KTVU Plan in Place Post Haener/Martin: Heather Holmes and Alex Savidge; Tamayo Weather; Mibach Still Lacking; KPIX Winner: Devin Fehely and Anne Makovec; Bay Area Radio Daze; NBC Bay Area Already Planning '24 Paris Games Army

TUESDAY...
KTVU and Fox have an unofficial Power4 new plan for the "10 O'Clock News" once Julie Haener and Bill Martin depart the premises, (or are told to)--it's a contingency already in place and ready for execution, probably Jan. of 2024...

Heather Holmes and Alex Savidge on the news side; Mark Tamayo on weather on weather; an unknown, as of yet, sports anchor.

Yes, Mike Mibach is the odd man nout but Mibach simply hasn't jelled with viewers.

KTVU needs a new change of scenery and fast.

*ANOTHER STAR POWER duo for KPIX: I've mentioned Juliette Goodrich and Reed Cowan.

Here's another: Devin Fehely and Anne Makovec.

. A FORCE for 5PM and a PixPlus bonanza. Fehely is a rising STAR with great technique annd BUZZ personified. Understated wonderment. And Makovec finally gets a PRIMETIME home. Talk about DUAL benefits for PIX.

RADIO DAZE: Morning radio in SF: a full amount of nothingness.

The morning buffoonery on KNBR, where Smurph and Smack don't possess an ounce of sincerity; the thoroughly robotic, drone-like KCBS team of Eric Thomas and Margie Shafer KGO? Never mind.

And KQED? A hodgepodge of wind chimes and audio potted plants. There's just a big VOID.

*Looks like NBC Bay Area suits are going to send an ARMYto Paris for the Summer '24 Olympics, among the throng, Raj Mathai and Janelle Wang, which is great for Raj, not so great for Raj's wife.

*BEST Crime reporter in Bay Area, bar none, KTVU's Henry Lee.

  2. Fehely is underwhelming and needs help which is why KPIX overloaded his newscast with taped hits from Goodrich and Cook.

    1. What exactly he needs help with? I don’t see him underwhelming or overwhelming.

Anne & Devin would be a great duo. Then the second best would be Goodrich & Hackney. Andrea Nakano & Liz Cook would be a good third duo if they went back on that style.

    2. Maybe Andrea & Kenny Choi my bad

  3. Raj going to Paris?! But who is going to give us the BREAKING NEWS and SAVE us all from the grips of... of... whatever it is that Raj thinks he is saving us from?!?!? ;)

  4. Many years ago it was Raj Mathai and T.J. Holmes together at The Olympics for NBC Bay Area. Per Google, Raj on T.J.: 'The sweetest soul I know. I've laughed with him, cried with him and worked alongside him for 21 years at NBC Bay Area'.

Once a playa always a playa!!

Amy Robach and T.J. where you at? lol

  5. Mike Mibach trying to get into KTVU studios come January 2024: (Enter guy locked out of entrance doors gif). Poor Mike...Should've just stayed on the day shift.

    1. I could not watched the morning shift, when they were working remotely and he was in his kids room with all of the pennants on the wall. It was unwatchable.

    2. Bill Martin really needs to retire. There is not a single broadcast where he doesn't flub his lines. In the broadcasting business, your voice is your life. How he has remained despite saying he'd leave a few years ago-is very strange.

  6. Pretty sure the Holmes-Savidge team will be a Winner. One hopes they get some good writers, and some varied reports: International-National-State-Local.
KTVU could make some big gains by giving H&S long term contracts: Continuity matters

    1. Good writers?!?

It’s almost all cut-and-paste from police reports and press releases today. Back when they used printers we called this “rip-n-read.” I love it when an anchor will come across some abbreviation used in the copy and just say it on the air, without even trying to make sense of it, because they didn’t preview their copy ahead of time. Pam Moore was particularly bad at this. Heenan and Hackney, on the other hand, are two who never get caught off guard.

    3. Jacqueline Bennett. I'll leave it at that.

    4. She does that on purpose. I’ll respectfully disagree with anyone who says she has no clue what’s going on. Women know when their nipples are on display, especially women on tv who are very self-aware of everything related to their appearance.

    5. I noticed it too! The crazy thing is the blouse she was wearing seemed to be pleather and I thought are the nips that big and hard? Wow

  10. Heather makes anyone she is teamed with better but I really think the two gell. Savidge is also a favorite of mine. If KTVU decides to do this, I think it will be a winner.

  11. Yay for Alex Savidge. He's a good anchor. I can't say the same for Heather Holmes. KTVU would be wise to continue looking for a co-anchor to go with Savidge. They may have to go outside.

  12. Henry Lee, unfortunately, makes too many errors in his reports. Ask some of the people he has interviewed at crime scenes. And KTVU will not air corrections.

  13. Savidge is cool. He kinda landed in the studio by default after getting hit by a car while live on air. Video is on YouTube somewhere. But I’ll take him over Mibach any day.

  14. I love Paris, it is a fantastic City. Sending Raj and Wang there will ruin it for Americans for 10-15 years. They are not good Ambassadors.
I can’t wait for their on the scene reports from Crimea.

  15. KPIX has converted all their weather casts to the virtual reality set which means the meteorologists are no longer sitting near the anchors.

I like it but it really just takes away the grand tour of all cities shown for all kinds of weather.

On the weekend we probably anticipate Darren Peck to be in there too, it’ll just look awkward with Hackney doing double duty. He does the news and suddenly has to go down or up a floor to the set and come back. Maybe just a sign he’ll just continue sticking to anchor and really snag a meteorologist.

What’s going to look very very odd as we head into the weekend is that you can see a giant window with pre-recorded weather seeing that it is still clearly dark even if the light comes in earlier or later. They need to fix this issue or just if viewership is so low on weekend mornings is to just remove the whole weekend morning newscast altogether.

I do expect Mary Lee to do the virtual weather at some point but not Hackney since Hackney is good with old technology & pulling up older graphics at times. Maybe a sign he may retire?

  16. i like to unwind and watch the ktvu 10 o'clock news but recently it's become nearly impossible to watch Mibach. I finally made the switch to kron which isn't any better but at least I don't have to watch Mr. Constipation Lou Costello for an hour.

  20. Never thought Bay Area News Media's televisions and radios would drop so far into the rabbit hole, for shame; just got back visiting relatives in the Central Valley and very impressed with Fox 40 News for their professionalism and those Female anchors are gorgeous! And Bay Area is a bigger market, SMH

  21. I don't agree with this blog's constant bashing of KCBS but I did hear something there this morning that made me wonder "what are they thinking?". A new ad, this one for California Psychics -- how can they expect to be taken seriously while treating such an advertiser as if it were a legitimate business? I thought they'd learned their lesson after Squatty Potty a few years ago, but they must be desperate for money to sink as low as this.

  24. Devin Fehely should be at 11pm news

    ReplyDelete

    1. Agreed. Now speaking of the 11PM news and the evening newscasts, both Juliette Goodrich & Sara Donchey were not there tonight. This meant Liz Cook coming in instead of 9AM or 3PM, to come around 6PM instead, filling in for both Juliette & Sara. It was nice to see Liz on at 11PM again. Always enjoyed how she portrays the news, very professional like always. The only thing is she's a little bit of a show-off with Paul Heggen sometimes.

This kind of scenario only happened some days between after Christmas & a little after New Year's. Honestly, still it was great to see Liz come in at 11PM for a change.

Devin Fehely would have also had a potential to fill in, he should get a say and chance at this once since he's always worked weekends & holidays too in the past. He is great and to the point in his newscasts on Primetime, it'd be nice seeing him at 11PM.

  25. Where is Jessica Burch this whole week? She's been taking off since Wednesday, having Darren Peck fill in, which I am sure will be a given on Friday. The reason I figured this would happen is because Darren on Mondays & Tuesdays would work the 3PM & whole Primetime Edition (8PM & 9PM) newscasts. Except this time on Tuesday, he was there LIVE at 3PM, but not at 8PM or 9PM (Paul Heggen was), which was a harbinger that he'd have to wake up next day morning. That's pretty much the same way it goes on some Sundays when Jessica takes a Monday off (Darren will work till 7PM and leave Hackney to do 11PM on Sunday, never seen that at all this month, or for the last 4 Septembers since he joined).

On the bright side, with the First Alert weather team on the VR side on pretty much all their newscasts, Darren Peck didn't have to worry a ton this time around on "dancing" requests and seemed to be fine this time around. They just treat him like the fill-in utility man to the point he never took any jokes well. With VR, yes, about 99% of the time no matter Darren's fill in situation, we will have him be there on the weekend evenings, but it'd be quite odd with Hackney doing double duty, because anchoring he's in 1 floor, then to do the weather, he'd have to go to another floor and then come back. Now, sports with Andrea Nakano, their place hasn't changed, it's still easy if Nakano has to do double duty.

As October comes, I'm curious to see what eventually comes on that end.

    1. I've seen Paul Heggen's Saturday morning forecasts. With the VR set, the problem is the sun only comes up after 6:30AM/7AM. The VR set really exposes a giant window of the Bay Bridge, nice I know. But now it tells you around what time of day the forecasts are pre-recorded; perhaps it looks to before the 5PM newscast or between 6:30PM & 7PM. This is very odd and awkward...And you know what else is? Max Darrow says "Hey Paul" and followed by a pre-recorded weathercast. It's true, no meteorologist is there anymore on weekend mornings like before (cost cutting, I guess). I also learned sports has always been pre-recorded for years.

Very awkward and weird on that end. Likewise at 9AM, noon & 3PM, the forecasts are also now pre-recorded and it looks like after sunrise. For example on the day we have heavy fog until the sun burns through it in the afternoon, the pre-recorded forecasts are recorded sometime in the morning.

On another note, you don't see VR weather on the weekend evening with Darren Peck; it was good to actually properly see the daytime highs/overnight lows for every city because the VR doesn't give all the cities. Plus the nice 7-day forecast, especially if it comes down to regular temps/declaring an Alert day.

This is just an honest observation. As much as their new VR toy is good and all, honestly, if you are pre-recording the forecast, just do it the old fashioned way. No one will be able to tell what time it's recorded because it's actually giving the forecast.

  26. I don't get the fuss with Devin Fehely. He is professionally dressed, anchors professionally with a lot of coherence and a no-nonsense authoritarian approach. This is how anchors are supposed to be.
