She single-handidly lifted SF oit of emotional ruins at a time when it needed it badly.
Ms. Feinstein was stately, regal, and elegant at the same time. She understood civility in a business that didn't have much. Today, especially.
She held convictions, of course she did, but she gave respect to the other side. She was tough as nails and always on point but she always looked and listened. Emphasis on listen. How many politicians actually LISTEN these days? Not many.
From a media standpoint, Ms. Feinstein was superb. She talked the straight talk; NO BS, no hyperbole, always speaking on real terms and sincerity. You could agree or disagree with her on certain issues but you couldn't argue against her passion.Like I said, she transcended politics.
Today is a sad day in the world, especially here in the Bay Area, SF in particular. We knew this day was coming, even so, a sad day nonetheless. We've just lost a true SF Giant.
She should have retired a long time ago. Making her stay in the Senate was elder abuse IMO. I say 'making' because I think she was taken advantage of in her last. years.
ReplyDeleteActually quite the opposite. She was asked to step down multiple times only to say "I will serve as long as I can."
DeleteYeah, right.
ReplyDeleteThe day the Columbia shuttle broke apart I was working at KRON. I got a sound bite from her that went something like, “There is so much we know from space exploration. We know the sun is a black hole. We know there’s a galaxy in our solar system. We know there are other life forms listening in on us.” Soooo I cut it into my piece. The EP comes by and says, “We can’t run that.” “That’s the only bite,” I told him. He watched it, shook his head, and said, “Just make it an on-cam tag where she expressed her deepest condolences.” “But she didn’t,” I said. “From the sound we got, it’s not even clear she understands they died.” “Just make something up,” he said. So I wrote Dianne’s condolences for her. Later I was told her office was in fact using my words for her “official” statement.
She was an idiot who was kept in her position, as most of them are these days, by people protect her, because they continue to make lots of money as long as she’s in power. Then they —mid-level government employees — retire to ten million dollar houses and personal staff and vacay homes while another idiot is put in her place. Paging Barbara Lee! [puking emoji here]
Ahhh, the good old days at KRON. Sensible journalism and good writing. Met Feinstein twice while she was mayor. To me, a regular working person, she was rich, impersonal and aloof. More like a Republican than a true Democrat. Always thought that she used her position for personal gain. Remember her Iraq War vote that eventually cost the U.S. 3 trillion dollars? Corporations that had her husband on the board got $1.4 billion of that.
DeleteDear 10:35. Diane Feinstein could have had you for lunch and not even burped. A stellar Stanford grad long before her life in politics, she was no dummy. There is no way in hell that she ever would have said what you describe with regard to the Columbia disaster had she known what had just happened.
Delete2:48 DiFi never flaunted wealth, ever.Just because someone is a pragmatist and moderate democrat does not mean that they are "aloof", or "impersonal"or in any way ostentatiously rich. You may be aware of the court fight over her husband's testamentary documents.
Delete@2:48 That's how local MSM rolls, she ran for mayor numerous times and lost, it was until poor Moscone was killed then upon she inherited the mayoral position, being an incumbent was she continued her mayoral position, however people have short memories, under her position she single handily killed the dock shipping businesses by over taxing them and they moved to Oakland, many big businesses moved out due to her
Deleteover taxing them by square feet of their businesses, good job, feinstein, like I said time after time democrats will vote democrats despite them being bad candidates
There is no reason to believe Senator Feinstein remained in office for any reason other than her own determination and grit.
ReplyDeleteOne of a few politicians that would respond to an concern, she responded and was very graceful, dignified and sensible in her reply, still have the letter, RIP
ReplyDeleteWell said Rich...
ReplyDeleteShe was the last competent mayor that SF had. And the meme about her being forced to stay in the Senate against her own will is bs. If she would have stepped down, Democrats would have lost their majority on the Senate Judiciary Committee and Republicans made it clear that they wouldn't allow Democrats to place judges on the bench.
ReplyDelete@11:15 Totally disagree, Willie Brown is the best in my humble opinion, always looked out for the city even as State Assembly Speaker and not only that came from Texas
DeleteShe was 50/50 in her mayoral-ship, along with her positives she also taxed business and waterfront shipping business so much most companies decided to relocate, tried to raise revenues by high taxes but in the end wounded up losing revenues, now the city's high crime rate is causing lost tourist revenues, even so RIP, I've always liked her
DeleteAs expected this will happen like any senator still working and the bad news. Her health and memory is going down each day. One strong woman, strongest woman in public.
ReplyDeleteUgh.
ReplyDeleteShe was great until the end.
ReplyDeleteCondolences but I didn’t vote for her the last 3 times she ran. After she vote yes to let Bush invade Iraq I left that blank in my ballot.
ReplyDeleteBarbara Boxer voted No and so should have Feinstein.
Thank you, 12:10.
DeleteThanks DiFi and Dick Blum for burying third world countries under mountains of debt and her amassing astonishing amounts of wealth for her husband by having various development projects across the city contributing to their fortune.
ReplyDeleteTheir political and economic policies have virtually locked countries into a colonial bondage with their lands being held by hedge funds and debt- holding banks while most social services are cut.
Thanks Dick and Di-Fi. Good Riddance to both.
I remember when she learned sF had lost the 49ers to Santa Clara. Gavin was mayor and he was cowering under his desk. Difi rolled up her sleeves and started making calls to save the team. But it was to no avail. She wanted to be mayor again and prevent things like that from happening. She couldn’t do much, though, with Gavin in charge, showing up drunk all over town.
ReplyDeletePeople forget that 49ers ownership blamed Newsom more than anyone for their moving to Santa Clara. Newsom kept adding more and more conditions before allowing a SF stadium to be built, such as building showers for fans who wanted to ride their bikes to the stadium, and the Yorks finally got fed up with it.
DeleteShe was an excellent mayor who responded to every letter that constituents wrote to her. When she was out and around the City, whenever she saw garbage accumulating or a sofa that someone dumped at a corner, she was on the horn to DPW and woe to the director if the offending matter was still there a day later.
ReplyDeleteAs a senator, I must confess that she lost my support during the Obama presidency. I recall her outrage that the NSA was spying on the Senate, but she fell right into line supporting spying on we mere peons.
Well...She died doing what she loved best, I guess. Don't get me wrong. I have mad respect for Dianne Feinstein. The way she held a city together after one of the most unspeakable tragedies in SF history is laudable. The doors she helped break down for women in terms of representation not only in the Senate (there were only two when she first began) but across the board just being an example of why women belong at the table in equal representation everywhere!!!
ReplyDeleteShe was a powerhouse of a woman and deserves that respect for a career well served.
What I'm not a fan of is senators and congressman staying at the dance well past their prime. Term limits!!! Chuck Grassley, Mitch McConnell, even Bernie Sanders and Nancy Pelosi...It's time to pass the baton and let the new generation take the reins. Lord knows the dysfunction can't get much worse (enter looming government shutdown).
Also, if you've proven you are physically or mentally unfit to serve, Retire!!! Not to mention the fact that a lot of these congresspeople end up becoming multi-millionaires while claiming to honestly represent their constituents. It's all so messy and dirty and corrupt on so many levels. Even those with good intentions often get sucked in. Bob Menendez is that you? Sigh.
But today is a day to remember the good and forget about all else in terms of Senator Feinstein. May she rest in peace. And may Gavin Newsom stay true to his word in assigning her interim replacement. the imbalance is still real and palpable.
Peace.
She died with her boots on, 4:29, a few hours after casting votes in the senate to maintain funding for Ukraine support.
Delete@7:25 Why in God's name are we sending more than a $100 billion to ukraine when it's europe's problem???? We need funds for Hawaii and the East Coast, FFS!
DeleteIt's all about power for all of them
DeleteI know they had to get it together in a hurry, but KPIX’s coverage of Feinstein is horrible. No one knows what they’re doing, tons of dead air, and Choi-boy is lost. When there’s breaking news, nobody today has the chops to cover it.
ReplyDeleteWeird. I saw KPIX reporters all over the Feinstein story. Reporters at City Hall. Reporters in Feinstein’s neighborhood, reporters at the state Capitol, and Juliette Goodrich anchored her shows live from the Capitol Rotunda in DC. 6:15 not sure what you were watching but it apparently wasn’t KPIX.
ReplyDeleteAll these GOPers outraged that a "dinosaur" was allowed to serve as long as she did...yet the GOP allowed Strom Thurmond and Mitch "Freeze Frame" McConnell to continue serving as long as THEY did???
ReplyDeleteKPIX did what all the stations should have done and sent their main anchor to DC.
ReplyDeleteJuliette Goodrich was inside the capital building where Nora is. The coverage was by far the best in the market . Hank Plant was even featured . Thorough coverage honoring the great Dianne Feinstein . Bravo KPIX. Solid journalism at last .
She was just like most all politicians, acting like she's doing something for "the people" when in fact they are just lining their own pockets. Her husband's businesses made millions off of many of her positions over the years.
ReplyDeleteShe was Republican-lite; absolutely unconscionable her vote granting Bush the authority to eviscerate Iraq. Well stated 12:10.
ReplyDeleteThey're all grifters, every single one. The reason they don't retire is because the money is too good and the "work" too easy. Normal people look forward to retirement to throttle it back and enjoy themselves. Politicians don't need to retire because they're already not working for a ridiculous amount of money, power and influence. Very few leave politics with less money than they came in with. Why is that? The income doesn't match the lifestyle. We have dozens of examples right in front of our faces, yet we mourn the loss of grifters that fleeced the American people for decades and talk of them being "true public servants". Suckers.
