A Most Embarrassing Saturday Night Sportscast on KTVU; Bailey O'Carroll Not Ready For Prime Time; Heenan/Liviakis Rock KRON; Waldman Favorite To Replace Moore; Dan Ashley/Ama Daetz Feuding (Again); Radnich Love in West Portal; Frank Somerville Tosses Cell in Lake Merritt; Sunday Rush

SUNDAY RUSH ...

PATHETIC SPORTS on KTVU--Bailey O'Carroll ready for prime time?

Nooo.

Saturday night's 6 PM sports report on KTVU was the most comical, (unintentionally), embarrassing few minutes I've ever watched.

And I've seen everything.

Bailey O'Carroll BLEW every word-also mispronounced names too. It was painful to observe.

I guess KTVU figured no one was watching so might as well put on crap. You get what you pay for.

O'Carroll seemed lost. Her sportscast amounted to a comedy act although all five of us weren't laughing.

*IN a non-PC world, it would be great for KRON to have both Catherine Heenan and Vicki Liviakis on the news desk --every weeknight at 6 --one, to replace retiring Pam Moore.

But that's impossible. Not in 2023.

Justine Waldman is the leader in the clubhouse, one being she's been at KRON since 2009 and happens to be the wife of Grant Lodes.

Heenan and Liviakis are longer-tenured but are considered "too old."
I know, ridiculous. Calling out the asshole consultants.

*DON'T buy the FAKE laughs and bantering: ABC7's Dan Ashley is suddenly no buddy of Ama Daetz. It's all personal.

She's pissed over his continued coddling pf DETESTED Kristen Sze, a woman who has all the sensitivity of a Millbrae Arbys.

Dan, by the way? Your latest hairdoo is, OMG, just plain weird and OUT of PLACE! Bring nack the hairplugs.

Ama is like everyone else at Circle7: she can't stand house snitch, Sze. They're not building a better newsroom.

A senior staffer at KGO told me, "Ming Sze makes Trixie (ND/VP--News) Watkowski look like Mother Teresa."

OUCH!

Gary Radnich was spotted at the West Portal chic restaurant with a woman, not his wife and no, they were not talkinjg about his lasagne recipes.

*Greg Papa doesn't mention his wife much on his KNBR show because he's too busy dating other women --a yellow flag on Papa but it gets even worse when he YELLS, "Touchdoownnnnnnnnnnnnnnn, San Francisco!"

*FRANK SOMERVILLE threw his cell phone into Lake Merritt--he really did.

Somerville officially wants no part of anyone, including his family other than his adopted daughter. It's a rough life for Frank ahead.

    3. Maybe Frank should have jumped into Lake Merritt and left his cellphone on the shoreline?! All this bad drama and cheap theater isn’t helping him to make a case of “coming to grips” with his afflictions. Someone needs to kick Frank in the sack to wake him up from his sad dream. Get a clue Frank, we are all rooting for you, but ye God man, straighten up and fly right. Volunteer at Glide for awhile, it will give you some perspective on your simple twists of fate. Helping others will help you Frank. And cut the thespian act - even seasoned pros go begging for jobs.

    1. They are lucky enough to have established anchors like Catherine and Vicky. If Josh Palefsky makes the mistake of putting a young un-great anchor in he will pay the price dearly when the ratings sink. Justine makes so many mistakes on a daily basis, no one is rooting for that. Sorry but it's true. And the others that are under 35 will alienate the audience they have at night. They're gaining on KTVU. To lose Pam is huge. To replace her with anything less than a solid, time tested anchor will be the end of the KRON 10pm race that they're gaining ground on.

    1. How did O’Bozo even land an on-air position? I know we’re talking about the KTVU (the laughingstock of news), but still. Have they just completely given up and no longer have standards?

    2. “Have they just completely given up and no longer have standards?”

If you’ve actually had the misfortune of watching KTVU then you’d already know the answer to that question is a resounding and unequivocal, “yes.”

    3. Dollars and cents. That’s what the Bailee’s of the world come down to. An insult to women in this business who have worked hard to build connections and hone their skills to become true journalists. That is, if there are any of us out there anymore.

    4. @5:27 looks like it. OMG dyin O’Bozo. Lol

    5. 7:24 check KRON for your answer. They already have the graves dug for experienced, i.e. “old” female journos, and based on that hire at KTVU, looks like they do too.

      Delete
    6. Jealousey. Enough said.

      Delete
    7. 5:27 you’re wondering how Bailee got hired? Well, for starters she’s an educated woman with invaluable behind-the-scenes experience in production and digital content development. Even at her “young” age, she’s arguably the most likable and positive personality in the newsroom. She welcomes constructive feedback and has made it clear to those she works with that she wants to leverage their expertise and experience as she learns and develops her craft.
Why do such qualities trigger you?

    8. Amber seems to think this is a joke. But those of us who have worked here over the last decade are not amused. Get your shit together. Stop making a mockery of the legacy we helped build or keep making enemies out of your own team.

    9. Bailey getting an on air job is what happens when your station’s reputation is shot, your budget is blown/tied up on exorbitant salaries going to has-beens and old farts, and you need to hire a reporter but no longer have the ability to attract anyone even remotely qualified.

      Simple as that.

  5. Q: Why did Frank toss his phone in the lake?
A: So he could continue to drink like a fish!
    (ok one more)
A fish walk into a bar...
The barkeep ask "what can I get you?" to the fish...
    The fish say's "Water".

Bew sure to tip your weather girl.

      His phone beeped ........

      Then he throws the phone.

  6. Related to sports but not the station. Charlie Walter’s last day at KPIX was this past Friday. It sounds like he was under a contract and management told him the station was going in a different direction. Perhaps he got fired?

    1. They don’t let fired people say goodbye on air. I’d guess he winds up in New York

    2. 3:26 CBS management going in a different direction which is sad. Charlie was solid

    3. I was wondering about this too.

    4. @10:45PM - Charlie was pretty good indeed. I will really miss him. For now, we have Andrea and Vern. Wonder if we'll get another sports anchor or they will stick in-house and go with Gianna Franco (who does once in a while and when she does, she does a great job) or even Ryan Yamamoto, who used to do sports for a previous station.

Don't forget, he was initially a fill-in and replacement for Dennis O'Donnell back in the pandemic days.

@4:09PM - I guess that's true, BUT on the 11PM news on Friday with Juliette Goodrich, filling in for Sara Donchey, Jules brought it up that it was his last day, he did not go into too much detail compared to the other retired anchors (i.e. Allen Martin, Ken Bastida) or meteorologists leaving for another gig (i.e. Paul Deanno or Mary Lee, who is still "technically" with KPIX). Isolating from the KPIX side, Bill O'Reilly from FOX from example and Don Lemon wasn't able to say goodbye. Maybe Lou Dobbs did but it was brief.

    5. I think it’s pretty clear what happened based off his twitter post. He wanted a full time contract, the station finally posted the job, and decided to bring in someone else. Instead of staying on freelance, he said peace. Based on the way anchors reacted on his Twitter it all seems like they were pretty shocked and that management made a very bad decision.

      Delete
    6. That likely explains it. I didn't know he was actually a freelance. You see him on some days and not others.

Even Paul Heggen found out and replied on his posts saying someone should hire him. Remember, he moved to the Bay Area because of his wife, Kylie Mills who is a sports anchor for KRON 4. I hope he will join another Bay Area station (hopefully not KTVU, but who knows).

    5. 8:39, exactly! KTVU follows the “any warm body” approach to scheduling. If you’ve got a pulse, you’ve got a job. I’m surprised they haven’t thrown a janitor on anchor desk.

Though if they want to expand their scheduling pool, then they should look no further than their own parking lot and the various side streets and back alleys around the station, which is where most employees can be found whining and sniveling and gossiping about work (while on the clock).

  19. Sometimes I feel as though I’m reading a Ray Bradberry futuristic, nightmare science fiction novel.. The people who inhabit radio and TV news and sports in the bay area are by and large, mediocre at best and laughably amateurish at worst. Yes there are a some exceptions as Rich pointed out, but they are far snd few between. Radio and TV news and sports are now sharing the spotlight with social media, which is a ghastly combustion of annoying noise. Nonsense and misinformation. The “young demographic” barely exist for the electronica media and isre completely dead for the print media. Almost everyone under the age of 35 is constantly staring at their tiny screens, completely disengaged with anything but the virtual world. Many are pecking away furiously w their thumbs, reacting to the latest gossip or texting four or five words to people or checking the most ridiculous platform of all: Twitter. And even more of these mindless clods are walking across the street without even looking. for cars, bike riders or buses. It’s a wonder more don’t get run down by distracted drivers who are also too busy texting or talk Ng w people on their phones as well to pay any attention. .meanwhile, these soullesd , mega media companies who are working on the cheap keep bringing in newbies, and fresh faced college kids who are getting the kind of pay a media member would have gotten in Fresno 30 years ago. . It’s really pathetic. So much for Bay area radio and TV serving the public!
