weather, towards the end of the last page of the 7-day forecast, she comes back and blocks part of the graphics and she tosses it to Vern/Matt rather than Paul. It's downright cringy.

  20. I actually sat down and watched the 8-10:00pm news last night 9/12 on KPYX. Devin Fehely did a solid job. There seems to a lot more prerecorded content and on both KPYK and KPIX they are repeating feature stories over and over and over to the point I am ignoring much of their newscasts because I have already seen those.

The new weather technology is really technically very cool. Much like what partner Weather Channel does on the CBS Nightly News. I suspect in the case Broadway and Battery they are using their second north studio for those spiffed out weather segments since it seems to take lot of room and noting the extreme tininess of already short Derek Peck walking around.

Bottomline, the KPYK two hour news was watchable and we will see how the public accepts it as it goes along. I also have a further comment about the KPIX weeknight 11pm.

Sara Donchey must be an experiment to see if old traditional CBS local can garner a younger audience. Even as a senior I get that aspect but also tired of my wife complaining when we watch her.
The "costumes" are ridiculous. The idle chatter banter absolutely stupid and even after finally making the constantly moving camera robotics work more smoothly, she has to be in every set or segment transition, nodding stupidly while she slinks out of the scene of the next segment. She is somewhat attractive and has a decent delivery short of the chatty banner. I think she also likes the sight lines of her bust in doing that.

I am totally surprised if she has improved the ratings at 11pm and wonder what both News Director and GM were thinking when they brought her up from KCAL.

One last criticism: at the 9pm break transition there was absolutely no legal ID for KPYX which is an FCC requirement to show or tell call letter and location of the station near the top of the hour. Guess that is the engineer in me. Cheers!

    1. Exactly my point. It’s kind of like the same behavior of the weekend’s 6am & 7am news. Stories are repeated even if the anchor is live at both those hours on the weekend.

The difference is that 9PM ends up being a major rehash of the 8PM news. Pre-recorded at 8PM for repeat stories to air at the same hour. When Paul Heggen does the weather for Primetime its at the 8 & 8:30PM hour only with the 9 & 9:30PM being a full repeat of a recorded newscast plus weather pre-recorded. Darren Peck will do both those hours on Mondays & Tuesdays.

To me it sounds like these guys are only live for 1 hour and do not use the other 1 hour. I won’t be surprised if this KPYX Primetime Edition does not last for more than 1 year and the ratings make it go down the toilet and they cancel that completely

    2. Suppose my above point of the ratings does happen, Devin Fehely should still be primetime material, maybe co-anchor with Jules or be the anchor/face of the Late News at 11PM. He strikes up good, but intelligent conversations with everyone he works with. There are only a few other good anchors like Jules and Liz but Donchey is just too much full of herself just wanting attention. Devin is luckily the classic definition of what an anchor is supposed to act like on a newscast and knows what to report and what questions to ask as well as his demeanor and tone of it. Jocelyn, while far younger also is a solid reporter/anchor. They should seriously let her be primetime material, too.

    3. I'm curious what is going to happen when Paul Heggen takes a day off and Darren Peck has to fill in. I see that like he does on Mondays and Tuesdays, his fill-in will consist of him doing all hours from 5pm and including the Primetime newscast and 11PM but the difference would be his enthusiasm to cover even the 9PM and 9:30PM hour doing the weather, whereas Paul Heggen does 8PM and the 9PM weather is a rehash of the 8PM weather. We will wait and see when that day happens. We had many days last year in 2022 when Paul Heggen was out due to covid and a week long vacation but really enjoyed seeing him filling in on evening weather.

Brian Hackney? Don't know, don't care, he sometimes uses some day old graphics on weather headlines when he shouldn't.
