WHEN Julie Haener leaves
KTVU, (and day/week now), the new iteration of
The 10 O'Clock News will commence:
Alex Savidge and
Heather Holmes will assume duties. If KTVU brass could execute a
do-over, they'd tell
Mike Mibach to go pound salt and debut Savidge and Holmes right away (for
Feb Sweeps), but they don't want drama and Mibach has a contract--he's also
DUDSville with viewers.
It's not just that women can't stand Mibach, it's staff at KTVU that think he's a total asshole; that he got the 10 PM gig not based on talent but solely on him thinking he "deserved" it. And KTVU bought that and gave him the gig. Now they're stuck with him.
My gut tells me (and you all) that Mibach will do 5 and 6 and his 10 will be a goner. He simply is a bust, the ratings say so.
*Haener can tell her buds that she wanted out of the anchor duties of the Chinese New Year's parade but she VERY MUCH was TICKED OFF that KTVU kicked her off the show. EGO trumps sheer knowledge. Haener's own aloof status at KTVU prompted the decision to omit her for the parade coverage.
*KPIX (CBS News/Bay Area) internal numbers say the new look, (especially at 11 PM) have positive numbers. Sweeps next week will confirm the real deal. And my peeps at PIX say there's still loads of issues at 855 Battery that don't translate into good ratings. PIX either needs to stay with the new brand and hope it builds an audience or go back to square one. CBS has invested quite a bit of dough into the new look/format so expect the same look no matter what.
*Under discussion: the suits at PIX know viewers don't care for
Ryan Yamamoto but have stuck with him because he too has a contract. So the idea of pairing him with
Juliette Goodrich is on the table. 5 PM with
Liz Cook is a ratings
DISASTER. But Goodrich at 6 and 7, with
Yama, could be on the drawing board. Either way,
Ryan ain't moving the needle as
I've said for months now.
*Maybe, Raj (Mathai), if you and Janelle, (Wang) wanted to quell rumors about your buddyship you'd stop the relentness selfies and coffee dates at San Jose Starbucks but you don't so I'll just leave it at that.

NBC Bay Area VP of News,
Steph Androuny, were to split to
ABC7, (where she previously worked), that wouldn't surprise me. For one, her boyfriend still works at
Circle7 and sooner or later,
Countess Trixie will be out of the building for good.
*AT
Tadich Grill on Wednesday night:
Amy Robach and lovey-dovey, bud, TJ Holmes. Maybe they had the sand dabs for dinner but fresh crab sounded good too.
*If Jobina Fortson is swayed by lucrative offers from MSNBC and departs KGO, then you read it here first. If not, then go get some vodka sods at the Old Ship and sing a few songs.
*Bay Area media gadfly,
George Devine, Jr., will make his debut on
NBC Sports California on Saturday --2 PM. Devine will call the
USF women Dons against power team, Gonzaga. Devine is an up and comer broadcaster and has the chops. Just take a look.
*Former
KRONvict Robin Winston is kicking ass down in LA at NBC and is the talk of SoCal TV--good for her and shows you there is LIFE after KRON.
*IF YOU DON'T LIKE CROWDS like me, then stay out of SF Saturday night: Chinese New Years Parade, Warriors game, Giants' Fan Fest and the usual dinner crowd --500K people downtown and good luck parking.
If I was in charge of any TV station, the news contracts would all have a clause that if their ratings drop below a certain point, they're toast.
ReplyDeleteAnd management needs to take a take a 50% pay cut for the duration of the talent's initial contract for failing to effectively utilize the talent the company paid for.
DeleteSavidge and Holmes should have been done when Frank shit the bed. Do it now! Nobody gives a damn about hurt feelings and drama? Bring an end to dysfunction junction and start fresh. Clean house. Goodrich will have to carry the load being saddled with the effeminate Yamamoto. She deserves better, or at least someone with a smattering of testosterone flowing in their body.

DeleteHi Rich. You’ve probably already heard this but Julie Haener took a last minute vacation day yesterday (Thursday, 2/2) and is taking a hastily arranged trip, returning on Monday.
ReplyDeleteShe's livid she was left off the parade broadcast entirely so she’s now trying to make it look like she requested a break from this year’s parade in order to take a weekend getaway, despite the fact she arranged it all very last minute.

ReplyDeleteKtvu sucks ass. All they do is shuffle around the same washed up has-beens from show to show. The same people who’ve been there for an eternity as the ratings have been in a perpetual state of freefall. They don’t even attempt to make meaningful change by bringing in even remotely qualitied people who could be viewed as a difference maker or needle mover. Their idea of shaking things up is telling Frank Mallicoat and Jesse Gary to do sports, and Roberta Gonzalez to fill-in anchor.
ReplyDeleteWe can critique each of the other local stations but at least they try to change things up by bringing in people from the outside who they believed would/will improve the quality of their newscasts. Whether or not that’s the case can be debated until the cows come home but at least they try, unlike ktvu who is perfectly fine being bottom dwellers.

ABC 7 really has an embarrassment of riches in the AM with Jobina and Kumasi. They're both engaging on air and really good at what they do. But Kumasi scores heavy load anchoring while Jobina picks up the scraps with newsroom stories and traffic reports. They seem to be good friends both on and off camera in spite of all that. Hard to do in this cutthroat world of broadcast journalism. Just ask the folks over at KTVU.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good team, though. Fun morning banter in between all the serious news stories. Nice way to start the morning with a smile. You'd hate to break it up. But I wouldn't be surprised if Jobina moved on to greener pastures with a more substantive role at another network like MSNBC. Everything's so transient these days. That's why it's hard for a lot of these shows to build an audience much less 'a better Bay Area'.

ReplyDeleteYou're right. Mibach looks constipated the majority of the time. His gastrointestinal issues are likely why he doesn’t smile. Evidently he was told to try smiling once in a while, so now he does the weird thing where he tries to smile while he’s talking (like in between sentences and pauses), and then smiles at the end of his read, no matter what the story is about.

ReplyDeleteWhen you lose the Chinese male commenter from your CNY parade coverage, replacing him with a Chinese woman on your staff makes sense. Then, to maintain the previous balance, you replace the white woman with a white guy. Finally, there must be a modicum of chemistry between the two, so the viewers can relax and enjoy it.

ReplyDeleteDo they do their jobs, as scheduled? Do they have a good rapport with their co-workers? Do they make money for their employer? Do they help the community? Do they help foster the next generation?
These jobs are not Rocket Surgery - they require attention, and ease in front of a camera. These folks are working schmucks just like the rest of us - being uptight over their work style/ethic is pathetic, nothing they do is all that important.
Do you see what Donchey is wearing? It looks like a military colored camouflaged dress. I'm all for everyone who has served their country (LT Burch and everyone who has, who we are extremely thankful for), but even Burch won't wear this kind of clothing on the newscast. Why Sara?
