Storm Coverage OK But Hardly Comprehensive

YES, we finally have weather to report and by and large, we're getting it.

TV news is all over it but it's the usual visual stuff --from Marin flooding,(inevitable) to live shots of the Russian River and obligatory hardware store in Mill Valley "how ya coping?" actualities. It's mostly passable and legit but it's hardly comprehensive.

And it ignores vast parts of the Bay Area that also saw immense damage leftover from the first storm that hit New Years Eve --a major portion of 580 in San Leandro was shut down in both directions yet we hradly saw nor heard about it. The Eastshore freeway in Berkeley saw significant flooding on both the Ashby and University ave. exits but there was little to no coverage.

A huge tree fell onto the Macarthur Freeway Westbound near Highway 13 in Oakland, but other than radio reports and a small mention in a few newspapers, local TV news ignored it.

Which brings us to the point, there's other parts of the Bay Area besides Marin that are impacted by the storms. By watching the coverage, (or lack thereof) you wouldn't know it.

  1. Radio stations won't cover it other than traffic updates, as they have little to no field reporters. AM 1000 in Seattle still does a better job of breaking news and on air updates for an audience half the size of the Bay area. The Facebook " scanner news" groups fill in what used to be breaking news, sometimes hours ahead of the media.
    Shame

    1. I heard KCBS covering it Plenty today. Was rather shocked how well they covered it, considering it was technically the New Years holiday. They actually sounded professional this afternoon.

    1. We would need two more such storms for this to be an average year. Shasta Reservoir is at only 34% capacity, up from 33%.

  8. Darren Peck just said tonight that Heggen would be on the 6-7am newscast on Sunday. Yet Burch is still in Europe. It’s great Darren is covering the weekend in addition to his fill in duties on the weekdays. He enjoys his job & deserves a raise no doubt but he’s likely burnt out.

Again they need at least 1 more meteorologist like they do on KRON, KNTV and KTVU. This is coming especially if Hackney can’t properly give comprehensive meteorology coverage of the storm nor comes that early at 6AM anyway. They could have brought Mary Lee instead of bugging the Chief Meteorologist to come on Sunday morning unless he’s working with Peck within the same newscast (like the atmospheric river of 2021 & the lightning siege of 2020). I also wish Mary Lee would fill in some evenings if Paul Heggen is not there especially since she is anyway reporting live in the evenings on some days anyways. She is knowledgable, certified and combines Darren, Paul & Brian’s info and concisely gets to the point of her forecasts and has no ego & very nice & pleasant about it maintaining a great personality towards everyone.

I don’t know what happened with that kpix meteorologist listing anyway…its closed but did it get thrown out the window? Is anyone joining?
