Friday Shop Talk; Don't Be Surprised If KPIX Teams Goodrich and Cowan; Industry Buzz Gets My Blessing; Steve Paulson Fixing for KTVU Morning; Julian Glover, Disney Power Guy at Circle7; AM Non-Serenity at The Firm; Cook/Clark Meh

FRIDAY SHOP TALK

DON'T BE SURPRISED if you see a new KPIX anchor team debuting in the fall; like, say, Reed Cowan and Juliette Goodrich. It makes too much sense and it would immediately catapult PIX into a huge nighttime presence.

Beyond that, as I recently said, it helps BOTH Goodrich and Cowan alike.

And who wins if that happens? CBS does.

Talk about instant mojo.

KPIX's numbers, in its new CBS News/Bay Area iteration have become stagnant. They need a BOOST. And they have the main anchors to get such a boost in their own backyard. It's common sense personified.

*ANY DAY NOW: KTVU morning weather guy, Steve Paulson, is headed to 6 and 10 PM because Bill Martin is really, really, wanting to split The Firm. Any doubts? Ask him, staff.

Martin is only there because the suits begged him to stay on because they didn't have a ready replacement.

*The second most powerful man at KGO (ABC7) is, according to my Circle7 moles, someone you don't dare mess with, even unintentionally: Julian Glover. He's a Disney hand-picked speciality. Glover not only is a reporter, but a guy who reports, if you know what I mean. Yes, he does check all boxes, which is a Disney prerequisite.

He's semi-feared.

*YOU DESERVE HONESTY, it's why you come here every day.

So take a look at FAKENESS in stride: KTVU mornings are anything but pleasant. Downright dreary and toxic. You could only imagine what it would be like if they didn't have good ratings.

Oh dear lord.

Pam Cook? Abiut as sincere as a Tenderloin coffee cafe. And Dave Clark? Oh, please.

*Enjoy your Friday.

  1. I also really, really, want to see Bill Martin split from KTVU; I hope he does sooner rather than later. I would rather see Mark Tamayo in the 6 and 10 p.m. slots, but I can handle Steve Paulson.

    1. Paulson’s worse. Martin is Hall asleep. Paulson’s the whole deal.

    2. Tamayo is a good anchor; accurate, competent and concise. Steve 🙂 Rosemary 🫤 Roberta 🙂

    3. Tamayo, yes, he’s good. Martin, egads. I can’t stand the way he keeps changing what he’s predicting while he’s in the middle of doing it. For god’s sake, make up your mind!

    4. Bill Martin needs to go. He’s worse than Biden. He is all over the place!

  2. Why wouldn't they promote Mark Tamayo to the weekday spot? Way better than Steve Paulson.

  3. Steve will feel right at home from his “News at Ten” days with Jan Hutchins

  4. It would be great to have Steve at 6 and 10. Mark Tamayo is fine but just too boring.

  6. Fox O&O is garbage. They've completed destroyed the #1 primetime newscast in the country. As much as Dennis' live reporting wasn't great, his retirement was the beginning of the end for KTVU.

  7. Julian and Ming at 11AM. Nark news.

    1. Nothing says "Cohesiveness" like having a culture/race reporter to monitor your every word. God forbid the misinterpretation and accidental dangling participle, which may be culturally insensitive? Egg shells or rice paper? What is your preference for resurfacing the newsroom floor?

    2. It always seems to work out in the end. These people always get full of themselves and it blows up in their face.

  8. For Julian Glover, a guy who started as a GA Reporter in Dec 2019, it has been a meteoric rise in power & stature in just 3 & a half years at KGO (ABC 7). In 2021 he was promoted to be Circle 7's Race & Equity Reporter & since early 2023 shares co-anchoring duties with Ming Sze on their 11am news. Now he is perceived to be the 2nd most powerful man at KGO (ABC 7). Obviously Glover checks all the affirmative action boxes in addition to now being Disney's semi-feared hand-picked NARC. I recently recognized Julian Glover in Oakland where he lives & for such a supposedly feared & intimidating Circle 7 employee, he's far from a imposing figure both height & weight wise.

    1. Disney is beyond woke. All garbage now.

    2. A person's height has nothing to do with their on-air skills.

  9. Juliette Goodrich is pretty good solo.

    1. I agree. And I'd probably stop watching her if I had to put up with Reed Cowan as part of the package. Hope they leave well enough alone.

    2. I would like to see something like Goodrich & Hackney be primetime material at 6 or 7PM from an anchoring perspective.

Maybe Reed should move to weekends (morning or evening, I’ve seen him fill in for both) & have someone like Devin do 3PM & 11PM. I saw Devin & Liz on Monday and both did an outstanding job. I really like Devin Fehely - authoritarian, exudes confidence with the truth and knows how to interview and report.

Also I hope KPIX really renames their weekday shows to just have Afternoon Edition at 12 & 3 and Evening Edition at 5, 6, 7, 11.

  10. Tamayo will halt his forecast to swallow! It's a drinking game as is the over/under for Paulson naming cities and temps, usually around 14!
Than there's Orozco and her party of 8 and Martin with his stumbling, mumbling, fumbling crumbling.

  11. I agree that Dave Clark has a very phony, L.A. veneer on camera BUT he’s a great human being. There’s nothing fake or phony about him in real life. He works that god awful early shift each morning and then returns home to take care of his adult son with severe developmental disabilities. Those who know him have absolutely nothing remotely negative to say about him.

    2. I didn’t know this about Dave Clark. Thanks for sharing. I’m not a huge fan of his on air style but knowing this makes me look at him a bit differently.

  12. I am surprised since Martin seems to enjoy pontificating his weather science wisdom in whatever he says every time I watch. To me it is cringeworthy though. For example, he says it is “this” but almost simultaneously actually something else before somehow finally back to “that”. I am sure he is a nice guy and a genuinely good family man but his over thinking on-the-fly presentations are not that great. Did he ever just report the weather like others? Glad he wants to call it a career and maybe enjoy some brews with his bud Tolbert who is just as not to the point and consistent many times.

  13. Are all these newsroom really as dysfunctional as you describe them? Seems like everyone is carrying a sharp knife, ready to stab a co-worker in the back.
I have been in tense work scenes, which caused me lots of stress and anxiety. But I learned to bark back and stand up for myself. Once I asserted myself, the subtle jabs immediately stopped.

  14. Yeah, this whole diversity bullshit is so successful that they have to enforce it by fear. Worked for the Nazis, Stalin and other fascists, right?

  15. Jules is a star and doesn't need to team with anyone. Reed should team up with Liz. Ryan is not anchor material. Mark Tamayo is a little bland, but capable. He should replace Billy if he retires.

  16. Julian Glover does a good job in reading the news, but for me, I just keep getting distracted by his Bart Simpson hair, or whatever that is on top of his head! And his title of "race reporter", is pathetic to me. I mean, do we REALLY need a "race" reporter? He is probably the only person at KGO that Ming would not dare to say anything remotely nasty to either, because he is one who "checks all the boxes". I don't know, but I just wouldn't want to be at a job just because I check all the boxes, instead of getting there because of my qualifications for the job.

  17. In every station I've worked for there is that group of negative folks who constantly complain. They opine for the "old days" forgetting that those days were far from perfect. They were just different. This business grows and changes as does our society. Either you embrace change, bitch about them covertly in the break room or parking lot or...move on! Is it wrong that a talented, Emmy winning young man of color rises to a position of responsibility? Is it wrong that a gay anchor does not have to hide who he/she is to conform? Is it wrong that a woman would prefer to be judged by her abilities rather than her breast size and fashion choices? The only way we can right these wrongs is to speak out. And if that is being "woke" my friends, hear me ROAR!

  18. I support Julian all the way Vs Jerk Reggie who should leave the station or one day welcome to 4/5/6/11 News when Dan retires

  19. More Reed Cowan and less Ryan Yamamoto, sorry, not to be harsh.

  20. Julian Glover seems to be to KGO today what Geraldo Rivera when he was at WABC-TV in the 1970s -- the young hip with-it cool guy who knew what was going on and could "tell it like it is" and give us the straight s*** about what's happening now. Not to compare the personalities and style, but maybe kind of the same idea. Not that Julian is saving the world or anything, hardly, he's a local-TV personality (and not that I'm much of a Geraldo fan either).
